I don't know anything about Minsky, but I have noticed the same thing. People researching AI are often working on things that excites laymen, little buzzing robots running around doing nothing. And while they might use some kind of AI, they're still just little buzzing robots, belonging in the mechanics department, not AI research.
Have you been reading too much science fiction again?
It is rubbish, and AI has got nothing to do with Johnny 5, Transformers or the Decepticons, no matter how cool you think they are.

I think this knowledge will reamin out of our reach for ever.
A solid theory of the ongoings of our brains, would at the same time be a solid theory of how god works, and I just can't see how one would understand something that is bigger than all of us.
To those who want to explain everything with mathematics, I've always said "make a differential equation that models my soul, then tell me what my favourite colour is". That shuts them up allright.
We have already shown that there are fundamental uncertainties in nature (Heisenberg), can you be sure that these uncertainties are not divine intervention, simply what really gives us free will. Remember that it's almost 250 years since Darwin wrote his Evolution of the species, and scientists have yet to produce a solid proof that this is indeed how things work. I don't see how we would ever be able to create an entirely autonomus entity (AI) with this in mind.
I can only guess it haves something to do with the numbers used inside computers (binary, on the fsb or something), how that relates to Slashdot is beyond my comprehension.
Best song on the avalanches cd. Especially the parrot scratch part.
Yep.. the parrot scratching part is excellent. "Can you think of anything else that talks, other than a person? A bird? Yeah" Dj dexter is the man.
There's a breezeblock and a live mix of their's available on most P2P networks, the breezeblock is incredible, mixing 80's electro with bob dylan can't be easy, but they seem to do it effortlessly. The live set rules too.
Every time an article like this is posted to Slashdot, the poster mentions that they want to use a single T1 divided by 150-500 people.
Now, what on earth is the point of that? Why don't they all chip in on a modem for the local library or something like that? It'll cost less, and the speeds will be about the same, if you calculate in the time spent waiting in line.
While we're totally offtopic here, anybody else noticed the "Byu a Troll" banner ads here on Slashdot? I didn't click it, but there were three different mini ads on the top banner with "Norwegian Trolls", "Garden trolls" and a third one.
Please don't spread the word about Soulseek. Especially not on big sites like Slashdot. The central sever is overloaded enough as it is, the audiogalaxy crowd have almost ruined it already. If spreading the word meant more paying users, then maybe they could afford to upgrade the server, but the I don't think advertising it on Slashdot brings the right kind of people.
And for those of you not in the know, Soulseek is primarily for electronic music, so don't go there to download the latest Britney album.
You freedom fighting, democracy spreading Americans really should develop a more thorough understanding of these concepts before you start your berserker rage through the middle east.
I hold the American people responsible for the crimes the American government have committed and are committing in other countries.

Three to go..
Expect articles on tentacle hentai and medivieal festivals.
than my overclocked 2400 (in gigahertz that is).
Yes, but "filtered" does not indicated wether the packets were just dropped by a tcp/ip stack, or if it was firewalled.
It's not at all obvious.
We are coming to a point in history where US law is converging to global law. Military might talks. Mind you, it doesn't work the other way.
The spam assholes of America are some of the least dangerous assholes though. The US is brim full of more dangerous assholes.
This is interesting. I hate it when people put a computer on the internet, but freaks out when harmless packets reach it's network interface.
I've been using nmap for quite some time now, and it's an excellent tool by all accounts.
My question is, do you plan to implement firewall discovery? Instead of just reporting what ports are open, you could report:
- closed
- opened
- filtered (no reply)
- firewalled (firewall reply)
Like suggested in the latest phrack.

Well.. rughead doesn't imply nationality.
And btw, if there are 10 kinds of people in the world, why do you only list two?
Depends on the perpetrator.
If it's a rughead, then it's terrorism. Else it might just be a crime.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out.
coupled with self debugging code.
they'll render it useless, I tell you.

Joke?
If you get four first posts in a row, you will get editor privileges. That's how some of the present editors got their status.
I know.. it's sad :(
Used to just be us elitist IDM'ers :)

Check out the Madonna remix project for the original sample and some nice remixes.
The "All Your Fucking Music Are Belong To Us" remix is nice :)
Why do you think it's any more difficult to save anything you stream to disk, than it is to write anything to a disk?
Streaming isn't some kind of magic ritual. It's only packets arriving on your computer, just in time for you to play them.
Ok, don't read the article, but read the Slashdot blurb at least.
Or did you mistakenly think that Spymac was another name for Apple?
So democracy only works one way?

First of all, it would take quite a lot of money to buy them.
And secondly, if you did, you would have to get rid of monkeyboy somehow.
