I'm sorry, but if I use my Packet8 (or Vonage if I had that) phone to call another Packet8 (or Vonage) customer we don't ever touch the phone system.
If EVERYONE had a broadband connection tommorrow, EVERYONE would have a Vonage/Packet8 phone and all calls would be VoiP to VoiP and free worldwide.
The LEGACY Interface Vonage/Packet8 provides is the reason I can cancel my overpriced deprecated phone service and only use my $19.95/month unlimited long distance to US/Canada VoiP.
I have broadband for my $19.95/month VOIP telephone
I also host web sites on my server, and email.
Oh, and I love gaming online, tell me dial up is even a workable option for that. HA!
Large file transfer. You may burn a CDR and sneakernet things but I'd rather stay home and scp them.
I have a digital camera, and I take thousands of pictures with it. I like to show them to my friends and family.. So I host them on my server.
Now, in all fairness my 384k/384k wifi link is hardly the broadband of my dreams, but it's adequate. Sometimes they relax the bandwidth caps and I get 3MBPS/3MBPS which is truly nice.
Why broadband? Cuz waiting sux.
Is 70mm film what we see movies at the theater in?? Give me DVD quality ANY DAY over that crap.
Theater quality is crap, I understand it's film and higher resolution, but you're blowing it up to a 50'+ screen, of course it's gonna look bad. Give me smaller screen with higher quality. Aside from the resolution, what's with the jitters and jumps? Have you ever noticed that everything on the screen is jumping all over the place 3"-1'? It's no wonder they make the credits more edgy these days, or people would notice the crap quality at the theater.
Now, for "new" formats...poorly encoded DivX can look considerably worse than an original DVD, but if you get a good dual pass encoder (like DVDRip on Linux, which uses Transcode) then it's amazing the quality you can get. I rip all my DVD's to DivX to watch on my PS2 using BroadQ. On my 62" HDTV you'd be hard pressed to tell the DVD from the Divx.
It's the same with HDTV, am I the only one who thinks HDTV is 90% hype 10% better picture? My parents have a 60" Mitsubishi HDTV with a reciever built in. (I have a 62" Toshiba without an HDTV reciever.) The HDTV does look better, but it's not 50% better. Maybe 10%, and I don't find it enhances my viewing experience at all.
I use bbs wireless connection for my Internet. 384k/384k is ok, sometimes they bump me up to 2MBPS/2MBPS but I suspect it's an accident..
I use packet 8 for my VoiP & PSTN telephone calls (all telephone use). IT's $19.95/month, no contract, and unlimited long distance to US/Canada/Alaska/Hawaii. And International rates are about 50% of the cheapest competitors.
There are issues with VoiP, it's not a 100% system, but neither was our local phone, and for a savings for me of about $60/month I'll take it.
gtg, phone's ringing
at least to some degree. If you COULDN'T pirate photoshop or M$ office how many people would using it?
I know of several companies that are pirating M$ Office and when faced with the licensing costs of hundreds of thousands they'll consider alternatives like Open Office or Word Perfect. But if nobody cares they'll continue to pirate software, keeping M$ Office owning the mindshare for office apps.
If users at companies were forced to use Open Office it'd be just like when they were forced to use M$ Office. They'd adapt, learn to deal with it, and soon those hourly Office crashes would be the norm instead of a drawback..
Of course historically the other 95% has followed what we 5% (or 1%) have done on the desktop, and it certianly is believable they will continue to do so...
I'm an IT Manager for a small company. We have about 5-10 Mac's here. We're 99.5% Linux on the server, and about 35% Linux on the desktop. I have a G4.
Mac OS X and 9 are not easier to use than Linux/Windows. I think many people erroneously think Macintosh is "easier to use" since they just give up on doing much with it. For me, "easier to use" means I can decide a task on my own, let's call it a "goal", and easily achieve this "goal" with my computer. This is why I prefer Linux or FreeBSD. I can achieve any goal I want. If someone else hasn't achieved it already I can achieve it for everyone. I've used OS 9 and OS X and I can state that achieving my goals was in many instances not even possible.
Even with modest goals I couldn't achieve them. For example, I dont like the default "skin" and I want to change it.. I have NEVER seen someone do this, I've even posted this statement half a dozen times on/. and NOBODY has shown me a screen shot of their customized OS X. A good friend of mine went from Linux to OS X and I consider him very technical, he doesn't know how to do this. Can it be done? No, I don't think so. You can do it, great, reply with a howto, or email me kgb@submarinefund.com
I'll try it out post haste on my G4.
There are a couple dozen tasks like this that I've tried that I ended up with the answer "can't be done?"
Ignoring the horrible hardware monopoly and the extremely overpriced and underpowered machines Apple sells, I can't recommend OS X to anyone since I have a VERY LOW expectation that they will be able to achieve their goals with it.
Of course the UI customization is one area that just irks me about Apple zealots. It's such a slick GUI. That's greeaattt... I hope you like it since you're stuck with it...
I do think this is why a lot of people choose Linux over Win/Mac OS for control of customizations, with Mac or Win you're helpless, or dependent on shelling out $$$ for often buggy "skin" software...
It wasn't the only thing that couldn't be done with the Mac I have, but it's the one that bugs me the most and that I remember, since I moved on, back to my Linux box that does whatever I tell it, like a good penguin should..
my home is about 2 years old, the windows are the energy saver type. It is possible air conditioning is not my major use of power, 3 TV's, 3 kids, and about 10 computers, 3 of which run 24x7...
I like solar power, but upfront costs are considerable. Wind power seems more attractive to me, but living in the suburbs I've been told I can't throw up a 100' high windmill...
well the idiots in Germany apparently don't know how to mark their chips
correctly
look at the close up... you may notice the MADE IN MALASIA markings...
Now, maybe that's just the engineering sample, but a tech at Linux Networx told me today that they just got a large shipment of 2GHZ Opterons direct from Singapore...
I saw quite a few of their new clusters ready to ship out. I had to constantly wipe the drool off my face while I watched them assemble 2GHZ dual Opteron boxes with 2GB RAM per processor. Their tech is impressive. They have their Ice Box control units and quite a bit of custom control/monitoring hardware that makes building your own cluster seem less advantageous.
They boast #3 on the worlds fastest super computers, so questions about Linux on the "Enterprise" should be easily resolved.
This Tom's hardware review of Opteron vs. Xeon is quite interesting to give a better feel for comparison to todays speeds.
It will be nice when we have some numbers to compare Itanium II direct 64 bit to Opteron, although it doesn't seem much can save the Itanic IMHO.
If they're smart they will say exactly that... Conserving power is ludicrous. There is an unlimited supply of power in the Universe. Why should we even *consider* conserving it?
We need MORE POWER NOW! I want cheaper, more reliable power. I want a nuclear plant next to my house, better yet, in my basement, for my own personal power usage.
Conserving water, makes sense, we only have so much h2O, although it'd be better to invest in purifying our current supply and recycling water.
So, again, WHY?
WHY SHOULD WE CONSERVE POWER?????
WHY WHY WHY????
my power bill is $180-200. I keep my house at 72-75F, even when it's 105F outside. IF the power company gets 35% more expensive here then it will be cost effective to generate my own using propane and a generator.

I get instant access to my credit report, monitoring for identity theft, and unsubscribing for junk mail (no, not junk email). They also send me weekly emails notifying me of any changes in my credit, no specifics in the email.
I've been using it for over a year, originally I signed up to see my credit, and it was about $20/year. Now it's $50/year, but I'm a satisfied customer.
70mph is too slow for my commute.
I average 75-85, and I'm not the only one driving that fast, everyone here in utah pretty much averages that.
I think top speed should be 90-100. I'd prefer a nice cruising speed to any rapid acceleration. But it does need to be able to maintain 75mph uphill (canyons) and the range needs to be at least 150 miles.
I need NUMA support for the IBM X440's we run
You bring up an interesting point. If NUMA support is what SCO's claiming was stolen from their sources, then does having a copy of the source in your kernel but not using it make you guilty?
Well, once Wal-Mart puts RFIDs on all my clothes, they could just setup a few thousand pinging points around every city and they'd know where I'm at!
Does target sell clothes?
LEEP THE GOVERNMENT AND ITS OPPRESSIVE LAWS OFF THE INTERNET!
Spam doesn't bother me, I never see it unless I want to. I use popfile
If you dont use popfile or some other 99%+ spam filter then you are missing the boat
I dont want any more laws. We've already got enough bad ones, and they aren't helping me out.
Why techno-savvy Internet dwellers would WANT the Federal government OR the state governments making laws to govern ANY conduct on the Internet is beyond me!
Please people, take responsibility for your actions, don't buy the crap they're pusing, EVER!
That's the *only* thing that will ever stop SPAM.
Wake up, America, we're loosing all our Freedoms. Politicians don't need any encouragement.
Stop whining about spam.. Harvest my email it's kgb@submarinefund.com want it in a link HERE
I ain't afraid a you and yer spam!
It's a base64 encoded file. Email often uses base64 to encode binary files for transfer. It's probably due to the message being sent as an email. Your mail reader should have a way to save it, try cutting & paste into a txt message you send yourself?
You've got it all wrong... First of all Nvidia did NOT buy 3dfx. 3dfx went under, filed bankruptcy, and Nvidia bought some of their "Assets". Here's a link. Anyone who was awake at the time had to note the serious lack of 3dfx innovation, which could be summed up by 'throw some more chips on that board'.
Now that's just where you're wrong historically, here's why/. hates Nvidia, or seems to. First of all Nvidia develops drivers for their cards and doesn't release the source code for it, keeping most die hard Linux junkies away from that which they want the most, information! Second, they do a fine job of having fast drivers, and easy to use products, which makes most/.'ers and Linux users content with their closed drivers.
ATI, on the otherhand, "works with open source developers", by providing them information about their products, allowing them to write their own drivers. This keeps ATI from expending much money to support Linux, and it severely limits your choices as a Linux only gaming consumer.. to Nvidia...
I'd wager that in a/. poll most people would say that Nvidia is the card in their Linux computer...
Also, ATI was the giant long before Nvidia rose to power. Go look at your old OEM video cards, the name on them isn't Nvidia.
Since it's redundant, I won't make a seperate post for this, but I had my own bad driver experience with ATI's TV Wonder VE. I bought this card and put it in an XP computer since I was worried about the Linux drivers and wanted to be sure it worked before setting it up under Linux. The driver install went smoothly, but afterwards the computer would only boot to a BSOD. I threw it in a Mandrake box and it worked like a charm. Amazing to me that someone can reverse engineer a product and write a driver for it better than the company that made it, and had full access to the information....
I'm voting with my wallet from now on. ALL games, hardware, and computer accessories that I purchase from now on MUST have Linux support.
It seems companies new to producing products on Linux make claims about supported versions to mimize the bredth of their new support offerings. IBM said we had to have Red Hat Advanced server to run DB2 EEE. I've run it successfully on RedHat 7.2,8.0,9.0 and Mandrake 9.0, Peanut Linux, and let's not forget my personal favorite, and our soon to be production server, Gentoo 1.4rc2. (I'm sure someone will whine to themselves about running anything but properly labeled "production quality" server OS, but please.. this is Linux, and I'm the one who gets paged at 3am when Red Hat Advanced server pooches it.)
If they ship Linux binaries and need linux libs then it'll work on Linux. You may need to hack the install, or install rpm, but if you can't do it, hire someone who can!
