I just took a.NET 3.5 web app (Pretty complicated - with web services/AJAX/etc) over the weekend and fired it up in Monodevelop 2.4 and it compiled and ran with no modifications. (Yes, I was surprised myself) It's not lagging anywhere near as far as you think it is.
And Sun may have open sourced Java SE in 2006, but looks like Oracle closed it again in 2010. So your point is a bit weak. (And you're talking Java SE, not the whole platform)
