    Doesn't that kind of defeat the point of using GMail and its fast indexing/searching, since you won't be able to search messages?

    1GB isn't that impressive. I host my own mail server and get 400GB/the approx free space on my HDDs. Anyone with a permanant internet connection and basic knowledge of SMTP can do the same.

    You don't have to do much more than creating a full-page textbox and then using it like any other word proccessor. If a Word-style simple template was used as the default document, there would be no need for MS Word.

    I've used MS Publisher ever since 1997, and I've always loved it. Publisher lets me lay out the page the way I want it, whereas formatting is often a struggle with Word.

    I wonder why Publisher and Word are still seperate products, seeing how Publisher could trivially be improved to become a great Word proccessor in addition to a DTP package.

    Land of the free? Where large organizations can buy laws such as the DMCA. Where people are arrested for lecturing on cryptography? Where distributing a 7-line perl code can land you in jail?

    Freedom is expensive, but it's something worth fighting and dying for.

    That sounds extremely noble in writing, but I doubt many people including yourself would actually be willing to die in order to prevent a law such as this one from being passed.

    There is a delicate balance between complete apathy and out-of-control fanaticism.

    At least I doubt it's 8 hours from when the DVD is manufactured, or there would be some problems with transport/stocking ;)

    That's right, he sprayed graffiti on someone's house when he was 18 and now he's a felon for life. And he gets a DNA sample taken.

    You make it sound as though his punishment was extremely unjust, which it wasnt. A DNA sample is hardly the end of the world, and technically grafiting someones property is and should be illegal.

    I have had my DNA sample taken, as a result of a caution (not conviction) for "unauthorized access to computer data". My 'huge crime' was logging in to a small forum and reading a few PMs. Significantly less destructive than your friend who defaced other peoples property.

    From your DNA sample, they could track down anyone in your immediate family. That cannot be done with a fingerprint.

    Thats why the majority of the debate about how people without convictions should have their DNA sample taken is missing the point. If you ARE convicted, your parents/childrens/brothers/sisters DNA can all be identified, even though they arent officially on record.

    What did they distribute? 16 byte hashes which could be used to validate copyrighted works.

    It'll just be for add-on drives, allowing you to use the drives in a laptop with a PCMCIA-CF adaptor.

    Saying that, they are recognised by Windows(tm)(r)(c) out of the box, but I imagine the hitachi driver is more optimized for the particular drive type.

    By that reasoning 20,000 parallel Internet2 links will kick you'r trucks ass.

    You are trying to compare a single Internet2 link with an unlimited amount of tape drives all writing in parallel, which is not a fair comparison.

    Yes, and the bandwidth isn't that impressive either.

    It's amazing how many times I've heard the argument that a wagon full of tapes delivers bandwidth which can compete with our outperform Internet2. BULLSHIT.

    The people always forget or deliberatly ignore the fact that you need to write the data to tape, and then read it at the other end. The speed with which most tape drives can store data is often a lot lower than a 100Mbit internet link.

    I doubt the download speeds have that much to do with the protocol. The system is only used in Japan, where broadband internet grows on trees. Residential 100mbit connections are common. A difference from emule speeds (where most users have no more than 25kB upload) is to be expected.

    Ummmm, no. Owning the CD makes no legal difference whatsoever. Not unless you know that everyone whom you are uploading to also has the CD.

    Yes, but it is more difficult for a computer to identify the subject of a message, than it is for a human.

    Google can block anything mentioning "viagra", "prescription", etc at your request. The problem is spammers will just call them "l0ve organ enchancments", and once Google blocks that, they will call them "Tool lenghening capsules", etc. Spammers outnumber Google, and will continue thinking of spamfilter-evading tactics, and google can only implement blocks after the spam messages have already arrived. If the filters get too aggressive, legitimate mail will suffer.

    of course their popularity will make them a huge target of spammers' attention, but I have more faith in Google's abilities than I do in the spammers'.

    They still haven't succeeded in keeping spam sites from being added to their index. Every search includes at least a few "www.i-have-just-what-you-are-looking-for-and-a-fe w-more-things.com/your-search-query.html" pages. Spammers will find ways around Google's email filtering too.
