I have worked in the videogame industry for over 4 years now, and I am the owner of a 100% independent Playstation 2 website GamezCore.com
I can honestly say that any REAL, professional, videogame reviewer, not the I-wanna-review-games-cuz-I-get-em-free reviewers are about as non-biased as they come. As the poster of this article found in only *TWO* reviews, reader's will quickly smell bullshit reviews and your credibility is lost forever. For a professional in the industry, this would spell the end of a career.
In the end, however, reviews do come down to personal opinion... they are not scientific. I may find great joy in subtle nuances of a particular title, where another may not even notice. It is the same as an untrained eye viewing a work of art and an art historian... they will see two wildly different things. This is not bias, it comes from a deeper understanding of the material at hand. I tend to step back and review a game from a more general sense, rather than from my trained eye.
Where I think the videogame reviewing industry needs to change is in the scoring. On a scale of 1-10 almost 90% of games will fall in the 7-10 area. This span of three points is hardly a good way to evaluate 90% of the games out there, but it is where almost all game reviews fall. However, if I would give a game a 5 (which would be average) no one would ever even think of buying it... but 5 would be where many games would sit on a truly even scale.
Not too many professionals are going to risk credibility over a $40.00 game, and we at GamezCore have lost publishers over bad reviews, no big deal... we'll purchase the games if we have to and still review them as honestly as if we had received them directly. Bias is more to be found in the print media world, where hidden ties and money trails tend to cross more often than realized.
You know, this post really managed to get me about as mad as any post I have ever seen at/.
I am a student at Penn State University, in the IST program, and I have spent untold amounts of time and my hard earned money to "learn" from instructors who have no idea of what they are even teaching! Maybe if this person doesn't keep up with technology... HE SHOULDN'T BE TEACHING THE DAMN CLASS! Talk about ethics, this post is amazingly frustrating to me.
Doesn't anyone else see the problem here?Students should be learning about this topic from a professor who is schooled in technology and has a good understanding of ethics! Students are now going to be wasting their time in a class where the professor doesn't even know what the prevalent issues are to cover!
College tuitions have skyrocketed, and will continue to do so... however we, as students, continue to receive a rapidly diminishing quality of instruction. My only wish is that no one would help this moron.
Big Man on Campus with Bob Maloogaloogaloogaloogalooga takes my vote for one of the most underappreciated comedies of all time.
High Fidelity is in a tie with BMoC in my eyes, High Fidelity manages to mix a solid storyline, excellent music, and phenominal acting into one great movie.
Pi is one that doesn't get much limelight, and is required watching for any geek.
I have raised this point in the past, but it once again applies:
With storage space being so inexpensive and abundant, all programs should be fully independent, self-contained entities. The idea of linking programs against a set of standard set of DLL's is a great way to make smaller programs, but if you haven't noticed small and efficient is not the most important aspect of any program these days.
DLL's and Linux's library dependencies can be completely solved in this way, and management would become much simpler.
And, for those who believe that this would mean huge programs... take a look at the Phoenix web browser, it installs completely in it's own folder and is still very small and efficient.
There is a commercial right now put out by GE explaining this new technology, and at first I was pretty excited by it.
But then practicality took over, as it always does, and I began to think about what would happen from even just a slow speed crash. This thing seems to be mainly a one piece mold, and I don't look forward to the costs associated with repair.
I'm glad that future generations of young people won't have to go through the great pains I have just trying to earn a computer related degree.
The massive amounts of inept technology professors in the universities is simply amazing. Out of 4 computer classes this semester, ZERO that's 0 of my instructors actually hold a computer related degree. It is a sad state of affairs.
At least these students can come away with something of real value without waisting the time and money that "great" universities like Penn State require.
Well, the site is only three months old, and we have a large amount of content already. As for "commercial arrangements" we do promote special OFFERS, but these HELP our readers to get cool extras when they buy games/movies that they would have bought anyhow.
If you read, we had a link to where you got all kinds of FREE stuff when you pre-ordered RahXephon... boy we sure are evil bastards. And for the mod chips... they are our new sponsor, and we are kicking off a new section dedicated to the "modding" scene. It is called a tie-in.
You don't have to like the site... it is a site built in the image of Slashdot, but focused on gaming. That's all.
I never stated "All Games" anywhere in my statement. Our site has only been live for three months and is serving over 2,000 gamers a day.
And I threw the $ in MS ONE TIME, and it was just a small jab at billy and his company.
As the owner of a video game site and as a reviewer, I can say that many of these so-called "reviewers" are more enamored with continuing to get free games to review or worse yet, to continue to sell ad space, than in bashing a horrible game.
GamezCore.com was founded on 100% independence... and many times we pay for that independence, literally. Often we have to purchase games, due to bad reviews of certain companies. When a bad game comes past my desk, I make it known... and all of our reviewers are just as free to make a true judgement of a title - good or bad.
It comes down to $$$, and if you want 'em you have to play by the rules. There are still some of us who value truth over the greed though. Just not too many.
GamezCore.com has all the user interactivity of Slashdot, with a true community feel. It is built around 100% independence from corporate bias, and brings late-breaking news to thousands of hardcore gamers daily.

I know that the large frothing masses LIKE to worry about libraries and dependancy, but there are also a lot of us who like ease of use. With bandwidth and high capacity media so cheap these days, I believe most if not all programs should be self contained non-dependant entities.
Just like Office for Mac's, one folder drag it over and run. Or even better, the Phoenix browser... fully self contained AND small. I think this is the future of software, and Linux should really jump on this if it wants to be a player in the desktop market.
(not trolling, just looking for some discussion)
I don't care about International Space Stations... I just want more monkeys. Or maybe midget astronauts, oooh... how 'bout midgets, monkeys, and tricycles!

I have cable and can't get the damn show. They decided to drop SciFi and put CMT (Country Music Television) in its place! Arrrrgh... I'm in hell.

...or with that same $500 you could've spent $495.00 on a decent web server, and then bought a case of your favorite soda.

How bout the blind, and or people with damaged/missing eyes? As it stands now, ATM's do have braille support.
I don't know about you, but some of my dreams are better left forgotten... and some could just get me in trouble with the Mrs. ;)
I'll pass on the ability to TiVo my nights sleep.

Qcast is where it's at! Until the official hard drive adapter is released, the qcast is the only elegant way to handle video.
