With that said, I have to agree that we have plenty of space for adding solar. In particular, all of our roof tops esp. here in the west. We also have loads of wind and geo-thermal power. In the midwest, wind is awesome(which is why this article). And the east coast can do wind as well as more hydro, tidal, and wave.
NASA is not going to Mars via their means. It will be private enterprise. More importantly, all the parts are being developed. I think that we will see spacex, bigelow, and (blue origin|armadillo). It is almost certain that some billionaire will fund it. And as I have said numerous times, these will be one way trips for at least the first few trips. It is the only way to keep costs low. NASA will scream the first time that somebody dies, but the missions will continue. Why? Because we will have ppl on Mars that need resupplies, etc.
They only reason why the MSR is taking forever is due to lack of funds. We could easily have sent a trip there over the last couple of decades as well as even within 5 years. China and our billionares have the funding to send ppl to the moon.

Well, that is not quite accurate either. It is possible that the crew would have been killed. But a capsule on top WITH a heat shield, may very well survive. Of course, I really do not want to test the concept. And to call the 2'nd launch a total failure is way out there. By most rational RS definition, that was a partial launch. The first stage worked perfectly. And the 2nd stage had a fuel interruption leading to an early cutoff. According to the air force AND NASA, had spacex had either the baffles or a slightly different parms on their software, they would have made their orbit since the engines should have continued to burn.

So, can somebody use some copper coils to do the same to these? If so, then it could be used to increase local heat to the point of causing a cascade loss; i.e. here is a way to bring down a line, and causes a massive release of energy. Is this true?

NASA releases lots of items. For example, they were the ones that did the original network card drivers for Linux.
