    Well if California hadn't stopped the forest service from doing periodic controlled burns that wouldn't be an issue. Instead you get dry dead underbrush building up. What's really annoying is that fire is part of the lifecycle of the forest. There are seeds that literally won't germinate without fire.

    Yep the cosmology community has gotten much better at coming up with bad candidates for dark matter / dark energy. Real shame they are playing trial and error with literally an entire universe of candidates.

    That would be a much better post if you actually had a list of crimes. Of course that's pretty hard to do when you don't have anything that's actually a crime.

    Oh and no, not being liked by the DC bureaucracy isn't actually a crime. When it does become one it's probably going to be worse for you than you think.

    The team, from Lancaster University, tested their prototypes with a hairdryer, which was enough to prove its initial efficacy and win the UK national Dyson award a month ago, before being announced as the global winner today.

    Well to some extent I agree with that.

    But at least this guy knew what he didn't know and was willing to refer the issue to someone who did know.

    Do you need a race car driver to run the national highway administration ?

    Doing actual security work is probably the last thing anyone expects him to do and the last thing his job calls for.

    What he is going to have to do is be the voice of his agency within the government
    Insure it's properly funded.
    Settle internal disputes.

    Where he will have problems is making informed decisions about the merits of different technologies and given that technical people aren't even particularly useful there it's not that big a loss. Just think of how many technologies you thought were going to be the next big thing but nobody remembers anymore.
