    A monthly fee does wonders to keep the quality of the servers high (if you don't believe me, check out the free Battle.net servers for games like Diablo II).

    Though, I would think it would make sense to lower the price of the game some, as my guess is that they make most of their money from the monthly fees anyway.

    I see it as just a step in the right direction. It might be a bit much to make someone goes from Windows (with IE, MS Office, MSN Messsenger, etc.) to Linux (with Firefox, OpenOffice, Gaim, etc.). But if you can get them gradually switch to running Firefox, OpenOffice, Gaim, etc. on Windows, then it will be easier to for them to switch the underlying OS, once they are comfortable with the applications common to both OS'es.

    For your homework, I suggest that you compare the Prescott to the AMD64, and see which one runs hotter. The AMD is hotter business dates back to the Slot-A Athlons vs. the PIII.

    Gee thanks Apple. It may be OK on a CRT, but on my LCD, light text on a dark background is much more pleasant to use.

    Just ask everyone who has ever tried to do tech support over the phone how often they've had to say "Just click- no, the OTHER button..."

    So, with Macs, instead they have to say "Now click here while holding down somekey on the keyboard." Which doesn't seem any better to me.

    BTW, Ask them what happens when you drag things with the mouse - will they get moved or copied or what? What exactly in what situation? So, how many points scored? Do you still think that simple mouse (that they probably like to handle with two fingers and release before clicking) is a bad thing for _them_?

    The easiest thing I have found, and what I do most of the time since I can't remember all those combinations, is to right click and select the action from the menu that pops up. This seems pretty easy for most people to understand, when I'm explaining this to a computer newbie. As you can imagine though, this is pretty tough to do with a one button mouse.

    MacOS X is slow as molasses with 256 MB, and it's a shame that Apple still sells computers with that little memory.

    What really blows my mind that is that the amount of memory that all the iMacs (even the 20" model at $1900) and the PowerMacs upto and including the dual 1.8Ghz model is only 256MB. All but the cheapest, crappiest new PCs come with 512MB nowadays. Apple really needs to get with the program.

    I can understand the Mac Mini having 256MB, being an entry level computer and all. But what I don't get is why all the iMacs (including the 20" model), and the PowerMac's up to and including the dual 1.8Ghz model ship with 256MB standard. Apple really needs to move out of 2000 and into 2005.

    AGP came out when, about 1997? It's now 2005, and you can easily find new boards with AGP (I'd say the boards that don't include it are still a minority). I'd guess that it will take another year or longer for this to change.

    Has any memory technology stuck around that long? (I will admit that PC-100 and PC-133 are pretty close though).

    If I know my Pentium 4's right, the first one is a hyperthreading CPU, and the second one is not. Perhaps that is what is skewing your results so dramatically.

    Though, I must say, RDRAM is fast (typing this from a 1.5Ghz P4 with a gig).

    I just bought a computer with a gig of it for slightly over $200 used. I was expecting to find SDRAM, so imagine my surprise when I popped open the case.

    Atleast I have no plans to upgrade it. Plus it's fast.

    That reminds me of one of my favorite April fool's jokes from a while ago (back when keyboards like the Model M were common in offices). I would remove the numeric keypad keys and rearrange them from the "calculator" layout to the "phone" layout. The reactions were great, as the numbers wouldn't work right, and many people could not figure out why. Even when I told them what I did, some people would still insist that they had always been that way.

    Yeah, because four trips at 30MPG is WAY better than one at 20MPG... *BOGGLE*

    It all evens out, as 99% of the time when you aren't carrying anything other than yourself, you're still burning 20MPG.

    Hmm- $400 for crappy consumer software vs $5000 for absolutely-positively-top-of-the-line professional software. Methinks you've backed yourself into the wrong comparison.

    Have you actually used some of those $5000 programs? I'm not saying that all of them are terrible, but some of them - while still getting the job done, are full of bugs and have terrible interfaces. Not that I would xpect Microsoft to do any better.

    Windows 95 cost £39. Windows XP Pro costs £151.

    Windows 95 was Microsoft's home OS. The equilvent now is XP Home, which is cheaper than XP Pro. How much did NT cost in 1995?

    I just tried running the Windows 1.01 executable on Windows XP. Windows doesn't recoginize it as a valid program, and it doesn't run.

    Windows XP actually recognizes the version from Windows 2.03 as a valid executable for an ancient version of Windows, and presents a dialog box saying that it may or may not work right and asks if I want to run it anyway. If I tell it OK, it doesn't run though.

    Sadly, by Windows 3.11, it appears that Microsoft decided that Reversi was no longer an important feature, and no longer included it with Windows.

    In the article, they say the PS3 will have 4 Cells each running at 1.6v with 85W heat disipation!!! If that is true, they are not only going to need at least a 500W power supply (maybe significantly more), but also to get rid of 340W of heat! How is this going to fit under my TV?

    Oh yeah? Just wait until you see the XBox 2!

    Opera uses Ram to cache webpages, and on systems with a lot of memory Opera does like to go nuts (which is one of reasons why it's so fast). If you want to tame it down, just go into preferences and set the Memory Cache to a smaller setting.

    I really doubt that the difference is as large as a minute or two and an hour. Even when comparing my Athlon XP 2Ghz and my P4 1.5Ghz, the difference in speed is only about 15-20% in favor of the Athlon. Noticable, but not a big deal to me.

    If you remember your history, the Pentium-M is based off of the Pentium-III. You know, the same P3 that kicked the crap out of the P4 when it came out, despite the fact that the P3 was topping out around 1.0Ghz and the P4 started at 1.4Ghz.

    Unless you mean that the the Pentium M has no hyperthreading, which I suppose is a valid point, as hyperthreading is about all the P4 has going for it right now.
