    Every so often I come into the market for a car.
    I know how much I have to spend, and look around.

    I might not be impulse buying, but if I hadn't read about BMW in the news I wouldn't have thought to go onto their site and see the cars on offer.

    Do not underestimate the power of the media.

    People buy expensive cars everyday, is it really so far against the grain to consider that maybe for the last few days more have gone to BMW?

    I wonder if its all a big marketting ploy.
    I mean - how many people have gone onto google and searched for BMW recently?

    More eyes means more potential customers, and I would gather at least some of those passing visitors purchased a vehicle.

    When I used to work in the local college, the web proxy was periodically updated with dodgy domains.
    One time, the admin ran the update and for the next couple of hours practically all sites were down.

    It took them a while to realise that blocking all domains with *.c* in them wasn't the best approach.

    I am 100% in the opinion that the majority of DDOS attacks are spread through the media.

    Its not a malicious action, but the news sites all spread word that foo.com is currently under attack, and the most obvious reader response is to click the link and try it for themselves.

    "click. Oh look, google is still down what am I going to do? click click click, nope its still down."

    IM.You: "Hey joe, have you heard that google.com is under attack?"
    IM.Joe: "Click. Yer its down over here"

    When moving away from home you encounter a hell of a lot of new experiences and theres so much to learn and take in.

    For instance, embedding the location of the pub and distance to the nearest kebab shop are key.

    Students who cannot manage this feat rarely last a week, you see them cold hungry and sober in lectures wishing they were back at home.

    Of course your brain matures when you leave home though, you do have to adapt, because you just couldn't survive if you let your mummy do everything.

    They also have a nice graph showing the links to the development stages and what aims and benefits it gets.
    Strangely absent are steps II and III. One of them has to be Military, any guesses on the other one?

    I'm sure our anticipation of that will be similar to how movie buffs react to news.

    Its taken 18 years to a get a sequel for Indiana Jones.

    There is nothing wrong with telling people how to fuck up their computers as well.

    There is however something wrong if you use these tools to automatically fuck up other peoples computers.

    I wondered this as well.

    Technically, shouldn't anything which doesn't emit light come under the banner Dark Matter?

    The Earth and Moon don't naturally emit light so would be difficult if impossible to see with a telescope.
    All of the asteriods and other rocky debris in our solar system is dark.

    All of this is moving at a lot more than a few centimeters a year.

    There can't be that much large fragments in the blackness of space because they would block our own view of the stars and lots more would appear to twinkle than currently are seen to? (negate atmosphere by using hubble)

    Lets run through your scenario.
    Your driving down the motorway/freeway minding your own business, driving carefully at around the speedlimit and some speed freak comes tearing past and undertakes you.

    You take out your Tag rifle and aim it at the car in front.

    Lean out of the window and take aim, but whilst you are doing this you swerve and take out 3 cyclists also minding their own business.

    Keeping up with a car in a highly visible chase scenario might be the most dangerous way to handle a criminal with a deadly weapon.
    Better to let them think he has outstarted the police and hopefully back off a little bit.
    High tensions and a rush hour road or pedestrian town centre don't generally mix.
