Those "high priests" also tend to know a hell of a lot more about kernels in general and the Linux kernel specifically than a random layperson, or even a highly experienced coder. It would do you good to learn from them. Perhaps instead of bull-doggedly trying to push your patch, perhaps you should figure out what they specifically objected to (they don't randomly object to all patches, as the kernel does keep being developed and having patches applied), figure out why, and fix it. Either by explaining to them (with evidence!) why they are wrong, and you better be DAMN sure you're right, or more likely by fixing the problems with you patch. Do you expect the engineers at Ferrari to take your suggestion on what cam to put in their engine, even if you're a fast car enthusiast? Why would you think the Linux kernel keepers are any less elite in their skills and knowledge?

Not very efficient my ass. Just put another resistor on the board, and change the power output relative to it's value. Minimal cost, hardware lock that'd require soldering to fix, rather than just code. That should indemnify the hardware manufacturer from any wrongdoing, and still allow open drivers.

And I'm not even an engineer. If I can figure that out, then I guarantee you someone else can. It's all about corporate paranoia. Lots of businesses have all kinds of things they lock down for no good reason except for paranoia.

Your watch, calculator, and Gameboy (if it's a first-generation Gameboy Advance or earlier) have what's known as a reflective LCD, or they block out reflected light. You can't read your watch or use your calculator in the dark, can you? They take ambient light around them, and block portions of it that would otherwise be reflected to make a display. There are also transflective displays, which work better in bright ambient light.

I personally find that kind of approach MUCH more palatable than a "Punch the monkey!" flash ad, and even nice, because I learn something, and know that whoever is selling me that kind of stuff really cares about their product. You can't become extremely knowledgeable about something without caring about it somewhat.

That being said, I've had multiple HD resolution videos running on my Linux laptop and desktop, flawlessly, on multiple Beryl cube sides.
