Sounds more like it's time to get rid of HP. Try something from www.system76.com or www.powernotebooks.com. Intelligent, English speaking support that believes what you say, as well as quality hardware at a pretty good price. It's not a cheapo laptop like from Dell/HP/whatever, but it'll work better and last longer, and give you better value if you keep it for more than a year.
Or you could just have a machine that actually boots quickly that's defaulted to your most common selection, so you normally just go get your tea anyway when you flip the switch, and it's only a 10 second or so wait if you want the non-default? Do you NOT know how to set your bootup memory test to "Quick" instead of scanning every bit of 2GB of RAM?
Just a data point, I got a 14" notebook from Powernotebooks about 5 months ago, and run Linux almost exclusively on it (I play games at LAN parties and use the software from 3DNature in my sig... so sue me;)) The ONLY things I haven't gotten working natively on it are the webcam (support is in the works), and the TPM chip. I haven't tried the fingerprint reader, but it supposedly is supported. I've got the system running Ubuntu 6.10 with Beryl, all kinds of nifty effects, etc.
Anyway, I just wanted to throw in another plug for Powernotebooks. I don't work there or have any vested interests in the company, but I'm a very satisfied customer.
Try Ubuntu. The 7.04 beta supposedly makes it nice, but with 6.10, it's as simple as going to www.beryl-project.org and following the instructions. It's hit yourself in the head easy with NVIDIA hardware. Haven't tried ATI, but it's only slightly more difficult from what I hear.

And I worked for Chipotle, so I could pretty much eat for free whenever I wanted;) I have a lot of respect for the way Chipotle runs it's restaurants, having worked there both as a supervisor and a regular employee. There's a reason they keep their workers around and have a lot less churn than at other McDonald's type places.
That's why my girlfriend's company has profit-sharing and project-based bonuses set up, and ours is starting to do so in the 3rd quarter here (we're still a pretty small startup, growing pains and all). It's not an untenable situation, but it could easily be.

You can't be "productive" 100% of the time, because otherwise you wouldn't get anything done at all. Humans != machines. We're significantly smarter (well, at least some of us) and that price is paid by being less than perfectly efficient in some ways.
While there is imagination involved, there's no reason animals wouldn't be able to ask themselves "What did my mother do when X happened?" and make moral decisions on that basis.

Animals show remarkable instincts, but very little reasoning applied to unfamiliar situations, which would be the true test of memory and analysis versus pure instinct. Just because two deer both run from a cougar doesn't mean that they learned from one or the other. Chimpanzees, grey parrots, dolphins, and a few other species show rudimentary reasoning capabilities, but I think the GP's assertion is pretty obviously correct.
GameStop is your friend;) Used systems are available at pretty good prices. I buy over half of my games there, as well as a few systems. Tons of people don't buy games new and don't like them, or want money to get new ones so sell their great old ones (FF:TA, Sonic the Hedgehog, etc.). Usually kids who don't have any income stream.

You should try a DS. It's much wider than the SP, so it's more comfortable to play on. I've played FF:TA for hours without issue.
