Try Xandros. They have a windoze-esque updater and very good support. Better than M$. They seem committed to the Linux desktop.

  3. Hiebook and eBookman on Best PDA To Read e-Texts On? · · Score: 1

On the low end, eBookman is a good etext reader. Unfortunately, it uses AAA batteries. There are a couple of them for sale on ebay and you can use mobipocket reader software for text, html and other formats. On the high side, check out Hiebook http://www.hiebook.com/ . It's a bit bigger but you can import/create etext files for this unit. I have been using ebookman for about ayear now and it's a good etext reader. I don't like the backlight and generally don't use it.

Until fat overpaid CEOs are looking down the barrel of being replaced by overseas managers who can move a company forward on sound business principles instead of stock manipulations and layoffs.

  6. The BETT and Video Games on Whose Desktop Would You Most Like To See? · · Score: 1

I read that the Beady Eyed Texas Twit spends his days working out, napping and playing video games. That's when he isn't 'working' by travelling around the country meeting his supporters and having dissidents blocked off from his sight. Back to the video games: any ideas? Think he can work through all of the solitaire games in four years? Or is 'Railroad Tycoon' a better match? I'd suggest RT but only if a lot of advisors helped him out.

  7. Das Boss on The Absolute Worst Working Environment? · · Score: 1

I was hired to do some very low level programming in the middle of a big aquisition. It meant doing a lot of the same stuff over and over. I was also the print distributor. The boss would come in at 5:30 am and start doing my job until I showed up at 6. The boss was an overweight workaholic who chuckled/snickered constantly. Almost like Muttley from the cartoon series: "Catch the Pidgeon". It was mostly women who loved nothing more than to stop work, walk in to the boss and complain that a report they didn't need had been delivered to them. The reports had absolutely no header information. You delivered them based on how they looked. When the other company had been consumed, the programming ended and I was a print operator full time. It lasted about two months and I walked out. There is a hiring freeze on so I guess the boss is still doing my job. I still get flinchy when someone walks up behind me and starts yelling. When the current job gets me down, I just think of that one and I feel much better.

  8. Traffic was terrible on You Are Here (On Earth) · · Score: 2, Funny

I had to park out near Rigel and walk in. Who wants to bet my radio will still be there when I get back? Rigel's a tough neighborhood. I walked in to a bar and ordered a shot. Everybody ducked.

Canon AS100. Two eight inch floppies in a seperate case. This guy I worked with was part of a geology club. When they upgraded to a pc, they gave me this beast. It came with either Dos 2.2 or CP/M (old brain cells) and db2. The printer had a propietary connection aand wouldn't work with my C64.

  10. Postal anybody? on Multiplayer Linux Games · · Score: 1

Loki used to sell Postal. It worked great for me on a Pentium 300 with 128 RAM. I think there's a German site that still offers the CD.

  11. The Pendulum Pen on When Word Processors Are Out: What's The Best Pen? · · Score: 1

You should really look in to the Pendulum Pen. In addition to being contoured for easy grip, it has a rotating point that's angled. You'll find a photo and description at: http://www.artsuppliesonline.com/catalog.cfm?cata_ id=7987

  12. Old Video Game on 3D "Crystal Ball" Monitors · · Score: 2, Interesting

Wasn't there a 3d video game in the mid 80s that used a crystal ball for the monitor? It featured (I'm sure I'm not making this up) a cowboy who travels through time shooting things. It didn't require any skill, you just had to know when to jump, duck or shoot. The arcade I saw this in had it against a wall so you couldn't really appreciate the 3d quality. In the same vein as the 'naked Princess' it had a miniskirked girl who travelled boy orb and told you why the cowboy was travelling through time.

  13. St. Louis Surplus Electronics Store on Great Surplus Stores? · · Score: 1

It's on Natural Bridge just west of I-170. Books, manuals, parts, old computers and 'vintage' electronic games without the high prices. Just about anything electronic. I been there many times when I worked over there and never saw the same person behind the counter.

  14. No retaliation for Spam on Ask ISP Owner Barry Shein About the Spam Wars · · Score: 2, Insightful

The problem with Spam is that there is minimal retaliation. You can send the prepaid envelopes back to the junk mailers and they get charged for that. You can slam the phone on telemarketers or play a catchy tune with the buttons why they try their pitch. the problem with spam is you can't get them back. Even if you filter, you still have to do something that does no damage to them.
