I strongly agree with p3bf on the DLP issue. I drove 20 miles from Dallas to Plano to watch it tonight at the Cinemark Legacy. The quality was just astonishing. The large print he mentions tho kinda looks anti-aliased and 'neat'. It looks as if you are watching the render output right there in the theater!

This is because when SWBell used DHCP, customers of basic service could load up as many computers as they wanted on the line, and all of them would grab an IP.

    Not exactly what they wanted.

So they changed the system last month and now people are forced to pay extra for the enhanced service to get more IPs. They still limit you on that though, as I currently have about 9 computers in my house. Nothing FreeBSD+NAT can't fix :)
Overall their service is great, I've had it since April 12, 1999 and in that time it has gone out twice. I also have an appointment to install the self-install kit for a client Wednesday. Thanks for the business, SWBELL!!

The device manager claims that every PCI device is using IRQ 9. Shit. No way to fix it, and no word out of Asus. Abit KT7, here I come!

    There you have it.

I, for one, am getting damn tired of my 1.5 meg dsl. In my new house, i had fiber optic cable installed to the alley, where it is waiting for the missing last-mile fiber provider. It would be great to have a neighborhood LAN, and to be able to play various games with the entire town at 1-2ms pings :) Not to mention that 30gps porn problem, just need a huge hard disk array and a sniffer/packet grabber to snarf all of the porn that the entire neighborhood looks at. Then i'll be able to make one of those little matrix-folder-with-a-string on all of my neighbors. -Jeff

Personally, I prefer to just throw in a name-brand NIC and hook up to my network when i install windows on clients' computers. Installing drivers from a network folder and/or the internet over a fat pipe is much easier than asking a client to bring every cd for their computer, or digging through a shoebox full of disks. This also has the advantage of updating the computer to the latest drivers available, averting some problems. I also go ahead and run the windows update for my customers, to save them time and frustration. -Jeff

I had Marcus@Home in the Park Cities since May of two years ago until April of this year. I was very satisfied with the service until @Home moved into the area about a year ago. I experienced the exact same problem as you since February of this year with the 128K limit. EVEN WITH THE LIMIT, they pulled the plug on me because I ran a IP Masq router since they don't allow you to purchase more than 3 IP addresses. Also with SWBELL.net DSL, I get a 20ms ping to you there at utdallas.edu :) and frequently see 190K/sec transfers, which is my downstream cap.

I run servers on my DSL connection from SWBELL in Dallas, which is managed by the same people who manage PacBell. As long as it's not illegal, they don't care what you do. They do, however, limit my speed to 128kbps. This is acceptable though since they give me free reverse control of my IPs on my NS. These policies would differ from area to area.
