All that ham nerd stuff was probably meaningful once, but is there a single good reason why people can't broadcast whatever they want? I mean, sure, stick within allocated frequencies, don't bleed over other ones etc, but check out the rules - they're hilarious. Are we still worried about political subversion and Russian spies?
I'd love it if Linux was something Windows was trying to catch up with, but I'm afraid it's not even a grey cloud on the horizon as far as microsoft is concerned. If only it WAS one OS, supported by everyone from Dell to Oracle, it would wipe the floor with windows, but as long as there are 10 windows managers and 2000 distributions it'll never, ever happen.
Should have called it Surface, and advertised/marketed cool shiny tablets, laptops and phones using Surface. The next version of Windows should be called Surface. They should hide windows (small w) on any promotional stuff (yes, us nerds know it's there so we can get work done on Visual Studio etc) but regular users do indeed hate Windows.
It would be a good analogy if you were talking about, say, a site which was targeted at - and largely read by - people interested in political issues.
It's perfectly reasonably to understand that the majority of Slashdot users either know what Clang/LLVM is, or are willing and capable of looking them up. Clearly, if you've not idea what Clang is, then you're going to skate on over the headline to the next stor, just like I did when I saw the headline about giving cyborgs rights.
A browser not trusting something that's not to be trusted is a positive thing. Yes, some old sites will suffer. That's how it's supposed to work. They'd better up their game. People expect security to be take more seriously these days, as there is more at stake and more muppets with a lot of time on their hands trying to attack you.
> Now don't talk of Android because we know it's all fragmented.
Wow - people still say that in 2014? This is still a tech site, right? Windows has users on different sized monitors, and slightly different versions of Windows - I guess that's fragmented too.
You don't have to use "repeat" in written text online because there's no chance anything is going to happen to the first instance of the text. It just wastes space and looks a little self important.
> No doubt, history is filled with all kinds of evil misogyny, racism, and homophobia..
History, yes. It was all addressed satisfactorily a long time ago. That's why you never hear about black people dying younger than white people, for example, or being over-represented in prison; why there are so many females in the boardroom, and pay is equal etc. I'm not sure why people are complaining all the time - everything is fine.
It's software (hence the stupid comments about cost - it's effectively zero; android already has it, for example). Cyanogenmod can use that aspect of the AOSP stack or not, as they see fit, as can any other rom producer, or end user (if they've a rooted phone).
I have no idea why Microsoft isn't pushing the fuck out of c# on Linux. At the moment for apps you have to use c++ or Java if you want to support both. They've already open sourced the compilers.
Luser is most definitely loser. Because most users are idiots. No ability to partially diagnose or even use common sense to solve any problem (ie. if the problem persists when you log onto another PC why do you think your PC has a problem?)
Aren't they obliged to cancel your account if you ask, though? I mean, say you say "i want to close my account", they asked if you're sure, aware of the great deals etc. Say no, again, politely, then firmly "close my account now". What would happen if they continued trying to get you to stay and you stay silent? You aren't obliged to go through their script; you've told them your side of things. Can't you just stop paying them and if there's any come back tell them the date/time of the call, who you spoke to and ask what the problem is? Perhaps there needs to be a mandatory website/service where you just click/say "i'm out of here" and there's no come back on their part?

It's amusing going on holiday to the USA and spending a little time in Cuba and listening to what people from each country say about the other!
You're right, though. Cuba does it's own dirty work, rather than outsource it.
"We tortured some folks" indeed!
I think OP is using `public domain` in its old, Amiga-era definition, which is probably closest nowadays to freeware.

Never heard of him. Tech journalist? Slashdot employee? "First time submitter"? Proven track record of insightful commentary/accurate predictions?
Otherwise, why should I care?

Stupid name, looks like it was designed in the last com bubble, awful on mobile, no users, posts retarded crap about Indian takeaway deliveries.
There's scope for a rival to Slashdot, but that isn't it.

Or in china, where all of these 2mb/32mb cards come from!

I'm sure with double token, torture apologist Rice on board they'll keep going for weeks yet.
From somewhere or other: "You can't shut us down. The internet is about the free exchange and sale of other people's ideas. We've done nothing wrong."
> WTF?? Another female geek role model bites the dust. She's .... gorgeous
lol! What about Mr Walrus - is he gorgeous too?
Easier to boot from a Linux USB install, download and copy the files straight onto the windows drive then reboot.
That's more a factor of their cost than their durability.
Nothing close? Not even a Macbook or decent windows laptop?

Read it for a laugh, just don't tell anyone about anything you read, and you'll be fine!

He made rockets out of prisoners?
You don't get to call someone a sociopath just as an insult; it has a technical meaning.
