By 2004, they were suppose to have dropped their trade barriers and have untied their money. They created a "basket" that is a total joke and their barriers are still up as high as ever. China is now pushing to keep things like the way they are until 2020. They are also trying to do the same with EU. Between the low quality and horrible politics, I refuse to buy from a number of these companies include GM and Chrysler.

They tend towards corruption. This is true everywhere. Heck, just look at EU. Watching the copyright/patent issues being pushed there. Many citizens object to America's INSANE IP policies, and their citizens are fighting them. But their federal politicians and employees are split. A number of their tactics have suggested that the changes have occured after at least 1 major company came in and pushed for software patents and copyrights. That was total corruption (just like here).

Sadly, we just have to get them to quit spying on Americans, and spy elsewhere (though they also need to stop spying on our allies top gov. officials).

Second, Gates agrees with you about DOD. He thinks that W, Cheney, and Rove have done nothing by throw money at it. He wants to kill a bunch of the complex money wasting programs and change to SOLID lower costs programs.

Finally, you are right. NASA does not get that much money out of the budget. Less than 1%. Nearly, all the other programs have a great deal more. But I think that Obama wants to know that we are on the right track.

While I grant you that we have some MAJOR screw ups with the shuttle and the ISS, it has taught us what it will take to stay alive for a LONG time in space. One of the biggest issues with the ISS for me is that the did not put the centerfuge unit up there. 3. due to chasing the short dollar, they look for the highest profits, which is disasterous in changing markets.
    4. Countries like China and India have their money pegged to our dollar. That is the politicians fault and must be addressed. China was supposed to free their money and instead, they have a basket that is controlled against the dollar. It is designed to keep jobs moving to those countries. The west (America, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan) needs to start raising slow tariffs against China, and possibly India, unless they follow through on their legal agreements. And yes, China had agreed to free their money in 2001.

The real problem is that Detroit HAD no real competition because we all say buy American, without thinking about where the cars are made. Right now, American content is actually higher in foreign cars such as Toyota, Honda, Lexus, etc. Right now, GM and Chrysler are pushing for manufactuering to be moved to CHINA! The real question is how should they get out of this?

The answer is BREAK THEM APART. Seriously. We should offer them loans and/or bail-out, a modified fast bankruptcy, and then they break each company that accepts the help into 3 or more new car companies with NO REGULATORS. This will create new companies with new management and a chance to compete. Once that is done, then they should not be allowed to buy, be bought, or merge with another company for a decade or more. Let them sink or swim. I think that they will learn to swim fast.

At the same time, we need to use about 1-2B for other small car companies. These need to be ZERO EMISSION cars only. So that means tesla would get their 400M loan. Not much at all. So would others that need it assuming they are American built (or at least nafta built). So that would mean that Phoenix would not qualify since they are actually a chinese car.
