  3. Publishers are killing the newspaper on Internet is Killing the Newspaper · · Score: 1

I read the paper regularly from 1974 till about 2000 For starters, the Chicago Tribune twice endorsed George Bush would for president. That lack of common sense makes anything else they might write about highly suspect. I get sad when I think of the number of trees that died to print 26yrs worth of sports sections that I threw in the recycling bin without looking at. Most of the crap that gets reported on is of no interest to me. Too often the stories are about stuff that doesn't matter - questionable trends, celebrity blather and/or is some thinly veiled gushing over an advertiser's upcoming event. Their new lite versions of the paper are even more vacuous and stupid than the regular version. Third, the stuff that does interest me has been watered down for a general audience to the point that what they are saying is is no longer informative or engaging. I would buy the paper just for the daily comics, but they are so afraid of offending someone that all they publish now is pablum. I can catch Dilbert & Doonebury online and will never have to waste another second passing over the Garfield mediocrity that the comics page has sunk to. Fifth, I used to deal with their production dept and was treated so shabbily that I wouldn't buy their rag anymore even if it was quality. Mass media can't die fast enough to suit me.

"This reality is not going to change. In fact it will only get worse as technology coverage is handed to newer, less-qualified observers who simply cannot use a Microsoft Windows computer. I'm not a writer, but I use both platforms every day. Windows is clunky and irritating. Every time I am forced to move to my Win box, I am reminded of why I am such an Apple fan. Maybe that's where all the gushing writers are coming from too. Come to think of it, Dvorak is clunky and irritating too. Maybe he's too identified with MS products and the distortion lies in him.

I'm a graphic designer, at least I was trained as one, too often these days I am a code monkey and sometimes project manager. My office is split about 50-50 between Macs & PCs because even though I greatly prefer my G4, I know that the great unwashed tend to use Windows so all my work has to be be tested on that platform. I absolutely loathe walking across the room and sitting down at the PC to do anything. It is clunky in ways that are literally painful.

If Windows is Microsoft's idea of aesthetics and craftsmanship, I'm not even curious enough to look at this.

I spent about 30 hrs this week working the CSS. Here are some of the couple dozen sites I visit regularly. They're not all tutorials, but all are useful. There are a lot of place where standards and the real world usage clash. A couple of tips from me - Build and test your pages in Mozilla first. Even though MSIE still has a huge lead in mkt share, Slashdotters will be surprised to find out that Explorer is a stagnant sun dried dog turd, full of buggy, half-assed standards implementation. It's much easier to do it right first, then insert workarounds so the CSS displays correctly in Explorer. It's easier to achieve the results you want if you start at zero. Null the defaults so that all the implicit layout collapses. * { margin: 0; padding: 0; borders: 0; } If you find these links useful, please pay me back by checking your work on a Mac too. As a website user, I get really sick of seeing display wackiness - especially lines of type with squashed leading or running beyond the container div because nobody bothered to test in a Mac environment too.
  19. Bullshit. Stop blaming web designers on Firefox Continues Gains against IE · · Score: 1

Web designers don't want to design for IE only, we hate it at least as much as you do, but our pointy haired bosses and clients tell us to that there is no budget to make things work for such a small percentage of users. Just for the record, for the last year and 1/2 I've been building my pages to work with Gecko engines first, then hacking backwards to get some reasonably consistant result in the crap Microsoft products known as 5.1, 5.5 and 6.0. (Still the majority browser even on Slashdot) I just want my layouts to look similar across platforms, monitors and browser brands and degrade gracefully without spending 3 days per page massaging for every last glitch. Nobody blames the browser bugs or willful lack of standards support, it's always the site designer.
