Why has the US become a nation of panty-wetting idiots?
Yes. It's a consequence of the way we've been brought up, protected from everything bad and even bad thoughts, so once something does actually enter our consciousness it consumes everything. Like someone who's lived in a bubble away from all germs all of a sudden meeting the common cold.
Except for the whole "Otis Elevators confirmed" it bit, I'd agree with you. But being as one of the largest companies that installs and services elevators says so, and you, a random slashdot commenter disagrees, I'm inclined to go with Otis.
A lot of engineers are some of the silliest people about the weirdest shit. My theory is it comes from many of them having a lot of theoretical knowledge with very little practical knowledge. The engineer with practical knowledge doesn't bug you because he's already solved the damn problem;)
It's usually right that you turn off of a red light, being the US and us driving on the right and all. And it's only certain big cities... it's perfectly legal to turn right on red in Minneapolis and Denver, as well as many other places. That said, the pedestrian always has right of way during those times. I actually don't mind walking around most big cities in the US... it's not that hard to pay attention to your surroundings and make sure the big metal boxes don't hit you.
...you don't seem to get it. You are what's wrong with people today.
You are not supposed to control your kids. You are supposed to teach them how to be adults and do things without you. If they do something you disapprove of, they need consequences. Such as having the game taken away and losing the money they spent on it.
Why should my 15 year old that is old enough to make his own decisions suffer because your kid is a moron? That's not how freedom works. That's not how America works. If you want to be protected from everything, move to England.
They have a chance. But it's not by treating their customers like criminals. I like going to the local theater that has nice tables and serves beer and food and such. Even with my full surround sound 61" home theater setup, it's nice to go out.
Do you see those little black bulbs on the ceiling that aren't terribly hidden? Everyone knows that they're cameras. It's common knowledge. An Infrared camera hidden in a theater is NOT common knowledge, and it's not apparent that it even exists. That's the difference.
Why not simply do a good job parenting and not try to protect your child from everything? Seriously. If you allow your child out of the house to buy things on their own, you have hopefully taught them some critical thinking skills and some morals and such. And now you want retailers to do your job too? Even if I want to allow my kid to buy those games if he wants to?
No. We need to remove most of the people from prisons. There are still some people that are simply a danger to others, no matter what the situation, and they are the ones that do need to be locked up. Unfortunately, they're only about 5-10% of the actual prison population (yes, numbers pulled out of my ass, but they're based on the number of non-violent drug offenders and others that are jailed). So we're simply generating more of them with the current prison system.
How hot are balls, though? Because testicles are usually cooler than the rest of the body. Pretty much the entire reason they're dangling out there away from the body instead of better protected.
I can't decide if your pun was intentional or not. Because some plants are already efficient sunlight->hydrocarbon conversion systems. But your "slashvertisement" comment makes me wonder if you meant that or not...
The problem is timescale and slow damage. If you burn all that coal, you're adding many millions of tons of currently carbon to the carbon cycle, leading to significant climatological issues in the near and long term future. On the other hand, if you get fuel from biological sources that originally sequestered their carbon from the air, you have closed the carbon loop, meaning things won't get worse than they already are.
Just because all costs aren't monetary or immediate doesn't mean they aren't very real. Humans need to learn to think further ahead than just the next quarter or even next year.
Slashdot is a site for those of the engineering mindeset. For comments like that, you'd have to be looking for one of the sites down the hall, stupidlypoliticallycorrectdot or technicallyincompetentdot
The difference is in how fast the energy is released. TNT explodes all at once. Gasoline burns. Getting 1lb of gasoline aerosolized enough that it would explode would be a pretty big volume of air+gasoline, and would be pretty easy to envision as highly explosive.
The GPL gives you rights you don't have otherwise. It's not trying to take away rights you already have. That's what is meant by "permissive" vs. "restrictive".
And this latest one is actually stable again. They fixed a lot of the JVM issues they've had over the past few weeks, and the fixes finally trickled all the way down to the main nightly trunk builds.
And you use strategy and planning, and actually think. Versus simply clicking on what's flashing. There is a huge difference between "traditional" games and Farmville type stuff. The majority of "casual" games are made for people who don't like thinking and just want to... do repetitive things I guess.
Lots of people travel for work. Not a whole lot of desk space in airports.
But they can if they watch a 3D movie

Perhaps the placebo effect actually is working...

If you type > you can get a >
Sure there is. You're supposed to buy a Mac so it'll run better.
You just haven't entered fully into the reality distortion field, and the forces of being in the middle are a pain ;)

A single Blu-Ray disc can only hold ~50GB of data.

You need to grow up before you become a parent.

If someone in the same field would solve the same problem in a sufficiently similar way, it's obvious.
The magic words are "this will make it faster"
