  1. Re:De Icaza Responds on London Stock Exchange Rejects .NET For Open Source · · Score: 0

(well, ok, .NET would have created a system that would run your line-of-business apps without problem, but when it comes to very high performance, low latency systems, its simply not suitable, a bit like Java is not suitable for nuclear reactors).

Funny how people make claims without stating facts. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange uses JAVA as the runtime for their trading engines and I don't hear anyone complaining about speed. Round trip times are less than 3ms if you are in the Chicago Metro Area.

We have run .NET for our main trading platform for over three years. We haven't had a problem with it yet. It all depends upon how good the architects and developers are.

I'm willing to bet it wasn't Microsoft who wrote the heart of TradeElect but Accenture. Through experience with that company, it is the turd that can't be polished. Besides, what was the LSE thinking when they brought in a third party to develop their trading system? It should have been developed in house.

If you need email, use telnet. Seriously, I think having a minimal OS is good. If the user wants email, they can do a search on google and come up with a laundry list of email apps. But in the end, it is their choice and not Microsoft's. I think a lot of people commenting are missing that point.

It's a cycle that just keeps going and going until all our white-collar jobs will be outsourced and there will be no middle class left. We can thank our government for that.

I can go on and on about this but I have neither the time nor the inclination.

  7. Re:Once again, why? on Plans For .xxx Domain For p0rn Scrapped · · Score: 0

Here in the U.S. we have age limits and certain guidelines to follow when buying/selling pornography. Typically, movies/videos are located on the lower shelf behind the counter or in a separate room where access is monitored or a pornography store. As far as I know, you have to be 18 years of age or more to buy it as well. I don't see anything wrong with selling pornography this way and I agree with it. As a parent, I don't want pornography readily available to my children. Whether you want to believe it or not, pornography is a lot easier to obtain off the internet than anywhere else.

Take for example the website http://www.nick.com/ (Nickelodeon). Say your child is typing in the web address and accidentally types in http://www.dick.com/ because of a typo. They have just went to a website that is not suitable for a child. Having the website http://www.dick.xxx/ is more suitable under this scenario. I can filter the website/domain as not suitable at the fwl/rtr level.

I've never been to Europe and observed the practice of selling porn there, but I don't see how this would kill the porn industry if all pornographic content was placed in its own domain. We do the same thing here in the states through normal retail outlets and I don't hear the porn industry complaining about that.

Am I judging pornography? Yes I am. I like it just like the next guy, but I don't think it is suitable for my 5 year old and 7 year old. I think there definately has to be a change made and right now having .xxx is the only solution I see so far.
