I still have and use a ReplayTV 5040. It's been upgraded with a new hard drive, but other than that it's worked well enough. This model is one of the few that can automatically skip commercials when you play back a recorded show. It works reasonably well at the automatic skip as well. But it's the shame that they had to drop this feature in their most recent line-up of DVR's. Apparently the broadcaster's still want to get paid for commercials even after they air a show. I also enjoy the internet show sharing features that Poopli has graciously provided. All-in-all this was a great product.

True that ReplayTV has left the set-top DVR market and went for a PC based software market. I'm not sure how that's working for them. But as customer of theirs, I wish them luck.

  11. Next Gen HD media wars: Clear winner? on Blockbuster Chooses Blu-ray · · Score: 1

I'd venture a guess and say that it is too soon to write HD DVD off as well. Blu Ray got off to a good start with the bundle of PS3 owners. And I suspect their curiosity has something to do with the 7 to 4 sales ratios. But PS3 sales have slowed. HD DVD player's sales figures for the stand-alone machines has risen since May's price drop. The Xbox 360's figures aren't factored in to the report that I had read, but that unknown must account for a hundred thousand perhaps. I'd think that Blockbuster would do well to re-evaluate that policy in a few months as the market swings to pick up the new HD DVD owners.

Eventually a clear winner will be had, but I'd guess that we won't know who it is until this holiday season. And it would probably be charted in player sales figures of millions over the next guy. And not just the few hundred thousand that the current spread is.

Any way, I do think the first person was right - someone must be getting a nice kick-back for the exclusive stocking of Blu-Ray discs at Blockbuster. Because it's way to early to tell who is winning. Come on HD DVD guys, you have to be more competitive to catch those dollar bills!

It is not to stifle competition or to eliminate similar works of creation through competition. But if Free / Open Source Software is not competing on economic scales then do these works even violate these patents? I believe that since there is no monetary value attached to the FOSS applications then they do not violate these patents in any way shape or form. Once you ask for money for this software, then the patent violations should be considered. Distributions often sell the pre-packaging of a products but not the actual applications per se. They also sell support or updates, I'm not aware of many distro's which are selling their distribution as a closed and individual work of creation. (Such as Apple OS X.)

It should also be determined if these patents are so broad in description that they are invalid to begin with.

The fundalmental flaw in your position is that HDMI is equivalent to HDTV. Only the latest HDTVs have HDMI. I guess you have missed the other posts on Slashdot of early adopters of HDTV lamenting the fact that their TV's do NOT have HDMI connectors. If the objective is to connect to as many HDTV presently out in homes the cable that maximizes that is component, not HDMI.

In two or three years it would be a dumb idea not to include the cable (at that point the number of HDMI tvs should far outnumber the number of HDTV without it). However, for this initial distribution run, there is isn't motivation.

I think taht the general public's conception of Sony's PlayStation 3 in respect to the function of the HDMI port is that it is an integral and necessary component of the Sony Blu-Ray DRM for video playback. Without the cable the video quality is nerfed or, possibly for some titles, playback will be altogether disabled. Whether or not this cable is required to play a BD-Rom game titles is unknown by me. But one might assume that Sony wants to protect the games from being copied and will require this function for Game Titles as well.

As to the inclusion of a cable: This would be nice. It would also be nice to package a title with the game system and a controller for your co-gamer. But systems have come stripped of these pleasantries of lately. To the point where you can't even buy a system and save the same unless you first buy flash RAM. More recent console game systems have become very consumer hostile. Which appears to be a trend that even the most expensive $600 game system will follow.

I traditionally look at a major local electronics store weekend sales ads each friday, and I've watched HD "Capable" TV's creep down from the low 5 digit price to a low 4 digit price. But I'm still not ready to finance a television set! I'm very happy with my 3 year old 50" RP TV and 200+ DVD titles. I can see many more years use from it allowing me to wait until the price point breaks to "affordable." (Meaning that I do not have to finance the TV set to own it!) Or around $500 - $300 for a similar sized and quality set. In fact, I can see a disk array / media server as my next purchase way before I ever decide on which of these two formats I'll adopt. At this point, none of the above will like be my option if nothing changes.

Neither HD nor BD has that "coolness" factor worthy of adoption. Instead give me a lossless high-def downloadable video that I can put on a media server. One that allows me to shift to DVD format for backwards compatibility or allows me to play it on my phone, PDA, or some other ridiculous location that I pick. I'm just not interested in a disc which may be hyper-sensitive to scratches and contain more restrictions than iTunes.
