    I had a friend tell me that X was horribly slow. After tinkering with KDE and Gnome, I was inclined to agree. After I installed Enlightenment, I changed my mind - it's not X that's slow, it's KDE and Gnome. Try a different window manager and you might find Linux snappy enough.

    I'm not bashing KDE or Gnome, I find them both fairly usable but they were way too slow on my PIII era hardware.

    I'll echo one of the other comments here - I built an A7N8X-E Dx system for my Aunt and Fedora Core 2 installed flawlessly. I didn't have to go fix it once in the 9 months she had Fedora installed.

    If you look at the Google Talk Developer Info, they list plans to port the client to both Linux and OSX and plans to support SIP "in the near future".

    In the meantime, I imagine Google Talk will give Jabber the push it needs to really take off. I'd love to see the IM networks actually interoperate and I think Jabber adoption is a step in the right direction. This looks win-win to me.

    These stories are from Maxis' tech support hotline, from before Electronic Arts consumed their soul. I don't recall which game it was but one of the early Sim games either had a little card that came in the packaging or printed them on screen during the install, I don't really remember which as it's been a while.

    After I pointed out the missing barcode, they switched the open box printer for a new one. If the open box discount had been more than $50 I would've taken the open box one.

    I went to Future Shop last week to help a friend pick out a printer. After we grabbed the printer and brought it to the checkout, we noticed the barcode was missing. Turns out it was an open box return and whoever had returned it had cashed in the $50 rebate then returned the printer.

    I really can't understand how people can justify this to themselves.

    Honestly, I got my laptop for free so it didn't cost me anything. A quick scan of eBay tells me the battery for my laptop would cost about $60, however.

    Really I just want to know why there isn't a battery built into every computer - it's saved my ass more times than I can count.

    My laptop's battery came free with my laptop and lasts 4 hours. My desktop's UPS cost $60 and lasts 6 minutes.

    Where's my desktop batteries? It'd be really nice to be able to count on my machine not droping because of a momentary power interruption. This is one reason I find myself using my laptop more and more.

    Last year one of my relatives purchased a new PC that didn't have a floppy drive. It sucked having to tell them to go back to the computer store and get a floppy drive because Windows didn't come with SATA drivers and they needed to be loaded from a floppy before windows would install.

    The parents says, "Intel has been wanting to move to RISC chips for some time".

    Even if 100% of the gaming world won't be using PowerPC, the console world - including handhelds - will be using RISC processors. Nintendo's portables use ARM processors which are RISC (ARM-7 for the GBA and an ARM-7 and ARM-9 in the DS); the PSP has a MIPS processor in it - that leaves only PC gamers on x86.

    Mozilla has already been targeted - before the XPI installation whitelist was implemented, I would occasionally get XPI prompts on certain less-than-scrupulous sites. The devs jumped all over it and implemented the whitelist pretty quickly. Firefox will not save the ignorant from themselves but, at least in my experience, it has cut down on opportunity.

    Most of the popups I've seen recently were generated by flash but there are websites that have gotten around several built-in popup blockers using JavaScript in creative ways. There was an article on it here. I went through the comments and added script busting adblock filters for all the ad sites that were mentioned and that cleared it up, fortunately.

    Maybe I don't live in "most cities" but both of the places I've lived you get a $5-10/mo discount on cable Internet if you have cable TV. My parents have satellite TV and cable Internet and their Internet bill is still under $50/mo.

    The downside I can see to owning a DS instead of a GBA is that the DS will only play GBA games in single player mode.

    I own a number of games that have great multiplayer (wireless 2 player Dr. Mario rules) so personally I'll be keeping my GBA around if I get a DS.

    Considering that Scrabble was conceived 60-70 years ago ("during the depression", according to the Hasbro website), my opinion is that it should be in the public domain by now.

    Clearly, ripping off Hasbro's trademark was a bad idea and legally Scrabble is still under copyright. Illegal? Yes. Unethical? That's debatable.

    The sad thing is I've seen posts by fundamentalist crackpots on several message boards claiming the Tsunami was God punishing the heathen and that the reason this sort of thing doesn't happen in the United States is because people there are God-fearing.

    WTF?

    The fact that most of the U.S. is far away from the ocean must have escaped these idiots.

    The bit about Microsoft having to test IE7 against Gmail and Google Maps was an entertaining thought but I'd say it's more likely that Microsoft will do what Microsoft does best. IE's not done until Gmail won't run.

    The difference I can see with Google is that because their applications are web based (and thus fairly quickly repaired), the cost of another antitrust suit might outweigh the potential benefits of breaking Google's applications.
