If it happends enough CC ocmanies will add it all togther and notify the companies/press about the breach.. and customers will find out that thier data has been posted on the internet for 4 months before they were notified:) Just the threat of that should make IT managers utilize atleast ROT13 style encryption:)
LOL... Well... considering You still need to add in numbers and puntcuation, ROT26 would be just as strong as ROT13.. Depending how its sent, ROT127 might be better:)
Well... Thats too easy to remedy... Just Rot13 Encrypt everything and your good to have a really insecure network that you don't have to tell anyone thats its in a constant state of being browsed and decoded... They should have set a minimum level of Encryption Its not so bad when all your info get stolen when its Securely encrypted with a secure key.. Then people should be notified if the key/mechanism to decrypt was obtained aswell.
I dunno about contactless CC's... How long is it untill someone walks around with a strong portable reader and grabs away all the CC info of people that walk near enough to it for them to be read... This will be a scammers dream come true

Say you can get a good deal on Long range fiber transceivers at 100$ a pop (This still completely Leaves out the Equipment this will still be needed to be hooked up to.).. you need 1 on each end... So your amost at 1/4 of a million dollars just for lasers.. No equipment to hook up yet at all... Just to light up the fiber.. Cost of recovery... if your broadband provider can cut more than 15$ a month in profit they are doing VERY good... so lets just say they have a profit of 15$ a month on 45$ It will take just over 13 months to do cost recovery Just on the Lasers required... and lasers will end up being the cheapest item on the list... If you can get fiber dug in the city for less than 75$ a foot Your smilin... and overhead is 35$ a foot or more... Thats just for Installation.. not including the medium.. (which is Virtually free compared to the installation cost).. Then you have Termination equipment.. You would be lucky to be able to terminate for 300$ a end.. I really doubt you could end up with less than 1000$ a house to terminate both ends of the fiber... and at 7.5 years untill there is profit to be made... How many of todays Investors are willing to wait that long to see a return on thier investment.. Practically 0...
Thats just incompetence... either technical or managerial.. Cable modem systems work good when properly maintained and operated... Largest Problems with it are not funding maintence properly to keep the system running well.. and Fools that think they know everything and actually know nothing of what they are doing. Pretty simple.. Book an apointment with a DSL provider in your area (if you have one) and phone up time warner and tell them you are not happy with your service and they have untill the DSL gets installed to fix the service or remove it.. and You will not pay for a broken service. Just use a polite tone when talking to them and they should fix it.. if they don't... well why would you want to pay for thier service when it doesn't work.

Most companies worry about their image when releasing a new product and do everything they can to have a successful launch of the product... MS has allways fallen short on this... This is the general public opinion of MS.. what is MS doing to change this view? I don't see alot... You'd think if the OS was as stable as MS claims they would have a Software engineering team helping BMW write thier software so MS will gain credibility.. But instead Typical MS mentality about the problems... MS is just a Marketing company.. not much else... They don't need to do much to maintain a monopoly.. They shift as much as they can onto the marketing depeartment to keep themselves afloat.
While Telco's and MS do have a Similar Mindset when it comes to somethings.. Its does not mean MS should get into Telecomunications products... Pennies are rarely used from my experience.. Most people are in a rush to sit and count out exact change most times when buying something.. and Pennies usually get thrown into jars and what not and saved up in massive bulk to be taken to the bank ect.... Eliminating pennies would show a promising reduction in the ammount of coins returned..

If information is placed on a web site without some method to secure that information being used other than its intened purpose then It should not be data mined... But if that information is in the open with no steps taken to secure that information then it should be ok to datamine.
