OTOH, it's much nicer than saying "obscure, unknown or forgotten," which I think might also might fit. Frankly there's no requirement that the article author needs to be a science fiction fan at all. Don't get your panties in a bunch!
My understanding was always that this was a way for Scott to throw some money at W.S.Burroughs, who was in debt, and maintaining his heroin addiction. That is why the background story about Nourse and the relevance of the name in the film hasn't often been explored. Hollywood definitely wasn't going to finance a film titled "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" so just about anything would do and Burroughs was known for crazy-off-the-wall writing- that usually ends the exploration.
This is a little off-topic, but the bizarre, darkly creative nature of Burrough's writing is usually credited to hallucinations from withdrawals, or heroin itself. But not only did Burroughs did DMT-containing Yagé (better known now as ayahuasca) in the Amazon, but he continued to occasionally use the synthetic version cooked up back in the states, including some reportedly heroic doses (injecting hundreds of doses at once) To anyone familiar with this hallucinogen, it clearly inspires his nightmare visions. Heroin does nothing of the sort, and could even be described as anti-hallucinogenic. I haven't read this anywhere and it surprises me.
There's also a problem because of the history of DCE/RPC from the "Open Software Foundation" (Open Group) which predates OSS. Microsoft more or less did what you suggested they would with BSD'd code. http://www.samba-tng.org/docs/tng-arch/tng-arch05. html
Truth is stranger than fiction.
I think Windows- and particularly XP, has an advantage in installation, not really usability. You can make an argument against this now, put when XP came out, it had a far superior install and upgrading process, not to mention how it is preinstalled on so many PCs. Even with linux, I'd rather have something working out of the box and fix and customize things afterward. Besides, Linux IS easier to use than Windows (once it's installed correctly)
The Platypus will overtake the Penguin on the desktop. When Darwin OS really matures on x86, linux's shortcomings will become painfully obvious.
Linux is for people who hate Windows. People who love *nix use BSD.
I can use Aqua and have the old Mac OS desktop and also use X11 (thanks Fink!) at the same time. No contest.

Tai Chi is an excellent foundation for reproducing basic human movement! Although there are walking robots around, they tend to imitate specific legwork, as opposed to (humanoid?) total body movement. I imagine any martial art would do, but the rapid movements of most martial arts would add unnecessary complexity. For practical usage, I imagine using an insect model would be better than an odd upright primate, though. The question is will Disney sue over infringement on Animatronics copyrights?
About ten years ago a lot of therapists had people "remember" childhood sexual abuse (and Satanic abuse) by their parents. Now it is widely accepted by psychologists that complete repression of traumatic memory is very rare. Memory turns out to be very delicate and pliable. The research gets kinda scary when you realize that US law puts such an emphasis on eyewitness accounts.

Show off. I didn't get so much as a battery. I hope that people are sharing their new software/music on p2p networks! w00t!
Is there a moon that's orbit falls within a planetary ring? I assume a planet would have to be bigger by at least a statistically significant amount (average size+5%?) With present data and technology, would such an object even be detectable?
Dude, you can actually buy a player or burner that will fit Inside your case!
I got a tiny box with a mini-itx board with a DVD player from iDot Computers. Its half the size of the DVD player it replaces. I suppose I could use a wireless card with it, but why bother?
It makes much more sense to put audio components (along with audio software) in PCs. Unfortunately Joe Average hasn't figured this out yet, but hopefully that will change soon.
After appliances and gadgets are connected to the internet, why the next step is that they will do our thinking for us! Thank goodness, those pesky thoughts continue to annoy me, no matter how much TV I watch. Now big corporations will tell me exactly what to do all day everyday. We will all be free from the shackles of critical thought!

Ooops, I just read the "Vulture" article and apparently Burroughs was sober, "in Recovery," at the time. Everything else I said stands, however

Who exactly are 'music listeners?' everyone who answered 'yes' to "are you a music listener?" ???
