  1. Piracy Aids sales on Mod Chips Up, Game Industry Revenues Down? · · Score: 1

If it can be read it can be written They know this before they start up software companies, before they write the new software titles. If I only have $50 I can by one game. If I pirate 10 games have they lost out on $500, remember I only have $50. How many games are bought because the Pirate version is so good but broken (can't play online etc) 2000 titles to choose from. No way of testing. Only have $50. You do the math. Piracy is a pure marketing tool without the crap and hype. They don't like it because they can't control it. Pirates buy games .... they just buy the good ones with their $50.

  2. Before PC gaming there was Amiga..... on Is the Key to Linux a Games-Based Distro? · · Score: 1

Then in 1990 ONE game changed it all

"Austin, Texas, North America Chris Roberts creates a computer game called Wing Commander."

I ran a computer store. We sold Amigas 20 to 1 over PC's. The gaming computer was absolutely dominated by Amiga users .... games, hardware ... piracy .... all Amiga.

The Amiga had better graphics better sound hundreds more games, was cheaper ... you name it and Amiga was just better.

Then came Wing Commander. PC ONLY!

Over night we had our ratio of Amiga sales versus PC sales change. Many Many Amiga users (regulars to our stores) were selling up and buying PC's. Everyone had to play this game and they had no choice....PC only.

Prior to 1990 the PC was the Linux of today for games.

Release DOOM3 on Linux only and the whole world will change.

Considering every serious gamer I know is hanging out for Doom3 and Halflife 2 and they will blow serious wads of cash on new graphics and processors after they are released it is not unrealistic to imagine.

    I was an Amiga zealot

I changed my gaming rig from Amiga to PC in 1990. If a mega game like Doom3 was linux only ........

    foramt c: ....... linux expert

  3. Boot times kills switching distros on Is the Key to Linux a Games-Based Distro? · · Score: 1

The real pain with multiple distro's on the one PC and for that matter bootable CD's is the startup time. It's such a pain to reboot and wait..... If only M$ would make shutting down and rebooting faster then switching distros wouldn't be a pain anymore.....if only M$ would do this for us we could switch all the time ..... (hold on...light goes on!)

So your saying we've all known about this since the beginning of the year but we ALL waited until the last few weeks to start bitchin about it? We check EOL for all products we supply and none of our team picked this up until recently thanks to /. If your right then we missed it, a first, and everyone else did as well judging by the recent /. bitchin that prior November we havent seen.

  7. Moving to SUSE on Redhat Reports 90% Return Subscription Rate · · Score: 2, Interesting

We have over 100 RHN servers that we maintain. We have been building RH processes and customising our own business distro for 5 years now. Once April rolls round bad news. So we have no choice but to either upgrade(rebuild) to enterprise and fork out $1700NZ per server or change to a different distro. Giving only 4-5 months notice sucked. Downtime, risk and labour costs to our customers for no additional return. Customers and ourselves are not very happy with RH. If they let RH9 run its normal support life cycle and then did this it would have given us a reasonable period to change everyone over. Just waiting for our SUSE download to finish. Hope they don't get greedy as well.

  8. Good for Business ?? on Microsoft Identifies, Patches Another Critical RPC Hole · · Score: 1

We are a Linux based ISP in NZ who also supply support services for customers (who run many MS PC's)

After just finishing patching them all we need to start again.

As we also supply bandwidth to them...if the don't patch they are owned and blow there bandwidth cap.

So ... either way this is creating a huge revenue stream for us although the work sucks!!

I wonder if this cycle is the beginning of what is to be the Norm (like spam currently is).

I will need to employ more staff if it is....so good for business?? depends on which hat you are wearing I spose.

from a road. Not all from hills.

I have seen the plane in the Auckland museum, it also had many documented accounts to verify the claims. Definitely worth a visit.

Like the article says he never wanted to claim to be first. Doesn't alter the fact that he was.
