Last time I went to the theatre, I had to queue so long for tickets that we missed the session we wanted. Had to wait around for the next one. Crap service, horrendous prices - would rather wait for the DVD to come out & watch it at home.
Without Itanium, they have nothing to run HP-UX on. Porting to x86 (seems to be well on the way) gives them a platform, but who would pay for it? People will go to AIX/POWER or Linux. HP will be back selling overpriced ink & crappy printers.
Dropping a bus on a horse, a human or mouse at the bottom of a thousand-yard mine shaft will still wreck the bus. Wouldn't be good for the creatures either (probably kill the mosquito too).
Good common-sense points, but I want to go a step further:
Should I junk my old car & (assuming I can afford the payments) buy a new fuel-efficient model? Is that really better for the environment? Same question for my fridge, freezer, TV, washing machine etc? Is a heat-pump (including manufacture, transport, power generation etc) really better for the environment than my wood-burner?
We replaced CFC's with 'green' versions, but did that really help - or just move the problem to the manufacturing site. Electric cars seem to be a good idea, but that depends on how the power is generated.
There are so many things that seem good until you really dig into them. Nobody seems to be providing full & truthful answers.
Israel can't afford to risk a nuke attack. Even if Iran build a viable bomb they may not use it, but Israel can't take that risk. Disrupting centrifuges & even killing a few scientists is a lot more palatable than a major military assault, but I have no doubt Israel will do everything they can to stop Iran building a nuclear bomb - with or without US support.
Would you wait for a nuke to be launched at your hometown before taking action?
Who is expected to pick up the pieces if the treatment has undesirable side-effects? Are people (in general) capable of understanding the risks? Would the same people who sign up to this also send money to Nigerian Prince's in exile?
We're already at 240v so our version will be twice as long!

I followed my intuition & barely skimmed the summary. Mining FB would be like making a BBC documentary about reality TV.
I'd be more worried about a methane explosion!
Not enough bandwidth available in NZ to SCP the images - sneakernet wins again!

Well said!

traffic lights that change when the train is half-way thru?
I'm sure Java would be kept a lot more up to date if version 'x' could still run software built when version 'n' was current.
I'm convinced there are people out there somewhere saying "We're not broke enough - how can we blow another $10 billion without starting a riot?"
"I know, lets try lasers on 747's again - spectacular success last time"
"Good - but when we're asked why we need them..."
"Those new fake missiles in NK could be a threat"
"Brilliant!"
not good PR
doesn't sound terribly down-scalable to me
Perhaps we just need to be more tolerant, no matter how opinionated the person next door is?
Half-life is timed with an atomic clock? Isn't that part of the equation?

Where's "+1 Sad" when you need it?

Take a small cut off the consumables & may well cover the cost of providing the blueprints.
