    putting itself in a ADS (NTFS alternate data stream) which isn't seen by normal file system enumeration tools, but even blocks ADS aware tools from seeing the stream.

    How is it even found to be loaded in the first place?

    Works in Vista, too!

    Maybe Vista needs that new file system after all. Too many places to hide stuff in the current NTFS. FAT32 anyone?

    With Vista coming out soon, many new applications written will only run on Vista because of the new architecture, driver model, etc.

    That seems like a really careless statement on your part. Are you saying that virtually all new applications are being written for an OS that you can't even buy for 6 more months? Boy that's sure going to put a dent in the next 2 quarters earning statements for every major software company.

    Oh, and btw, are they writing for 32-bit Vista, or 64-bit Vista?

    Interesting. I would have assumed that I could install any number of Vista virtual machines for my use on my single computer -- especially since only one (or two on a dual core) could be considered to be running at the same time. Now Microsoft is telling me only 4. Sure sounds like I'm losing, not gaining, here -- those bastards!

    Imagine putting Halo 2 into your Xbox 360 only to have it automatically upgraded to look like Halo 3 in graphical quality.

    Sounds like getting something for nothing, which never seems to turn out in real life as well as the theory promises.

    Why this is an issue at all is because Sony simply isn't trusted any more by just about everybody! We don't believe what they say they'll do, that they'll keep any promises that don't have their feet held to the fire, or that they won't try to screw us out of every list dime (pence, lira, yen, won...) in our pockets. That's why this is an issue despite any and everything Sony says to the contrary.

    This should serve as a method to reduce prices. It has got to bring them down in two different ways:

    1: Because more games will be sold due to the inability to share games with your friends, and the ending of the Used Game market, game manufacturers and sellers can reduce prices and still make the same profits. In addition, the lower prices will further increase sales as they induce people to try games they would not have purchased before due to the lower prices. The risk of a bad game experience is reduced when the price is lower.

    2: The prices should be reduced because the value of the game is now correspondingly less. Before a game had residual value after you were done with it. You could sell or trade it for a game you hadn't played yet. With this reduction in value of the new games, they should be priced less because you're getting less.

    Sure, yeah, right -- greedy bastards!

    Uh, how about your W98 machine is too old, too low powered, with too small a hard-drive, and even maxed out on memory not enough, to run WinXP? That's the real reason many people can't even consider jumping over 2 interim OS releases to XP.

    Today the mighty Microsoft has demonstrated more clearly than ever that they truly don't have a clue. They managed this feat by telling Windows 98 users who, are likely running 10 year old hardware, that the solution to remain secure is to upgrade those old machines to Windows XP. This fails for so many reasons it's not worth even trying to list them all here. If Microsoft was giving away Windows XP Professional for free to all these users, along with unlimited telephone technical support for installing and getting it running, it still would be no solution.

    And these are the people you've now going to believe on their promises about Vista?

    Beware the Intel T2300E processor - and Dell! Intel still sells processors both with and without their Virtualization Technology, and Dell has performed an absolute Bait & Switch (see link) with some of their notebooks. You need the right processor for this to run correctly -- Intel or AMD -- and you need a vendor you can trust!

    Yes, Dell, these things do make a difference!

    And how long before they'll be allowed to disable your fast forward, reverse skip, slow motion, and freeze frame buttons? Each of these affect the movie viewing in ways the director never intended as well. Is one really that different than another.

    Truth is, I expect every one of these restrictions to reduce overall DVD buying. At least the Clean DVD people were buying original DVD's to offset the cleaned-up copies they were selling.

    Interesting question, however, were the cleaned up DVD's properly CSS encoded and region locked? If so, how did they get a license to use that technology?

    I bought a motherboard from Newegg that came with some pretty hefty rebates. Filled out everything correctly and mailed them in. A few months went by ...Six months or so after the purchase date...

    As long as you're going to block money transfers anyway, why not block all transfers from the USA to Mexico? If illegal immigrants can't ship the money home they'll all leave. Or just put a 20% tax on the transfers to pay for the identity theft, services, and tax evasion that the illegals are practicing. This way they pay for their stay here, and become more welcome guests. Can't believe that our government that can't do anything else right either isn't doing this.

    once you do microsoft starts "updating them" with MS only extensions, making MS documents all but unreadable in other word processors,

    I'm sure there would be MSEODF (Microsoft Enhanced Open Document Format) files. They'd have to have them because there will be some FNOU (Feature No One Uses) that can't be saved in ODF. Then you'll have the option to save in either Standard ODF, or MSEODF if you want to preserve your usage of the FNOU. After that, the ODF spec will be on a constant treadmill to keep up with the MSEODF releases.
