Are you an idiot? Mac OS X and even linux are "compatable".
No. I'm not an idiot. And I am a *nix fan. But look at statistics. Just how much of the home and workplace desktop does *nix hold? (and when I say *nix that includes OSX because it's Unix based) That number is tiny in comparison to Windows. The simple fact is, the company that most computer using workers are going to work for will likely 1. be using Windows and 2. be using a program that only works in Windows.
Is this how it should be? No. Is this how it is? Yes.
My school ran macs all the way up until my senior year. Then they got rid of ALL the mac machines and got IBM Windows boxes. Saving money was not on their mind. What was then? They wanted to teach students how to use the most popular OS.
I'm sorry Mac people, but Windows is the most popular OS. The school wants to teach kids how to use the OS they're most likely to use in the workplace. Mac (especially OSX) may be better, but in most people's eyes, popular (meaning compatability) is better and this is the unfortunate but sad truth. Microsoft has simply cornered the market.
God I know. Want yourself a miniature computer then buy a damn PDA. I'm less concerned with cell phone gadgets and add ons and more concerned with range. I'd rather have a cell phone I can use anywhere in the world than one that I can play Pac Man on. I can't believe people actually buy into this crap.
This article was posted at exactly the same time that my server at RIT in New York got hit (I currently live in Kansas). I had my website in one tab and Slashdot on the other. When my server stopped responding, I figured one of the sysadmins down there was updating Apache or whatever else can cause the server to go down. But when I refreshed Slashdot's main page, lookie what I find here!:(
I hope the power comes back on the east coast soon. I want my damn website back.:-|
The Indian Institute of Technology declines a higher percentage of its applicants than US ivy league schools!
Does this really mean anything? I mean, for a country with a BILLION people that only have SEVEN Institutes of Technology, you would kinda of expect a lot of people to be declined.
Yes, it does mean something. It means that only the best few people of that billion actually do get in. The intense competition is what drives their most valuable export to the United States: Computer Scientists.
Countries in the South East Asia really arent trying to push their tech sector much.
This statement is quite false. China has its own thriving Linux distro. India has the most prestigious tech college in the world. The Indian Institute of Technology declines a higher percentage of its applicants than US ivy league schools! The founder of Sun Microsystems graduated from that college and was born/raised in India. In fact, I find it very surprising that India didn't already have PS2s. If we US citizens don't start realizing that other countries are catching up with us in the tech race, we're going to fall behind.
And if I create a piece of proprietary software, I'm somehow magically protected?
If Linux wasn't open source and it actually DID contain SCO's code, no one would know because it'd be closed source. No way to prove it, no way to tell. But SCO goes poking around in the open source Linux kernel, finds something they think is their's, and starts a big mess.
Furthermore, if it was closed source and sold and SCO DID find out their code was in it somehow, Linux would be making money because, of course, it was being sold. So Linux would defend itself with its profits. Just like if SCO tried this crap on Apple, Apple would have more money to defend itself in court.
Linux, being open source and non profit, does not.
If you replace 'developers' with 'marketing and publishers' in all these articles they become fairly true.
Exactly. One of the biggest problems with major games, especially MMOs that continue on after the initial release is marketers and publishers. They always want a new infusement of fresh stuff to market such as expansions and so on. So instead of fixing bugs, they've got all the programmers busy coding the next expansion because to the marketers, getting out more expansions faster than your competitor is better than making an actual quality product.
That modded down thing is my sig bud. I'm making fun of all the morons on slashdot who put that in their posts in an attempt to draw sympathy from mods.
ever happened to using cell phones to.. oh.. I don't know.. talk to people? Christ. I don't need an all-in-one wonder device that does everythingl I need a freakin' cell phone. And wtf is up with these cell phones that sing songs instead of ring? God that's fucking annoying. For these reasons I've boycotted most "modern" cellphones. My cellphone isn't a computer. It doesn't need 3d images. It's a fucking phone.
I agree. This whole SCO issue is total shit. Simply put, Linux is open source. Any claim to the code that's in the Linux kernel is immaterial because Linux has been released under the GPL. If it's GPL'd, too damn bad SCO.
That's what I'd tell the SCO if I were a judge. Then I'd throw their case out of court.
Open Source's greatest feature and worst flaw is that it's free and open. Because there's next to no profit in it, software authors have next to no protection from getting sued. So in order to protect things like Linux from SCO, there needs to be some kind of a fund like this. Again, unfortunate but true.
(c)olleges and universities generally do not have a legal duty to control students' private conduct. Students therefore should not assume that their college or university will accept liability for them or provide them with legal representation.
Isn't this freakin' obvious? I mean damn. Anyone who thinks their college is gonna cover their ass for things they do that are illegal has been dreamin'. Just because copyright infringement laws suck ass and need to be rewritten doesn't mean you can go ahead and violate them regularly without the possibility of penalty.
What sort of social impact can we expect when/if life expectancies are measured in centuries?
Well for one, we're going to start purging ourselves of all emotions at an early age. We're also going to evolve pointy ears. Then, we're going to develop super strength and mild repressed telepathy. There will probably be some kind of telepathy ban at first, but later mind melds will become common.
Oh yeah, we're also going to restrict sex so that we only get to do it once every few years. We'll call that time the Ponn Far. It will be deeply spiritual to us.
Yup. That's what's gonna happen to us if we start measuring our age in the three digits.
What the fuck? How is this thread offtopic and overrated? We've got some fucking bastard disgruntled moderators from hell here don't we.
In response to you, I was talking about fucking Windows if it wasn't blatantly obvious. We bash Windows here, remember? Windows may be mainstream but it's unbelievably badly written compared to just about everything else. I'm tired of poking around in the registry trying to stop stupid error messages from popping up. Watch out Linux, here I come.
I think I'm going to change my sig so it says at the end of each of my comments "Oh well, I'll probably get modded down for this anyway." It seems the reverse psychology works better on the mods.
So if I voted for the IMAP candidate......does that mean everyone gets to see my vote, until I purge it?
No. It means you don't have to get pissed off that the votes are POP3 when you format the voting machine multiple times a month because it's running an absurdly unstable OS which shall remain nameless.
I've formatted 5 times in the last 3 weeks and the one thing I feel fortunate about is the fact that my E-mail is IMAP. I've lost none of it. Needless to say, I'm dropping my absurdly unstable OS which shall remain nameless and learning Gentoo Linux. (Not an easy task. Been trying to install Gentoo for about 24 hours now. But I refuse to use a "lesser" distro for Linux newbies. Cold turkey's the way to go.)
Hey now, don't get me wrong here. I haven't the slightest idea of what I'm talking about anyway seeing as how my comment was of typical slashdot mentality; I didn't RTFA. I just made fun of it. As for karma? My post history is riddled with flamebaits, trolls, and what have you. I couldn't care less about karma. (Seems everytime I open my mouth in games.slashdot.org I get an instant mod down.) What I did gain though was a chance to take my mind off repartitioning and formatting for a few minutes on my other machine. You know how much fun that can be. But it worked out. I'm running a dual athlon board yay! Err. I seem to have gone offtopic. Move along...
Is this how it should be? No. Is this how it is? Yes.
lol man that's hillarious. Apparantly the mods don't think so though.

hey man. at least i have the balls to troll on my real account and not anonymously.
i'll have to come up with something not-as-good for the next article so morons like you actually get the joke.
lol I knew this would generate some interesting responses.

Shouldn't this be on interviews.slashdot.org and not games.slashdot.org?

they don't recommend it. They have an "our's is better!" mentality. Would you recommend something that competes with you?
