DSL isn't dedicated. Once you reach the DSLAM you are sharing your bandwidth. Also, all customers at any ISP share the ISP's pipe. The pr0n site you visit is sharing bandwidth with all the people visiting that site at that time.

Sure, you share cable service "sooner" with the people in your local loop, but all Internet access is shared at some point.

Cable may be worse than DSL in your area, but not everyone has the same experience.

I have now switched to two Sony 18" LCDs using DVI and they are noticably sharper than my previous Trinitron monitor. Plus it weighs a heck of a lot less, uses less power, and I don't have electron guns aimed at my face.

Of course, it isn't great for non-native resolutions. I need to upgrade to a dual DVI Radeon 9800 so I can run all my games at 1280x1024. :-)

We are under EA (enterprise agreement) version 6 here at my company and this is how it works. Once a year you tell MS how many computers are using what software products. This only happens once per year. Yes, if you cut the number of machines in half you won't see an immediate savings until the next time you give MS your numbers.

However, if you end up doubling your computers you come out ahead: you basically get free use of the software until you update your numbers with MS.

This also means you could get free use of software if you only used it for part of a year. For example, if you give MS numbers each January, you could install extra stuff in February, remove it in December, and MS would never have to know you used it.

The EA does end up saving money if you were going to upgrade all the time anyway, or perhaps only skip one version. If you tend to skip two or more versions, the EA would most likely cost you more money.

I have two Series 1 TiVos and both have 802.11b cards inside them. It's awesome, but WiFi is kind of slow and it takes about 3 hours to transfer 1 hour of video to my PC for burning to a VCD/SVCD. :-)

The hackability of TiVo is certainly awesome, but I doubt that even 5% of TiVo users hack their system. The price between the two systems has always been comparable, so I doubt that was it either. It probably boils down to marketing and the legal battles.

I'm glad TiVo is playing it safe and not implementing features that piss off the networks (automatic commercial skip, sharing of recorded shows, etc). The ReplayTV had some great features that TiVo lacked, but it got the networks on their bad side.

In any case, I can already rip shows off of my TiVo and burn them easily to VCD or SVCD. The only real problem is my TiVo is WiFi-enabled so a 1 hour show takes like 3 hours to transfer. 100mbit would be better but I haven't run Cat5 all over the place.
