I ran into this situation very recently, im in the process of buying a house. It was a bit of a shock to me how much personal information they wanted. And most through email. And how my data is being passed along from business to business without good security.
I use good practices on my side like two factor authentication, and ssl on everything, even a bit of pgp. But the other side who knows.
Ive found a pretty simple way of making very complex passwords. There are many many combinations to this method: d3d3E#E# g5g5G%G%
a1S@d3F$ 8 char, lowercase, uppercase, numbers, special char, no dupes. Look where the keys are, and when the shift key is used. You can get pretty creative with this method.
They talk as if we have a lot of choice of which providers we can pick from, well most people don't.
This whole thing of charging Content Providers more to built better pipes is BS. Thats what the whole tax cut for ISP's was about, to build better pipes and to save money by the tax cuts.
As we all know cable internet is much faster then phone copper. And to update copper they need too put in fiber, which cost us. Cable doesn't have that issue. It does cost a bit more, but you get much better speeds.
So what if all the ISP's started charging CP's? Cable would make a killing with no return to the consumer, DSL wouldn't get that much of an upgrade, not for awhile. Even if DSL co's did put in more fiber to the neighborhood DSLAMs, they still cant match what Cable can do.
So its a Loose Loose for both sides. Cable, no better speeds, DSL, a little better speeds... when ever they get around to it, and not that much better of speeds.
From what ive been told is that they(ISP's) need a better backbone, and better pipes within the ISP. For the copper lines they really need to have a damn good plan in place.
Gentoo gives you 100% control over your system and how things are built. It does NOT force you to do anything.
"You will need to fix things that break in the upgrade process..." Like what? This past year there have been some major changes in the Linux world like: glibc, gcc, xorg, apache(Gentoo went to the standard) and mysql are some the things I can think off of the top of my head. Because of how Gentoo updates, big updates like these might break things if your not watching what your doing. And if your blindly updating your system and overwriting confings when you do etc-update, its your own damm fault.
There comes a point in where a package is marked 'stable' for some distros, but if you look on the project site, its old and outdated.
You would have thought they would have ceased her harddrive when served her papers.
Its called data integrity. If your going to do a case on someone your going to want proof of data on the harddrive.
If you wait a few months or a year down the road and you expect the data to still be there, your nuts.
What IF she did a format or wipe, or its not even the same harddrive BEFORE she was served her court papers?
That would pretty much make this case void, no real proof that she ever had these files on her computer.
All these cases are very iffy, so little proof that these people truly had these files on their systems.
They think a program listing files from an dynamic IP is a copyright violation, they need to get their heads checked.
1. Try to find an answer by searching the Web. 2. Try to find an answer by reading the manual. 3. Try to find an answer by reading a FAQ. 4. Try to find an answer by inspection or experimentation. 5. Try to find an answer by asking a skilled friend. 6. If you're a programmer, try to find an answer by reading the source code.
I might be marked down because of this. But what I see day to day in the IRC, very few new people do these very simple things. This is why we go off on them, they dont even try to find the answer on there own.
We all know this is a BS Patent.
These people at the patent office must never use the net, or read about for that matter, or just under a rock for the past 10+ years.
This needs to change.

1.1: Yes Anchorage is a pretty big city, still doesnt matter, the AF wouldnt let it happen. To much of a risk/threat of something going wrong.
2: Unless this guy really knows what hes getting into, the local and Fed gov wont let him, to much of a risk of him self, and the area around him.
Im about 5 miles away from major OC lines running up the I-15 here in soCali. I cant even get T1 or ISDN out here on this phone system, that is how screwed up verizon is. I would be willing to pay $100 a month for 1.5Mb service, no joke. Our whole "broadband" service in the USA is a joke.
The major telco's dont want to give up there cheep lines that they use for their phone services. While they still change an arm and a leg for basic phone service. I really wished the FCC would crack down on these ISPs and the lines that they own. WE really need better internet connections here in the US.

This tech has been around for a very long time, just not in the public sector.
If you look at any high security building(NSA, etc) they will have multi layers on the outside and inside of the buildings.
Not only is it physical security, but sound and wireless security.
