Take Windows out of a retail box and compare it to Linux out of a retail box. I'll bet you lots of money that Linux works better.
The only reason Windows works better on most laptops is because you're using a copy of Windows with the drivers built in. I've seen people who are marginally technically competent trying to upgrade Windows on a laptop. It's not pretty, and you better hope that the drivers even exist for your OS of choice. There are a ton of machines that don't have Vista drivers for everything, and from what I've read, it's even worse than Linux compatibility. But hey, the wifi works unless it's a bleeding-edge chipset, and then you have to update for it to work. Almost like with Linux.
I had an instructor in college who was a brilliant algorithmist. Could come up with a working, efficient algorithm for anything, and he'd do it quickly. If we implemented the algorithm, the code would always work great.
His Win98 box on his desk was the most virus-infested machine I have ever seen.
I still consider him a great computer scientist... just not a great operator. But going for the requisite car analogy, I'll bet most race car drivers don't know all the physics and metallurgy needed to build a car, even if they might be able to put the parts of an engine in the right place. That doesn't mean that the engineer is a useless reference, it just means you shouldn't go to him for racing tips.
On the other hand, I wouldn't suggest Java before C++. I had a buddy who learned Java first, and it may have been the way that it was taught, but memory allocation and such never made sense to him until he learned C++, then everything he learned in Java became clear, and he got much better, almost overnight.
What scanner? Every HP scanner I've plugged in works quite well for me. But I've only tried a couple. My current one works better than it does in Vista, because there aren't any drivers for it in Vista (or XP, AFAIK)
Linux will never work for you then. You're too used to Windows, and you just ignore the things that don't work on Windows. I guarantee you that you go out of your way to install various programs and codecs because Windows just won't play some media out of the box, you have 3-4 different media players depending on what you're playing, gotta deal with Patch Tuesday updates, the Windows Firewall, and all kinds of other nifty things that are just ignored by Windows users, but EVERY little thing they get to do with Linux is picked on.
Linux is MUCH more turn-key than Windows any more. Anyone saying otherwise is selling something.
No, it's not a crime. But it's also not a crime to ask people for that information, and not go out of your way to encourage their anti-social behavior.
There is only one O in the word lose. Do you not even read your own writing? Have you seen ANYONE other than ignorant blog posters using the word "loose" in the context you do?
Asphalt's nice, but concrete works for roadways, too. We've even got a number of them here in Colorado, where there are pretty bad snow and ice storms and such, they really are pretty nice any more.
Why can't we maintain a world where everyone has a car? Nuclear power to generate the hydrogen... and there's always new nuclear material being manufactured in the earth's core. That's a lot longer term than oil at least, and perhaps solar might catch up one day, and we'll be able to turn off the bird and bat killing wind generators.
Milk, the cows are killing the environment. They take up too many resources, and belch and fart methane into the air. Milk is worse than eating 15 entire heads of lettuce.
Problem is, the DRM doesn't work. They just don't even know enough to know what's wrong, and the store won't let them return the defective damn game. So they blame Windows, or that game, but they'll still buy another game from the same published.
Cause and effect is lost on many people, doubly so when it comes to that magic computer thingy.
Naah. Hench nerds still don't have the social skills, but they aren't beat up on as much by the jock types.
It's still a broad generalization... I'm very much a nerd, but still have decent social skills. I can pretend to be mostly normal if I have to;) But many nerds don't realize that social skills are still a skill that requires effort and time and practice to develop, just like athleticism, or video game playing, chess club, whatever.
I'd love to see any soccer player (even in pads) take a hit from an NFL player and get up.
Oh, wait... he'd fall over if someone even ran close to him.
Different skill sets, bud. NFL players are built for power and quick speed, soccer players are built for stamina. You take either out of their element, and they'll falter.
Guns are not a first resort. But if civil unrest doesn't work, and the government starts sending in troops to put down the resistance, what do you do? Just roll over? Civil unrest only works if the government is afraid of it's citizens. And it's only afraid of the citizens if they have the opportunity to overthrow it.
If you use a picture of Godzilla on your product "Cabzilla", then you most definitely are attempting to use the well-known trademark of Godzilla in your marketing. A specific work is copyright... the character is trademark. It actually works out quite well, because it allows you to make future works that are definitely yours without confusion in the market.
Of course Colonels and Generals don't want robotic combatants. They wouldn't be able to sit behind their desk and periodically come out to decorate a fallen soldier that way, and they might actually have to do more than fall back on patriotism as a rallying cry for more wars.
I'm all about a death of 1000 cuts. But maybe I'm biased ;)
Better not thing any doubleplus ungood thoughts, or have a friend that's Muslim.

I agree.
The problem isn't what Microsoft is researching... it's what they do with the products after research and it moves into production.

Also in DD-WRT and the default Linksys firmware, I believe.
Tell that to my scanner. It won't work on XP or anything later, still works great under Linux.
You're at the whims of your device manufacturer staying in business and porting drivers forward when you use Windows.

Yeah, but Greenpeace doesn't do anything bad itself other than news stunts. They just fund others to do it.
Milk, the cows are killing the environment. They take up too many resources, and belch and fart methane into the air. Milk is worse than eating 15 entire heads of lettuce.
That said, I'm gonna go grill me a steak.
It may be the best solution AT THE TIME. But it is never the best solution overall. If it was, then we wouldn't be complaining about Microsoft.
Problem is, the DRM doesn't work. They just don't even know enough to know what's wrong, and the store won't let them return the defective damn game. So they blame Windows, or that game, but they'll still buy another game from the same published.

Hi! It looks like you're unfamiliar with a dictionary. Do you want some help with that? </clippy>

And you don't have that choice if you don't have a gun.
