Remember, Einstein was a "mere" patent clerk. There have at least at some point in history been some brains in the patent office. My bet is there are still lots there. I would love to have a similar job - vetting other peoples ideas, however it would be better if the patent office actually got inloved and brought together like minded inventors and introduced them to each other, we might advance our civilisation by doing this.
Average joe won't even purchase Windows XP at retail.
The greatest majority will obtain it via a new computer. I'm not going to knock MS on this one. If they get it right, then its a great deal better for US. We get to spend more time relaxing because joe won't be calling us every five minutes.
I would hazard that you mean $200 after accounting for the laptop. You might get lucky and have one with a high enough spec lying around, but I doubt most people will.
Can you get replacements for them within a certain timespan?
With game companies, they usually offer some form of replacement procedure whereby returning the original cd and some fraction of the price you get a replacement. We had to do this with my missuses copy of Sims (cd was sat on by my eldest) I think it cost us about £10 but we got a shiney new cd.
Seems quite reasonable to me (thought I would still prefer to be able to make my own backup copy)
From the Sims site:
First, check to see if there are any scratches, fingerprints, or marks of any kind on the disk surface. Something even as small as a piece of hair or a very light scratch can cause this error. If you find any fingerprints or debris try cleaning the CD with a soft cotton cloth. If after cleaning the CD the error still occurs, or if there are still scratches you can send the CD in to be replaced. You can contact our warranty department at (650) 628-1900 to exchange your disk for a new one. To replace your software you will need a sales receipt dated within the 90-day warranty period. Electronic Arts warrants its software to the original purchaser that Electronic Arts' software is free from defects for a period of 90-days as stated in the manual. If the disk has been misused, or the 90-day warranty has passed, then a fee will be assessed to replace the software.
FEES:

Half life did something no other game has ever done before. It took my breath away.
Just the initial train ride and walk around mesa did it.
No other game had ever been that immersive - Doom and Wolf were just random shooters they felt more like top down Gauntlet did - shoot everything that came at you.
I'm not young either, I remember playing Driller on my ZX Spectrum (1st real fly around 'rendered' 3d game ever if I remember rightly - 97% in Crash) - that had the graphics, but gameplay let it down.
I would go for more online games if I could immerse myself easily. However, most enforce a tiny postage stamp sized area to play on and it completely wrecks the experience.
I realise I can just link directly to the flash and get it fullscreen, but for a quickish playtest its inconvenient.
Its a good way to handle the nitty gritty business needs (two techs in different companies liasing about some technical issue) without being slowed down by mail.
I know a great many issues that can be dealt with in under 5 minutes that because of mails and faxes and even phone calls (describing code modifications over the phone is not efficient) can take over a week to handle.
I would hazard the difference to be at the carrier.
All the talk of moving emails onto the carriers' network mean extra hardware for them (rather than just data transit)
RIM -> Carrier -> User
How would this affect roaming and multiple carriers, would a user connecting to a foreign carrier have to ping RIM who will have to check the mail on the carriers' system and upload the mail back to them?
If thats the case, I would imagine the carriers aren't going to be totally happy knowing that they are storing the emails for people who may not actually be on their network for extended periods.
I wouldn't be surprised if they have installed a little program on peoples machines to monitor and upload the stats about how much spyware a person has on their machine.

I think you mistranslated it,
It was there to protect us from Celine Dion.
I believe god owns the source code to our dna.
However, SCO might have something to say about that.
Errrrr I mean *Vista of course :$

You've never been in a casino before have you?
Also, by purchasing online, you can also as part of some DRM schemes burn a copy of the song you purchased to CD.
I never thought I would say this, but DRM is the winner here - might as well close all record stores.
*shudder*
Now we have the mini projector, I want a mini red stapler.
and you know what, when it arrives - its mine not yours.

Without a passphrase to decrypt the data theres not a great deal you can do with random bytes.
Amazing to see full shaded 3d produced on the humble spectrum (and look around some of its billions of individual window views!)
Crash magazine gave it 97% the highest rating ever, and it really pushed the boat out.
(I only just remembered about this talking about HL in a previous discussion)

Have some respect, thats your boss we are talking about!
Its no wonder so many are infected.
Us males can't stop licking pussy!
These aren't the parasites you are looking for.
Theres no point in travelling at close to light speed if your have no way of stopping.

Archaeologists today confirmed there are infact hieroglyphs pointing towards SCO ownership.
They read:
Bird

CamelShit

You are 100% right.
A patent should only be valid if there is a product or service utilising it.
I suppose they could just give a percentage of their profits :)
Since they won't see the subject name, they will just assume your a sick fuck and lock you away for years and years :P
