    Manufacturer reset is what you should have done. There usually is a little button behind a small hole in the back - press it with a paper clip, cycle the power, hold it till the LEDs go crazy and then you are back at the default settings, then go to the web site of the manufacturer and get a manual...

    China cannot afford paying for foreign technology patents on ridiculously simple ideas and therefore is going its own way. This is a one of the results of pressure by the WTO to comply with international IP treaties. They are a very large market, so why not? Isolation is not an issue to them - it is an issue to everybody else. I think it makes very good sense.

    No, most people like having all that crap on their PCs. They only call for help once the PCs are completely FUBAR and fixing it then is no mean feat. Usually, I have to remove the disk drive and read their data with Linux, then write it to CDROMs and finally re-install the whole bloody PC and put he data back - about 8 hours of work. So, no, you can't make money only from removing spyware.

    Well, yes, absolutely, you don't have to do *anything* to get spyware with IE. MS is so nice as to include Alexa with it for free. The result is that everybloody time I update IE, I have to run Adaware to remove Alexa - thanks Microsoft!

    Bleh - Reverse engineering interfaces for the purpose of compatibility is perfectly legal. It is specifically addressed in the US DMCA for instance and also in the EU equivalent legislation.
