They say in the FA that the fabric is "highly flexible and strong". But they only have samples roughly 10 microns large at this point, and the article doesn't really give any indication how well this will scale up. What I really want to know is if this stuff is airtight, or even watertight. If it is, I wonder if it would have any use in creating an ultralight spaceship?

My hoard of Napster 1.0 music files aren't going anywhere soon. Sure, they are redundant with other stuff I have downloaded, and many I haven't listened to in years. Besides, harddrive space is incredibly cheap, the whole collection is probably taking up less than $5.00 worth of disk drive.

Multi-desktops don't do a thing for me. What is the use of a graphical application running in a window I can't see? Multi-desktops with a useable preview window might be worthwhile, but the way it's done in KDE/Gnome right now is worthless.

For people that basically have every application always maximized, multiple desktops really don't do anything useful. It's most useful if you have several windows open at once. Say one desktop has IM - the client and several conversations. The next has several file system windows open so you can drag and drop files with ease. The next desktop might have several system monitoring tools open. So for instance, you can bring up all your monitoring windows with one click, instead of several clicks to bring up each individual window to the foreground. It's handy. But hardly nessecary.

Years ago, people did not "get" technologies like the computer. I mean, what good was an unreliable, hugely expensive machine that took up a rather large room? Who would want buy one, and for what purpose could they use it for? But look at where we are now, some 60 years after the first computer. Even if you can't think of any good that will come out of space exploration, just remember you do things everyday with computers that no one even imagined 50 years ago in their wildest dreams.

Depends on what kind of solar you are talking about. Most people think of the solar cells that are found on calculators - those are toxic and usually produce less energy than it takes to make them. Those articles are really only valid if you are stuck between buying an Apple and a Dell. And who wants a Dell?

When it comes to the high end, they may compare. Apple is certainly very competitive in laptops. But when it comes to what I can build myself out of components in the PC world vs. Apple, the Apples _are_ really expensive. The cheapest eMac runs about $800 - for that amount of money I can piece together a pretty nice PC system that's going to be far better than that eMac. Even better, that PC system is going to be exactly how I want it, unlike that eMac which would need a ram upgrade and a new mouse right away.

Just the other day, I was adding together what it would cost for a reasonable AMD64 based system. I think I ended up with a 3200+, Gigabyte motherboard, 1GB of Crucial memory, 250GB harddrive, and an ATI 9600 video card for about $1250 without the monitor. And that was with a nice case, CPU cooler, and an Antec power supply (I was trying to make it low noise too.) Apple simply doesn't anything like that for that price.
