Yes they did. There was something in the preview blurb about Zim getting paranoid after seeing the FBI warning on a videotape.
Guess what adult network execs? Kids know the difference between cartoons and reality.
I also noticed lots of other self censorship on the movie channels. You'll never see Fight Club air on TV ever again. Deterrence, a movie about a U.S.-Iraqi conflict (where Bagdad gets nuked at the end) was pulled as was Showtime's version of On the Beach.
All of this is just cover your ass Hollywood hypocrisy at it's finest. I'm sure next summer's movie lineup will include the usual number of explosions, because that's what sells and money is what it's all about.
This company wants to convert A-10s into fire bombers. Makes sense to me since they have a large payload capacity, excellent low level maneuverability and can fly at relatively slow speeds.
Bingo. I've noticed a lot of hardcore FPS gamers I know care more about "I can play game x at framerate y with z ping" than they do about actually playing the game! Of course, you know what they say about guys who brag about how much RAM their video card has. . .
I think the problem is that ornithopters would be very difficult to CGI and have them look realistic . The Harkonnen flyers at the end looked like they might could have pulled it off with those long wings though.
No doubt. I knew there was going to be a lot of fanboy type whining before I even started reading the comments (even though some of the posters can't even spell the names of the characters correctly).
Me? I enjoyed it quite a bit. I wish they had stuck a bit closer the the dialogue of the book and had used some of the internal monologues, but that's a minor complaint. The effects were very cool, the acting was decent. I felt like a real world had been created, which is rare in TV and movie science fiction these days.
Let's face it, if I said some things that I've seen in flames about a public figure in a real world public forum, I'd likely to sued for libel. Also, I can't incite people to riot, yell "fire" in a crowded movie house, etc. If I called someone a racial epithet to their face, I might get punched (and deservedly so). In the real world, you have to be responsible for your deeds and words. Online, you do not. That's OK, but if people were more responsible and reasonable online, it would be a more enlightened place for everyone.
I'm not saying that you have to agree with everyone.
I'm not saying that you shouldn't point out fallacious statements.
I am saying that if we put aside petty bickering and abusive behavior we can accomplish much more than we are doing right now. So before you send that nasty flame, calm down, think about it a bit more and decide whether it is really warranted or not!
I can still use USENET for one simple reason: killfiles. If someone annoys me *PLONK*, goodbye and th-th-th-thats all folks. I can't killfile people on Slashdot, therefore therefore I spend more time looking for the signal in all of the noise. Moderation doesn't necessarily solve this problem. There are often more well thought out posts at a threshold of "1" than at "2", which defeats the point of moderation. If would be a wonderful thing if websites with message boards could come up with a killfile type system. Any programmers out there have any ideas?
I disagree entirely. Flaming face to face is completely different than hiding behind a false e-mail address or posting anonoymously. I would imaging that most people who have sent abusive flames wouldn't have the guts to say it face to face in "the real world", as you put it.
If you come across as a ranting idiot who can't control his emotions in a public forum, you will probably be identified as such permanently.
BTW, "You should get out more" has to be one of the all time lamest flames that get sent regularly. Ranks right up there with "get a life"!
The reason that flamers like yourself absolutely baffle me is, why would you waste your valuable time on all this in the first place? Considering the length of your post, you spent quite a bit of time on all this. Life is short, my friend. If you get some sort of kick by wasting one precious second of your life on this nonsense, I feel sorry for you.
"You've gotten your wish. I will be ignoring your worthless columns from this point forward."
Had you done this in the first place you could have used your time for something more fun or constructive.
Of course, I expect ALL of this to go right over your head. I guess you've only got your rage to keep you company. . .
Would you drive on a highway where people could drive down the wrong side of the road at 100 mph? I think not. Spam has the same effect; it makes the whole system unworkable. Certainly a Usenet death penalty should not be invoked unless the circumstances are extreme. This would seem to be the case with @Home.
Personally, think that spammers should be covered with honey, doused with flesh eating bugs and left out in the desert to fry. Now that's extreme! A UDP is not.
You get the idea. If you you are so upset by the fact that Rob hasn't released the code why don't you stop reading Slashdot? I know, it is a crazy idea, but it just might work!!!!
I think the problem is that a lot of Slashdotters like to bitch and moan about just about everything. This is true about Slashdot comments on most subjects, not just this one.
One question, if the code is released, how many Slashdotters whiners are actually going to DO something with it? I would guess not one out of one hundred.
I'm sure that Rob and company are extremely busy just dealing with the day to day crap of running this website. I'm sure they will get around to releasing the code when they have the chance.
Quit whining. You get Slashdot for free, what more do you want?
That is all fine and dandy, but you seem to be missing the point. People need to be much more dispassionate about moderation, pro-linux posts are not necessarily good and pro-microsoft posts are not neccesarily evil. Each should be judged on its own merit, not on someone's political agenda.
Of course, the last sentence of your post speaks for itself and proves my point!
You seem to have forgotten the one thing that Intel (and Microsoft) are better at than anyone. Marketing. Sure, you and I know that AMD gives you more bang for the buck than Intel, problem is, the average consumer doesn't.
Most people I know have never even heard of AMD, but most of them know about Intel from their marketing blitzes. Sad but true.
Anyone remember the Simpsons halloween episode where Kang and Kodos, the slobbering space aliens, disguised themselves as Bill Clinton and Bob Dole so that they could take over the world?
The debate:
Kang as Dole:
Abortions for all. [crowd boos] Very well, no abortions for anyone. [crowd boos] Hmm... Abortions for some, miniature American flags for others. [crowd cheers and waves miniature flags]
Kodos as Clinton:
My fellow Americans. As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball, but tonight I say, we must move forward, not backward, upward not forward, and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom.
I think this sums up the US presidential elections quite well. Most people don't know jack about the issues and the media is only interested in sound bites. An uninformed electorate is an worthless electorate. We get the "leaders" that we deserve.
So in 2000, please vote Kang or Kodos, it doesn't matter, either way your planet is DOOMED!!!!
I enjoy Katz's articles too, not because they are necessarily good or particularly insightful, but because he is a genius at annoying self rightous slashdot readers.
I'd like to believe that this is true but I kind of doubt it. The "dot.com" market is laughably oversaturated. There is only so much money to go around and everyone is jumping on the e-commerce bandwagon.
I'm glad people boycotted them. I would do so myself, but I'm not in the market for toys. To be honest, I'd never heard of "etoy" before all of these rediculous domain name lawsuits got started. My guess is that most people know next to nothing about this story.
Most of these companies will go out of buisness eventually. None that I know of has shown the slightest ability to turn a profit. Let's hope the internet stock bubble bursts soon and then we will be rid of most of these greedhead e-commerce sites trying to cash in for a quick buck. The economic boom won't last forever. That is guaranteed.
"Don't give the trolls the credit they crave, you'll only encourage stupidity. Using one's emotions, accepting their existence, does not have to make morons out of us. I've seen some very effective flames come out of people who could accept both intelligence and emotion at the same time. Anger can put the flame behind the words, but reason MUST choose the words, or you wind up being incoherant and looking stupid. "
I agree 100% with this. If you resort to flame out of sheer emotion you will only look like a fool. I should know, I've sent stupid flames many times and I have almost always regreted it. E-mail makes foolish flaming too easy. Give yourself some time to think about what you are saying and how you say it before hitting the send key. Don't react out of anger, react out of reason. If we all think about what we are saying before saying it, we can accomplish so much more than if we resort to petty insults.
We are all too focused on the "whizbang" aspects of new technology and of course, the potential to make obscene amounts of money. What no one seems to notice that there are social implications, often bad ones. The mainstream public is completely uneducated on these issues since they get there news from the mainstream media, which is completely clueless.
Folks, this is not a good thing. Technology is not going to solve our basic problems. It is not going to make us all rich. It is no substitute for real life interaction and experience.
I'm so burned out on the hype, that technology has started to bore me. It might be more fun to trash my TV and computer and go live in a log cabin in the middle of the woods. That would be REAL living , much better than an "e-whatever" simulation.
"Again we come back to the question, "Who's buying this shit?" The only possible answer is: we are. I agree with Katz, it sucks, and I've spent years kicking and screaming and complaining about it and finally come to one realization: "We (for the most part) *want* to be dumbed down." It's like the end of 1984, we love big brother, as much as we'd like to deny it. Why else would so many people watch shows like Jerry Springer and Friends? Why do so many people so desperately look for any way possible to avoid the horrific burden of thinking for themselves?"
Well said. Instead of demonizing corporations, we should be looking a little bit more at ourselves, especially our needs vs. our wants. Why do people behave in the manner you mention?
It is expected and indoctrinated into us from a very young age.
Everyone else is doing it (social conformity) ant the fact that if you don't go along with the conformist masses you will be punished for it in some manner.
Fear, apathy and laziness.
Lets face it, most of us who bitch about corporations are complete hypocrites. We buy all of the crap that they're producing. I'm trying to overcome it. I don't need all of the consumer junk that I thought I did and now I have a lot more time for other interests and a lot less stuff to worry about.

The best show you've never seen has also been shitcanned due to abysmal ratings.
Unlike The Simpsons, it was actually funny.
Bingo. I've noticed a lot of hardcore FPS gamers I know care more about "I can play game x at framerate y with z ping" than they do about actually playing the game! Of course, you know what they say about guys who brag about how much RAM their video card has. . .

I'm looking forward to parts two and three.
I think this article might sum things up better than Katz, without the political overtones.
Those who don't have respect for themselves will never respect the rights of others.
Something to consider.

_x_ Thank you for wasting my bandwidth.
I'd rather get a real flame than a form flame. At least then I know someone has put some thought into it.
The reason that flamers like yourself absolutely baffle me is, why would you waste your valuable time on all this in the first place? Bad analogy.
Would you drive on a highway where people could drive down the wrong side of the road at 100 mph? I think not. Spam has the same effect; it makes the whole system unworkable. Blah, blah, blah.
Whine, whine, whine.
Bitch, bitch, bitch.
Yadda, yadda, yadda.

Yes, You are correct and I've heard all this before.
No, I don't particularly care.
Dating systems are completely arbitrary. Only because of the Judeo-Christian tradition are we hitting a year with three zeros this time.
The reason for all the "millenium hype" is that most people are too stupid to handle anything other than nice round numbers.
I'll be glad when its over because I'm sick to death of hearing about it.
Time be time, man!!!
