Then you live in a magical fantasy world, lay off the substance abuse. I doubt there exists a company that won't prosecute you for breaking into their network. If you're an ex-employee it just serves to make you look disgruntled.

    1. Perform a "vulnerability assesment" of your own. Possibly even try something similar to Welchia - to demonstate a) that their computer systems are insecure and b) that outsourcing your job is leading to weaker security

Because it isn't enough to have lost your job, you need to try and land yourself in jail as well? Companies don't react kindly to people getting into their networks, it doesn't matter if it was for "the good of the company"

  3. Does DD work this way? on Experiences w/ Drive Imaging Software? · · Score: 1

I've been wondering for some time actually how dd treats partition tables. Say I have a 40gb drive and image it using:
    dd if=/dev/hda of=/root/hda.11-12-03

If I then get a 120gb drive and go to restore that image will it create only the 40gb partitions and leave the rest of the space unused/unpartitioned? I've never had enough hardware laying around to find out.

While the article makes some good points regarding the ambiguity of the lawsuit and how the RIAA doesn't have much ground to stand on, for any of that to matter the Judge and Legal counsel would have to be technologically literate. Without that even the Law / CIS professors from Princeton testifying would mean nothing (not including the author, I doubt a student would testify).

A lot of people are giving feedback along the lines of "Get a lawyer to sue for your rights." However, did any of you think about the situation he'll have at the company even if he does keep the job? If the first thing you did after you got the job was sue the company over your rights, I bet you'll wish you never had the job in the first place. Corporations don't exactly respond to lawsuits with kindness.

While I understand needing to respect your rights and stand up for yourself, think about the situation if you DO win and keep the job.

  13. In regards to the damages on Don't Sever A High-Tech Lifeline for Musicians · · Score: 2, Interesting

The article refers to any mp3s he releases will infringe copyright law. However if it was his own work and he released it to the public domain how could the RIAA intervene? As I understood the rulings in the past, the RIAA's authority only extends to labels and artists they represent. How would this affect smaller artists who -choose- to put their music online?

There are a lot of free remix sites and whatnot out there. I'd recommend grabbing all you can from some of those, ex: overclocked (seems down atm) has a lot of game music remixes. I know there are also a lot of techno dj sites as well (google for them)

  15. Seems Ironic on Mono - 'Breaking Down the .Net Barriers' · · Score: 5, Interesting

I'm taking part in a Microsoft sponsored contest at my university currently, the rules dictate that we have to use one of the .NET technologies (ASP.Net, C#, VB.net etc). However the rules specifically state that we cannot use open source CLRs such as Mono and/or Rotor. I just find it odd that the article talks about how Mono may help gain MS support, but at the same time MS seems adamant at keeping us from using it.

Then again, I go to Ohio State. What do people out in Ohio know :)

  16. But why *should* Joe Schmo / Longneck switch? on Is Windows Ready For Joe Longneck? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I'll start out by saying that I'm a firm believer in Linux and GPL/GNU/Open Source/What have you. I use Linux for both my home and work stations and couldn't be happier with the setup.

Now that that's out of the way, I'd like to know why Joe really should switch. Everyone is always advocating "Linux for the masses" and the benefits of open source, however they seem to be oblivious to the fact that Joe probably doesn't care about that. Joe has been using Windows for years, Joe is comfortable with Windows. Sure, Linux is free if Joe knows how to download it (he is Joe after all), and he gets only online docs and community support with that. That means if Joe wants his Linux with his manual and cds he still has to pay for it. Now why would Joe pay for something he's uncomfortable with when he could just as well pay for something he's used for years?

It isn't as much a matter of "Which OS is better" as it is a matter of "What are all the Joes of the world more comfortable with?". Most "Joes" don't like the idea of radically changing the way they use their computers.

    Predictions on the outcome:

The game starts with the Sims moving west to say hello to their WC3 friends. After the WC3 grunts brutally ravage the Sims, the Everquest players all move north in an attempt to camp the Sims spawn point to get rare drops. Seeing this, the C&C players begin amassing Tanks for a rush while at the same time firing potshots at the Trolls who were dumbfounded by the fact that their axes just weren't stopping the tanks. Eventually C&C rushes the map and faces heavy resistance from Everquest until all the EQ players are nerfed. Right as C&C finishes off WC3, Quake appears and kills everything.
