Use snail mail... Make EVERYONE that wants to sign in have a ID and password that must be MAILED to them to gain access to their account. Until then they use A.C.
Funny... A Stewie flashback had him working at the airport when Johnny Quest's team was boarding a plane.. he cleared everyone except for Raja and said that he was "randomly selected" and Raja says: "You didn't even look at the screen!"
Look, network neutrality doesn't make any sense (to me anyway...)
I PAY to have bandwidth on my ISP... THEY PAY to have LOTS of bandwidth to sell to the customers... the People that they get it from PAY some HUGE company (used to be Sprint I think... , Still is?) for that bandwidth to sell and they maintain those lines for ME. Everyone making profit on they way up the ladder.
Now YouTube comes along... And I want to watch a video... Gues what... SAME thing tracks back as above for YouTube. YouTube is paying for their bandwidth, one way or another. So, the REAL internet carriers that maintain the backbone for a FEE get to charge 2x for every site I visit!
First they eventually have revenue trickle back from me as a destination of content, and second they have revenue trickle back from the source of the content. That rule applies no matter WHERE the content comes from... This is NOT the FREE University internet that used to be! It was comercialized in the early 90's. (with advent of.com domains instead of just.edu's that used to exist.)
So If I go from my computer to Bittorrent site, they get paid 2x for that traffic... If I go to GOOgLE, they get paid 2x for that traffic... If I call out on IP fone like Vonage, they get paid 2x for that traffic!!!!
Someone pays to send, someone pays to recieve. JUST LIKE THE TELEPHONE! To have they say to me that they are gonna give my crappier service because I want to call a 1-900 # and they are gonna just use the phone lines to sell sex to me instead of me calling my grandma, would be outragous! This is all BS! We ALL eventually PAY for the service.
Who doesn't? Lots of.EDU folks? Maybe, but I sure that they even pay something to their backbone providers... and HOW many.EDU sites host large traffic sources like YouTube? (Bittorent maybe, by a good ADMIN can fix that if they REALLY want to.)
So it boils down in my book that it's all BS.. and there should be NO Throttleing of ANY content based on who you are... If someone wants dedicated IP Backbone on the empty fiber, thats different, but don't throttle my stuff just because I'm useing the service for what it was intended, passing information from point A to Point B.
Mr Clifton's business partner and catalogue manager Drew Thompson said their 16-millimetre film version of the Apollo 11 landing contains images never released to the public.
Yep... Images never released to the poublic, like Armstrong toking on a fatty just before stepping out to get that ultra zero-G buz Feeling... or was that "Buzz' Aldrin who thought about how cool it'd be to get toked on the dark side...;)
And as for more "VODOO", how many times do you get: "It was broken till you came over to fix it... Now it is just fine." Happens all the time... I respond with "it must be my magnetic personality" but I know it just bugs folks that have had a problem and spent 45 minutes or a few hours rebooting a number of times and doing everthing over and over and I come in and it magically "fixes" itself. The other thing that I've told them is that the computers are afraid of me and straighten right up or I'd format them and install Windows ME.
Of course for Windows there is always a "REBOOT" vodoo that I do before I attempt to "FIX" anything... Usually fixes 99% of the problems right away.;) Then I give them a good dance about why it didn't work right... Cause if I told them they were just f&$#ing idiots, and don't deserve to own a computer; I don't think I'd get good reviews or repeat business on the side.;) (Users = JOB SECURITY)

Interesting... Back in 90 in College, I found the same thing/info... And now out of habbit, whenever my computer seems to bog down, I find myself spinning the cursor. EVEN though, I know it has NOTHING to do with current problems. It's just "back there" in my subconscience. I usually laugh when I catch myself doing this type of stuff...
I also remember my old Tandy COCO Days with my external 300 Baud modem... I could dial into Delphi but I couldn't start pressing keys or the Term Program I wrote would freeze. So I had to wait till connection was established and got to know the tones pretty good even up to my 2400 baud modem I last had on it... To this day, When I listen to fax machines, I picture the handshake protocol while it is happening, and I HATE the fax machines that mute the tones! (I will even go up to the copier/fax unit at work and use the send immidiately, dial offhook mode so that I KNOW that it was sent and not have to bother checking for the little xfr report later...
Of course this reference brings back another trick of mine. When I worked as a lab op in college, I worked the opening and closing shifts often. (beer right after, and passout in the lab overnight to open it up in the AM. Not always, but NOT kidding either.:) Point is that when I closed a lab, students would shut their computers off near the end of the night, and the monitors would be left on. I found that I could pick up the sound of the flyback transformers if I just closed my eyes and focused on it. So when Shutting down a lab: I'd walk in, turn out lights, listen. No monitors or computers, fine, turn around / leave & lock it. If I did hear a monitor, without opening my eyes, I could walk to it turn it off and then leave. It became a little game. Even now, if I hear a CRT that is "about to go bad" it drives me nuts because the sound just jumps out at me even in a crowded room. Haven't noticed it with LCD's yet.
This is a legit point! Slashdot does seem to be the hangout spot for the paranoid. AND Often in the USA today, people shrug their responsiblities... They want the government to care for them from cradle to grave. When that care involves saving a few folks and causeing minor irritability to the rest of us, they complain. BUT, let the government do nothing, and they would have bitched all they way to some lawyer about how nobody in the FBI, etc did ANYTHING to stop it.
You CAN NOT have your cake and eat it too... Personally, my wife a I travel a few times a year and this restriction will NOT affect us in anyway except the wait behind the dipsh&ts that ignore the new reality or expect an exception to be made for their tiny bottles of shampoos.
Heck, the way the question is asked, it could be a terrorist looking for a new spot to jump a hop to a major airport and not have to deal with hard security...
Get over it & Grow up these ARE REAL THREATS! And the next one that gets missed and ignored will piss everone off that it was a conspiracy to LET it happen to further agendas. Catch 22...
I may be wrong about this, but it was Edison who accused DC power of being more dangerous ("Westinghoused") only to have AC adopted for the pleasant US custom of humanely frying criminals.
From: http://www.ieee-virtual-museum.org/collection/even t.php?id=3456872&lid=1
Edison was less than thrilled with the emergence of Westinghouse's technology, which threatened his own dominance in a field he virtually created. He also had genuine concerns about the safety of AC. The two men engaged in a public relations battle to determine which system would become the dominant technology.
I think you meant to say that "Edison who accused AC power of being more dangerous", but hey whats a letter or two among fiends?;)

If you have a BIG loan, like you indicated, it will still have interest due some day... If your defered until gratuation, then you need to find a HIGH interest, LOW RISK (should you need to pay as much as possible back asap). Also, you need to make MORE interest than your loan will incure...
ie, if you have a car loan at 8%, and CC's at 12% and you find a chunk of cash. You pay the CC's FIRST because they "COST" more in interest. If your Savings account is only giving you 4%, then it is not worth it to save until the CC's and the car loan is paid off, because any money you "save" will actually cost you 4% that would have been towards the car.. etc.
Make sense? (ie, think of it as a math problem.. total % cost - Total % earn = cost// a negative number is GOOD)
This means you DO NOT want:
Local Savings (not enough interest) CD's (locks the $ up for very little more interest) Stocks (too risky for your future) Gambling (too risky for your future) Drugs (too risky again-- I'm not kidding, another story for another day... )
Two things that you *MIGHT* want to consider...
#1: Online Savings Account (I use ING Direct, always higher than the local banks...) or #2: Investment in HARD bullion. BUY Low, Sell High.
Now the #1 option is easiest, low risk, long term type. This is what most people will want.
the #2 option is HIGH risk, but easy to convert. If you catch the market when gold or silver is down, you buy as much as you can. Later as market spikes, take advantage of the chaos and sell. Even if the market does nothing but tank, you still have a HARD currancy basiclly... so you'll never loose it all. (unless they figure out how to transmutate Lead into Gold)
Of course, I'm not a professional anything, so please don't blame me if you loose any money. Always consult a professional.

Actually, I'd say it is next to impossible to have a net positive effect on the environment today, unless you went off in the mountains and tried to live like a true native, but they even clear cut, culled large herds over cliffs for easy food, etc..
You must realize that MOST folks can't control their impact on the environment until they are imancipated (18 avg? in our society), right? Thats 18 years of glutony and waste of environmental resources.
Notice, I didn't say impossible, because a few GREAT ideas can be a bonus against one's "E-KARMA", like if someone ever does create room temp fusion, etc... But for most of us, it is a Neg. equation from birth...
So, next time you think that you can save the planet by buying a hybrid car, just pick up a pack of razor blades... because China will output thousands more in CO2 than you or I will ever save with out few E-Cars...
Don't take this as me saying environmentalism is bad... Just that for most of us, the end result would be better if we just off'ed ourselves upon reaching this enlightenment.

Seriously, WHY DOES it take a 4ghz computer to play solitaire?
Ahhh... I see your point.. This is the same argument that I use against radical environmentalists. They try so hard to protect the environment (burn/blow up HumV & SUV Dealerships, destroy property to liberate trees and/or animals, force government groups to enact so many laws as to make it nonecinomical to build new refineries, etc..)
In the end they fail to realize that their own existance is makeing a HUGE negative impact on the environment. (waste, harvest and production of food - even Vegans, CO2 exhaled, H2O resources depleted and/or contaminated by it's consumption)
In the end, All GOOD Radical Envrionmentalists should take a gun to the head (or nife to wrists for a less polluting method) as soon as they come to this realization of the amount of damage that is done to earths delicate balance on their birth.
But I guess this is a little "off topic" and I expect I'd be labled as such... Damn.

States burned most of that money... Lawyers were made multi-millionaires because of their "fees"
The idea for using it for Documentation is great, but for 'knowledge' You HAVE to have a CLOSED System that publishes their works... (like world book, Britannica, etc..) Otherwise ANYONE can put ANYTHING in their and it is up to a bunch of human eyes to catch it... and human error and lazyness results in bad articles of information... Including just plain outright lies, changed legit articles, and even giberish and racist rants.... At least a Legit publisher has a reputation and income source to protect in the satisfaction of the readership... Wiki cares about its reputation, but other folks abuse it because they don't care about their reputation with fake accounts or AC. And ther is no income from entering or changing or selling the IP, so it only gets the attention from those folks who don't care to pay for something in the first place...
Besides, the Wikipedia has 2 strikes against it on birth, and that is why I will NEVER use it as an authoritive source. 1) Do you believe EVERTHING YOU READ!? 2) "I saw it on the internet, so it has to be true."
Hell people, go to a Library if you don't want to BUY books... At least that takes #2 out.. (or you could subscribe but lets not go there...) One of my biggest pet peeves that I have to tell the Students AND TEACHERS:
The INTERNET is NOT a replacement for the LIBRARY!
Again, on the board, 100 times...
the INTERNET is NOT a replacement for the LIBRARY!... ad infinum
If your gonna give it all away, I'll get in line. But after you give it to me, I'll go buy gems, jewelry, gold, etc.. things that ARE tradeable if you know the right folks. And, if you produce a small service (say fix computers, like I occasionally do on the side..) then you use the BARTER system... Say a case of beer or the neighbor who has a ridermower so I have a weekend I don't have to pushmow it, etc... etc...
We all have to live in the "system", but the fun part is learning where & when you can circumvent it...
Funny... This was my first thought when I read it, the whole "what if our existance is just some lab experiment that is next in the termination schedule." idea... Makes you wonder when you go to sleep if you'll see the next sunrise, or if this experiment will be decleared a failure.:)
Well, first it has to be intercepted by NSA to check for terror links, then decoded and cleared... Then the computer has to be checked for keyloggers and trojans at startup... EM Shielding in place first... and then if the 120V comes from a CLEAN resource the senator would be allowed to turn on his computer... Yep, I could see it taking days, also...;)
Besides, WHERE in the constitution does it give us the RIGHT to instant email/internet? I love this particular argument with our students when they complain about us "limiting their free speech"... Folks get tooo uppity when their "internets" don't come instantly...
I personally call it the "McDonalds' mentality" - "I want it, I want it now, and I want it to go... No fries please.... HOW MUCH!"
Hmm... Does reading english and speaking english the same? If so, then only those that can read english will be offended and complain..:) good news is that only those of us that can read english give a damn to complain...
Here is an ironic example that I should use to illistrate... A person perfering english will complain about all the spanish speakers around. And if a soft-hearted libral english understanding person hears/understands, then they complain about how insensative it is. Maybe try to pass laws for "diversity", etc...
BUT. (the irony) if you reverse the situation: A Spanish speaking person perfering spanish will complain about all the English speakers around. An if a soft-hearted libral Spanish understanding person hears/understands, then they WILL AGREE and be on their way. (Or just laugh and agree...)
Get it... It's a double standard. "THEY" can have their opinions, but we are pummled for ours. Why? I personally feel it might be some type of inner guilt thing. They just feel tooo bad for thinking the same things at one time, but can't admit the feelings to their own inner soul because it goes against why they "THINK", they should be feeling/doing, etc. So they lash out at others for the very same thougths/feelings they are secretly guilty of.
Hmm... Once again I ponder: Interesting concept....
BTW, this is not a politics thing, just something I've observed. Take it for what you will.
"A small camera capable of tilt and pan operations is fixed to the underside of the drone which sends the video directly to a laptop command station. Once launched, the craft is set to fly autonomously with global positioning system (GPS) coordinates and a fixed flight pattern.
Ok, Scratch previous contents of needing guns... Just get a laptop with stumbler... find the 'WHY-FLY' connection (he-he, I'm soooo Punny...;) and post it to SLASHDOT... Then watch the plane (AKA, DRONE) stall and crash as it gets slashdotted as everyone logs into the drone to see the video of the next hi-way chase on the LA freeway...
Could bring NEW meaning to the terms "CRASHING A SERVER"...:)
Actually, I'm not a criminal, and I'd STILL take a shot at them if I lived where they are...
You cant throw away privacy rights just to protect a minority of citizens... and a government that monitors its citizens like this would be rather opressive... (even worst than listening to aunt betsey's phone calls)
Oh, it's here in the USA's LA... oh... well... I... Uh... Guess...
(point is, it would be easier to kill myself and get reincarnated to a REAL free society than to put up with this... REAL free society = living in rain forest with aboriginal peoples, YMMV. That is, untill they get pissed at the sudden influx of people and kill us all.... Hmm... ok, so this is starting to sound trollish, I think I'll stop now...)
Actually, It's HR's Problem that they got some prima donnas... Bad HR people can result in BAD employees...

My Boss is X-Navy... He's good to work with, fair to us, and keeps things lively and fun. So, I don't know about the other parts of the military, but at least that Navy Squid does an ok job.

Otherwise ANYONE can put ANYTHING in their and it is up to a bunch of human eyes to catch it... and human error and lazyness results in bad articles of information... And ther is no income from entering or changing or selling the IP, so it only gets the attention from those folks who don't care to pay for something in the first place...
... ad infinum
Again, on the board, 100 times...
the INTERNET is NOT a replacement for the LIBRARY!
Makes you wonder when you go to sleep if you'll see the next sunrise, or if this experiment will be decleared a failure. :)
Yep, I could see it taking days, also... ;)
HOW MUCH!"
Interesting concept....
:) good news is that only those of us that can read english give a damn to complain...
Everyone speaks english, so what is the big deal?
Hmm... Does reading english and speaking english the same? If so, then only those that can read english will be offended and complain..
Everthing has to be broadened and penetrated in marketing speak? ;)
OT, I know... I know....
"A small camera capable of tilt and pan operations is fixed to the underside of the drone which sends the video directly to a laptop command station. Once launched, the craft is set to fly autonomously with global positioning system (GPS) coordinates and a fixed flight pattern.
;) and post it to SLASHDOT... Then watch the plane (AKA, DRONE) stall and crash as it gets slashdotted as everyone logs into the drone to see the video of the next hi-way chase on the LA freeway...
:)
Ok, Scratch previous contents of needing guns... Just get a laptop with stumbler... find the 'WHY-FLY' connection (he-he, I'm soooo Punny...
Could bring NEW meaning to the terms "CRASHING A SERVER"...
:p
(Hmm... I should post AC so that my coworkers don't think I'm talking about them... Even if I am.)
My Boss is X-Navy... He's good to work with, fair to us, and keeps things lively and fun. So, I don't know about the other parts of the military, but at least that Navy Squid does an ok job.
Hmmm... After re-reading this, I wonder if I should set his home page to this comment...
