    then use of email through his gateway is free expression. however, people blacklisting his box is also free expression.

    additionally, i gather he has an account with verio, which has certain provisions you must agree with to have an account, one of which i imagine compells him to avoid running an open relay. If he has a problem with these provisions, he needs to find a new provider, and if he can't find a provider w/out those provisions, he needs to suck it up and realize that in the civilized world, open relays are bad.

    Yelling anything during a movie is expression, but unless you're at Rocky Horror, it just isn't appropriate, and could get you kicked out of the theatre. If you take passing spam as yelling, and the internet as the theatre, it makes a decent analogy.

    You might want to look into getting some of the tools used for using copied diablo 2 cds. I've heard Daemon Tools is pretty decent. What it does is fudges the results from operations that are supposed to do fun things w/ the cd so that diablo 2 thinks the cd is authentic regardless of if it is or not. This is useful both for copying the cd, as well as for using the cd on a cd-rom that recovers slowly from disc errors. (On one of my cd-rom drives, to play dungeon keeper (another game with similar disc protection), with the legitimate cd, with daemon tools on, startup took 2 or less seconds, but with daemon tools off, startup took 2 or more minutes))

    on the plus side, you can return something to fry's for no reason at all, and don't have to worry about it being sent back to the manufacturer

    assuming your pc has a fairly often internet connection, turn on the time correction service in xp (its available from the time/date properties) and then go searching in the registry to change the time to something more frequent than once a week

    (my laptop loses a lot of time, so i have xp synch the clock every 2 hours)

    s/too damn geeky/too damn much processing power/;

    although, what you could do is have windows update time on boot (xp has built-in support for periodic time updating, other versions can do it too, but not quite as easily), and have linux update time on boot, and not care what time it is when you start running :)

    i know the cable modem i have at home has no sense of time when it starts, it picks up the time from the cable signal (would be a nice feature of the service to allow my pc's to pick up that signal too, but *sigh*)

    pay extra for the super warranty, i know of at least one company (toshiba) which has a warranty which includes 'if anything happens to this other than fire or abuse, we'll fix it' once a year for the term of the warranty

    try to see and play with a floor model first, try to evaluate the strength of the case in a store: metal may dent, but (in general) it doesn't crack, plastic (unless really thick) will crack.

    nearly all of the weight of the laptop should come from the structure, get a thick,heavy laptop

    if all else fails, get some (additional) metal plates to reinforce delicate parts: i got a $25 386 laptop (formerly used by the IRS) from a swap meet once that had a large metal plate on the back of the screen holding it together... it may look ghetto-style, but it works

    you may wish to look into getting some sort of FPGA...

    at the school i'm going to, we use boards from altera(.com), i believe they go for $150, and you can probably get an educational license to their software

    you can design with a schematic tool and their software will compile it into something you can program the chip with....

    this is a very nice thing for digital electronics, but i don't think it would work for analog circuits.

    their software also supports VHDL which is nice for getting a chip to do stuff without having to know how it is done. (as a side effect of not knowing how its done, the compiler can optimize it so it may work better than something you layed out yourself, assuming you aren't a master at optimizing circuits)

    per-capita is an average, which is not a very good figure without the standard deviation...

    for example, if your country has 5000 people, and 4990 of them make $10 a year, and the remaining 10 make $450,000 a year, you have a per capita income of $100, which does not acurately reflect the income of most of the people, which you would be able to notice with the standard deviation

    Microsoft distributes the base true type fonts at no cost, in fact they either invented or popularized the (usually inexpensive) true type font system to compete with expensive fonts from other vendors.

    Other than the basic fonts (courer new, times new roman, maybe arial), i don't use much in the way of fonts in windows or linux, and microsoft provides those fonts to me on both platforms

    pre-packaged applications are nice when you trust the 'producer' of the package to both not be putting a trojan on your box, and to compile with options you either like or are willing to put up with.

    it saves compile time, and probably download time as well (depending on the package of course.... for example linux source > 10 meg tar.gz (or bzip2 if you insist), linux compiled 1 meg (in general))

    in my opinion, open source is about having the option to compile stuff yourself, which doesn't mean you have to

    if used in a desktop capacity, most laptop hardware would not be any less reliable than desktop hardware.

    Most of the problems with hardware in laptops that i've experienced is due to space constraints, motion, heat (due to space), or poor enclosure design leading to flex of various things (mainboards) that shouldn't be flexing.

    If you took all the components of a business class laptop, and put them in a tower (you'ld need to get some longer cables) with a nice fan, you'ld still have high cost, and performance issues, but not any problems with reliability

    what happens if you use rm -P on a file that has more than one link into the tree (created with ln, or the like).... will the file get obliterated, or will rm give an error, or silently unlink the one copy?

    Don't some filesystems have options to 'secure delete' files that are completely unlinked? I think that would be a better solution.

    audio cd-r's are more expensive because they include a royalty to some group or other, based on the assumption that you are pirating the music.

    i would assume, since you are paying for the privilege of pirating the music, that if punished for piracy, you could demand your fees back :) (only if you keep good records)

    on the other hand, if you use 'professional'(expensiver) systems that use the normal (data) cd-rs, you are assumed to have legitimate use, and do not have to pay for piracy up front.

    well... you could get a dreamcast with a broadband adapter (good luck finding a broadband adapter for a decent price, but...) and with the proper browser disk (some are downloadable) you could use that to surf the web.... and play video games when you get bored of the web

    also, ftp is bad!, you want ssh, seriously. ignoring security issues, ftp has an old and cludgy network setup that doesn't work too well when firewalls are involved
