Why did companies like GoDaddy and Comcast switch to AFTER massive MS payouts? MS did that for hits and to control industries. It is how MS operates. I doubt that the top sites would go for 1million. BUT, they MIGHT if they were smaller than say top 200, and those above 200 MIGHT, if they were given 10-50 million EACH YEAR PER SITE. Sounds like a lot of money and it is certainly illegal, but MS has shown that they have absolutely no issues with legalities or ethics. In addition, they have proved that criminal behavior really does pay even when you are caught, IFF you are bright about it. Hell, NONE OF THEM do time. THey just lose a little bit of money on a fine and that is it.

We actually spread the money and approaches around so that we could figure out the best approach. Now, I have to read the idiot postings that LOVE coal/Oil, Hate AE, and at best tolerate Nukes. Or we have the pure nuke lovers that hate AE/coal/Oil. Finally, we have ppl like you that imagine that this is weapons research and not really a way to lower our energy costs.

Bigelow has a small line to build Kevlar material for their space stations. It is suppose to handle 17000 mph pieces. Seems to me that BA might want to get in on this if funds were to be done. At the very least, it helps gets their line started with building items.
It makes sense to capture and lose the small pieces. BUT, the large ones are lots of material in space that took a lot of fuel to get there. That would be a shame to lose those if they are together. Seems like we can push those into a higher orbit out of the way and then use them in the future.
But I think that I would prefer a set of these, and dispense of them after a shorter time (burn it up or capture it for material studies). For starters, imagine accumulating a bunch of that junk together and then losing the ship. It could actually make things worst.

I picked gold because it's a material most are likely to be familiar with. But it really doesn't matter what element you pick - there isn't one single element who terrestrial price isn't a small fraction of what it would cost to haul out of orbit, let alone mine it on the moon.
