    From China or From Russia?
China is engaging America in an Economic war. Russia is currently back to fighting us elsewhere. And both are attacking us over the net (and yes, we are going after them, but they are smarter and are doing more to protect themselves).
China continues to dump on the west, manipulate their money and basically block real trade with the west, other than S. Korea and Japan (in this case, they want them nervous and willing to give up all rights to the various waters around them and more importantly access to minerals and resources such as fish).
And yes, China's gov. goal is to rule the world, or at least be the one at the top and in control. You declare that China is good for the west? Yet, all of their Asian neighbors say otherwise.

As to Russia, that is about 1 man wanting total control. Right now, Putin is a dictator who is playing the same game that china is, only with 1 person vs. a small group of rulers.

The real issue is that they are mixing personal life with military. That absolutely should NOT happen.
The west continues to drop our guard on classified information which is foolish, esp. since most of personal computers are running Windows. This makes it trivial to crack.
What is needed is to require that personal stuff either not be ran on military laptops, OR that it be over a VPN/remote display, OR that it simply be on a virtual system, with the personal being the client, not the other way around.

The west is not taking Russia and China serious in their work to undermine and destroy us. We need to stop that.

In the end, it really does not matter what assumptions you or I make. What matters, is what will companies that own/operate trucks do? Right now, the large players are forking out money for reservations on Tesla trucks and that is shortly after they have test driven them, and seen it working, and then crunched numbers. That speaks louder than anything you and I can assume here.

  7. This is no different approach than companies like Amazon took to dominate. Tesla has 1 of 2 choices. Spend like mad building out the company, while also focusing in lowering costs vs established companies while putting profits later, OR grow slowly focusing on profits, knowing that you will be bought out by established companies. With the first approach, you will either dominate the industry, forcing them to change their approach, OR, you will bankrupt. Musk is in a full out bet the company mode WRT EVs ( and solar ) in which the outcome will be known within 2 years. Tesla will either be in top 5 car makers , or they will be gone ( likely bought by other ). He actually has his cost /car equal or lower than comparable models. At this moment, he needs to focus on M3's fit/finish and make it top notch. This will guarantee the demand for their cars. Then from there, they have to ramp up production to guarantee supply, with profits. If they are doing 1000k / week by Xmas and f/f is decent, I'm pretty sure they will be just fine. Otherwise....

Tesla has already shown that they would switch batteries in 90 seconds on the MS when ppl were screaming that it would take 30-60 minutes like the Europeans do.
However, Musk has said that they will NOT be switching batteries. Why not? Because the average truck driver does less than 800 miles / 24 hour period, and MUST stop at least once during an 11 hour period, and be down for some 90 minutes.
However, it takes 30 minutes to charge it 400 MPC, and an 60 minutes for a full 500 miles. But if they start off with 450 MPC, then another 400 at required stop is 950 Miles which is more than what they are legally allowed to travel.

America is LOADED with rail that carries cargo. The issue is that the owners do NOT want to switch to electric, which is too bad. It would make for expensive maintenance costs. Note that in a place like EUrope, Japan, etc. that has EXTREME population density, these make great sense.

Now, if the hyperloop really comes about, esp. if they are elevated over cargo rails, you can bet that they will switch to electrified cargo rail. But otherwise, if hyperloop is buried or not allowed to run over the rails, then they will not switch to electric.

And yes, electric trucks are CHEAPER to run than both ICE trucks as well as diesel-electric trains. It will be interesting to see what happens as BN switches to Nat Gas-electric trains. Those might be much cheaper to run than even electric trucks.

The major truck is thought to be around 1MWH worth of electricity. These will NOT be plugged into simple 120 or even 240s.
It will use a single super charger for that 6-8 hr charge.
And it will take their new mega charger to get that 40 minute recharge.

Now, if you look a who is ponying up for these trucks, it is obvious that they are counting on going distribution point to distribution point. In general, it will be some 300-400 miles. But it is 1000 miles from Denver to Chicago. If needed, they can drive for 500 miles, charge for about 1 hour and then drive another 500 miles.
This will cover some 80% of all trucks and train loads.

In addition, he has spent his own money and is nearing the launch of the Falcon Heavy (America's 3rd largest spacecraft, while carrying our 2nd heaviest payload), while working on what will be the world's largest launch vehicle, ever. Musk has restarted America's and the world's space program.

Tesla is NOT his most successful, but a LONG shot. In fact, it is actually slightly iffy. The reason is not because of bad financing, etc, but because of attempting to do far far more than any car maker since Henry Ford has done. As long as M3 has decent fit/finish, I have no doubt that by 2025, if not sooner, he will be in the top 5, if not 3 car makers in the world. If he blows the F/F, then he will likely be forced to sell. Hopefully not.
And production QUANTITY is a none-issue.

Management woes? In what ways? His employees LOVE the man. Investors Love him. They are either smart and going for the long approach, or foolish and shorting him (for the first time, the shorts made money on the production quantity issue; they are about to lose that BADLY).

Musk did NOT throw out the old ways. In fact, he has returned to America's old ways. It is TODAY's American MBAs that threw out the old ways and go for the short $ to line their personal pockets. It used to be that American companies operated like they do now in China and Germany, which is what made America great. Heck, Silicon Valley operated that way until these horrible MBAs got in there.
As somebody who has worked at Bell labs, Watson labs, HP, US West AT, I can tell you that ppl like Bill Hewlett, and Dave Packard would be DISGUSTED by what has happened to their company.
Thankfully, Musk is returning to that and rebuilding American tech. Heck, even now, many of the smaller SV companies are refusing to hire MBAs and are better for it.
