turn off system monitoring (otherwise it'll warn everytime a program calls another) and click the "create rule" button when you permit/deny.
it'll never ask you again.
...wiretapping modems should be easy, right? it's not. it's *murder* tapping analogue modems and trying to get a signal: the two ends are slightly out of synch, and getting realtime tapping going is very hard indeed. whether it's harder than triple-DES encrypted VPN or IPSEC's another matter though...
because it's integrated on the mobo presumably

and it'd cost more to make an AOL-OEM one that took it out. it won't be costing the end user anything, so why not leave it there?
65 UKP here for OEM copies, and that's from the cheapest suppliers. doesn't get any cheaper unless you're buying 100+ either. wanna post a link to your supplier?
great, now do it again

...go get all the bits, put them in a big cardboard box, and give it to your gran for 23 dollars a month. operate a 24 hour helpline, and see how long it takes her to build the machine and get online.
you want to buy components in bulk to sell to make a cheap PC? you can't easily buy sub 2GHz processors any more, and if you can, they're no cheaper than the more common faster ones - supply and demand. windows xp on 128mb's unpleasant - 256MB nice and usable. likewise, a 20gb hard disk costs about the same as a 40gb one - i think this is actually quite a sensible basic spec.
...if it's GPS based and just requires batteries or a 12v feed, it'd retrofit to anything. you'd presumably have it installed with a sealed tag to show if you take it out and put it in granny's car whilst you're off street racing, but there'd be no reason it couldn't be fitted to *anything*.
...you can get hardware devices that do this now that sit in line with the keyboard (keyghost, et al)...you can even get keyboards with them already installed. as for software: if it's compromised, then no.
as ever, unless you built it, you can't trust it 100%. however, for the non-paranoid, a 99% level of confidence is probably enough.

my house was built in 1875 (in the UK, in a little conservation area called "Dodge Hill". That's where the Dodge family of Dodge City and Dodge Motors came from...) and it's great: a victorian house that's full of character, built back when you had craftsmen doing everything by hand. it's chock full of high tech, too. whilst a lot of modern houses may be looking a little rough in 100 years, a lot of older ones don't.
the point is that you can read a doc and type at the same time: i.e. you can find the keys on the keyboard by feel without having to look at them. if you're typing up what's in your head, this isn't particularly necessary, but if you're transcribing or commenting a doc, it's very useful indeed; the cognitive overhead from looking down at the keys, and looking up at another screen/piece of paper with all attendant refocussing etc is quite high.
...ever seen that run on an X40? No, didn't think so. And for the record, on a new battery, my Tosh M1 centrino/pentium M will do 7 hours on office-type work, with not too much optical drive activity.

to add to this: you have separate, "priviledged access" admin accounts - so you NEVER logon to a box for admin work with an account that has a roaming profile to pull down, internet access or email account. this is more important in a windows farm.
they sell a variety of handsets. the more popular dictate what the public wants. the ones that die off into oblivion don't. end of story.
so anyone who has one of these can sit down and start acting as a dhcp server? that's going to be *marvellous* in public wifi hotspots, isn't it?

are retailers going to accept a system that gives a significant false negative rate? no. so will you ever get hauled to jail by accident? no.

remember webtv? and eden's aren't cheap - check component prices.
do they? in the UK we've all binned them and get british telecom to pipe the calls directly into a box on site.

agreed. we use win2k and have put in probably 10,000 man hours of system testing. *we* have proved it, and it passed our formal requirements spec.
