wow, is someone a little bitter with (more than) a little misdirected anger. I don't think that I should be wasting my tax dollars on your anger management class. It obviously isn't working out.
I hate those people (like the parent to this post)who are always on the outside looking in. They are the ones that always have an opinion and a loud voice and they think that it matters. If you think that all of your tax money that goes to universities is being spent on some 18 year olds mp3 habit, then you need to look at the financial plans of universities. You will probably find that your subsidized mp3 money is just a drop in the bucket of the university's anual budget. If that is the biggest issue that you have and this is the best case that you have against money being spent on universities then you need to look again.
I have moderations points, but I felt that it would be more effective to reply to this than to simply mark it down like most moderators would do. I disagree with you 100%. Your approach sucks, and your language is deplorable at best. If you have a point to make - then articulate it. Telling someone to go fsck themselves because you disagree with them is about as mature as saying "Im rubber you're glue...." I encourage you to try again and reply to this post in a mature and vocal manner.
Im going to play the "victim of circumstance" card on this issue:
Also, I am not directly replying to the post above, I just think that my comments fit somewhere in this thread and this spot looks as good as any. While I agree with both sides' arguments in the "stealing vs big industry" argument, I for one download MP3s because I cannot hear the music that I like on the radio. I live in Las Vegas where the commercial radio market consists of Classic Rock, Hard Rock / Metal, top 40 or stuff that my parents listen to. Of these choices none appeal to me.
I listen to trance/house/D&B and there is one station here in town that plays it. It is the college station. It plays it on Fridays from 10 until sometime early in the mornings. I am not going to comprimise my weekend festivities of drinking and raving simply to hear the music that I enjoy. It is not convenient for me. So I go to sites where I know that they have DJs that I enjoy listening to. When that DJ plays a mix that I like, I search for their MP3s (if they have any). When I listen to their MP3s and I like what I hear I go buy the CD. If their music is not that great I may burn it to a CD so I can determine if I like it after a few more listens. If it sux, then I usually get rid of said burned CD. If I like it then I go to my local record store and support that artist.
MP3s have become my substitute for comercial radio. I am not able to stomach much of what is played on commercial radio so I don't listen to it. I rely mostly on MP3s and recommendations from people who listen to the same type of music that I do. I dont' consider myself immoral for supporting artists that I like, and not giving my money to artists that I don't like.
ESR has said that we all vote daily, with our money. I consider downloading MP3s my way of becoming an informed voter. I vote for those that I like because I know that I like them. It is just simple common sense.
If you find an artist that you enjoy but don't have any desire to buy their CD, write them a letter. Most musicians that care are more delighted to hear how their music has touched a fan, not that they are the most prophitable band in history (yes this is a generalization, but it is not false - I know from experience). --------------------------------------------
I really wish that you hadn't posted anonymously because I would LOVE to give you some of my karma points for that. I am kind of stingy with my karma points (I guess) in that I have never moderated a post down, but when I find a post that really makes me think about something in a light that I hadn't seen before, that is usually where I put my karma. I hate mimes. I went to the park one day and this mime came towards me on some stupid imaginary skateboard. I was not impressed, so I punched him and stole his wallet. ----------------------------------------- ---
I understand that, too. But I feel that this is a decision every person makes for themselves. And you can try your hardest to show people your way of thinking, and convince them that you're way is the right way to go. But I strongly disagree that you can take what someone else has done, and disregard how -they- feel about -their- work because of how -you- feel about -your- work. That's all I was trying to say.
The irony of this partial thread is the fact that these industry people are telling us that their way is the right way. Meanwhile, the people who take a stance on open standards are saying that there is no right way. But in order for us to show that there is no right way to do things, we have to establish the fact that the right way is that there is no right way. It is hard to show people how to get IT when they have blinders on and don't want to see that there really is no right way. The path of least resistance is often the one where you relinquish control. The MPAA does not wish to relinquish control of their cash cow, and we as an open standards supporters feel that by opening their stnadards they will still maintain the ability make money off of their industry, and also have a product that fills the void that they have created. ---------------------------------------- ----
Wow, that is the first time I have seen the word "meme" on Slashdot, and personally I am shocked that I havn't seen it here sooner. I read it in a book called "Beyond Civilization" by Daniel Quinn. Mr Quinn borrowed that term from another author (the person's name escapes me at this time), and it is quite the perfect term for what is being described here.
I am going to give it my attempt to form a definition of the term for those of you who don't know what a meme is (sounds like theme )
meme: a cultural gene. A trait that gets passed from generation to generation much like traditional genetics. A meme is an idea, not a trait that we are born with, the only way to change a meme is to change people's minds.
This is a loose definition, please feel free to expand on it if you feel that my definition is inadequate. ------------------------------------- -------
Since we're on the religion thread, I think that I'll throw in my 2 cents here
Chrisitans, Jews, Bhuddists, Muslims etc... most religions actually have similar beliefs. It is the people who look at what is different in others that start wars, when in reality they all actually believe the same thing. Look at the basic premise of religions in general (key word here....general): there is some sort of higher power that governs. Its as simple as that. It is the belief in what governs you and your life that seperates you. Some believe that it is a god, or many gods, or an animal, or the sun. It is this "different is bad" mentality that causes so much greif in the religion holy war (no pun intended). By naming ANY specific religion, you are alienating all of the others.
It was this mentality that drove me to give up faith in any religion, each thinks that theirs is better because it believes in the same thing in a different way. It is like saying that my way to the church is better because it is faster...the fastest route may be better to some and to others they like to take the long route. You all still get there, just in different ways.
My point in all this rambling is that arguing over religion is a pointless matter that accomplishes nothing. Jewish and Christian belief is NOT that different.
Personally, I am an animist (a believer in life). It makes sense to me, but there is no wrong way to live here in my life. --------------------------------------------

It has an incredible parallel to the internet and similarily the inner workings of a computer. You become AWARE of what is around you in a completely different way. You become connected. For those who say that drugs are "bad" (m'kay) all I can say is that the only way to know is to experience them for yourself. I hear people say that one OS is better than the other all the time, but when I ask if they have used said-crappy-OS, the usual reply is "no."
It is one thing to say that drugs are bad because you have experienced some sort of negative effect from them, but to say that drugs are bad because that is what you learned in DARE class is simply a blind statement.
I am not trying to advocate a message of "drugs for everyone," but unless you have actually experienced them first hand, you really have no say in the matter and should really keep quiet about it.
Most people that I talk to who have tried E have found it to be a very relaxing and revealing experience. It may not have been some sort of life-changing experience, but it showed them (for about 6 hours) that the world as they see it is in fact only part of what is truly out there.

I also remember writing programs like lemonade stand and such from those BASIC programming books. I think that I was too young to understand the code ( I was in 1st or 2nd grade), but I had fun typing it in and trying to run it.
Ahhh, the good ole days, thanks Slashdot for the memories.

ok, so I am replying to my own thread again, so sue me.
I just want to remark/bitch about the moderating that goes on here at slashdot. I had one of the first 10 posts to this article (and actually it is one of the first threads to actually make a joke about the issue when you take out all of the trolls and first posts) and it is marked redundant.
I just want to thank the moderators who don't bother to be responsible and think before they moderate. I wouldn't be upset if my comment had been marked overrated, but redundant....that is just stupidity on the moderators part.
As to the idiot who marked it flame bait, I think that I already established that in the post.
