    nowhere does it say 'no laptops'

    my friend's laptop is a pIII 850, with 256 meg ram, a direct3d compliant video card w/ 8 meg ram, 20+ gig hdd, 56k/10/100 network, directx compatible sound card, a touchpad, a keyboard, a usb trackball, and at least an 8x dvd-rom drive (swapable with a cd-r) running win2k

    there is no part of those requirements that she is lacking in, yet the game does not work properly...

    if the school didn't want us playing games on their laptops, they'd save money and buy desktops for all the rooms

    somebody i know at school is an EQ player....

    she play(ed) it on the school issued laptop, which she just got just this september (current model compaq armada e500 with an ati rage mobility pro 8meg video card)... but now since, the latest patch broke the video (made transparencies in 2d sprites black), and EQ no longer supports the video card, she's SOL. its hard/impossible to upgrade the video on a laptop, and this is a top of the line enterprise laptop, through a school technology program, so she can't exactly go out and get a different one.

    mmmm cleartype... its the only really important feature that would make me not be compelled to reformat and install w2k again (not that theres anything wrong with xp, theres just not anything other than cleartype that i use)

    the time_t thing is actively being fixed though.

    i believe i read that every 64-bit linux uses a 64-bit int for time_t which means in another gazillion (approximate) years, we will need to shift to 128-bit :)

    It is quite possible that they put a somewhat short lease in the dhcp server so if you ever change to a dynamic ip (i assume you pay a premium for static), they can transition you over, without having to have you kick your dhcp client.

    Also, it is possible they didn't put you on a static yet, but most dhcp servers will accept dhcp lease renewals. My (rr.com) cablemodem at home does so, and I think the ip changed only 2 times since i started paying attention, and once was because it switched into a different subnet (66. instead of 24. :) The lease period was 24 hours last i checked

    i get open mag, or did, but i found it very disappointing. The ads are nice (free magazines usually have nice ads, there were some local magazines i picked up solely to look at the ads, but i digress). The content is really bad though, the topics are interesting, but the articles don't have anything to them.

    I guess its aimed at the tourist techie.

    Linux Journal on the other hand, is much more of a technical magazine, and there are many interesting things in there that I can't read past the first paragraph because its allready over my head, but if the first paragraph is really interesting, i'll take a look online and figure out the basics, and then read the rest of the article.

    lj also has nice ads :)

    His comment isn't very coherent, but there is still the possibility of data landing on a bad sector and the OS not detecting it. (One of my system has marginal ram, and this occasionally causes fs corruption, usually the os detects it, and has a cow (as well it should), but I'd imagine, on occasion it causes damage without the os detecting it, and an occasional fsck would catch that)

    yes, but if you compile a patched kernel, you'll only have to do it once.

    when was the last time you fscked your drive? maybe its prime time for you to do so (all sorts of things can cause fs corruption without marking the drive unclean... happens more often with poor/overstressed components, but it can happen anyhow)

    how hard is it really to compile a kernel?

    download the source, read teh kernel-howto, go through the menu (or x config), make bzImage, etc

    then repeat as necessary to get it to boot properly (ide root drive, load ide driver as module is always a good combo :)

    from experience with the verio location in downtown (its in one of those huge buildings, 707 wilshire), next time you're in the colo, while doing a reboot (or whatever convient time), check and see if your key opens anybody elses rack. The building security was pretty good about checking to make sure you didn't bring any computers out of the facility without a note (they even tried to stop me taking out the 386 laptop i brought in a few hours prior), but i don't know how difficult it would be to get a note. We didn't lose any hardware though, and they said they'd change the keys, but i didn't get to follow up.

    a company i used to work for went initially with verio because it was closer to the office and cheaper (they are mainly in colo for reliability of connection, rather than bandwidth, and verio was one of teh only major companies that offered bandwidth packages in the neighborhood of what they used), but verio had some wierd network issues, like problems with getting to services on specific ports on specific ips, but not to that port on other ips we had from them.

    it got to be such a pain in the ass, that they moved to exodus, but it was at around that time i stopped working for them. I think exodus ended up with more reliable networking.

    i find that in many cases of classes without labs (will discuss labs later) i have two options if i want to learn the material

    1. go to class once a week, to see whats happening, when tests are, etc and read the book, work problems etc.

    2. go to class (nearly) every day, and make some effort at paying attention (usually falling asleep, but hey... playing tapes while you are falling asleep is supposed to be great for memory).

    with the second method, i avoid buying the book, and save some money :)

    with lab courses, if the labs are relevant, it enforces working problems, so i can avoid a few lectures, but with irrelevant labs, i still have to attend classes. (at this school, you automatically get an f if you don't complete all lab assignments)

    (assuming dvd is encrypted)

    i believe if you do that, you'll have a perfect copy of the encrypted data, but without the key file. i'm pretty sure that there is no provision to write to the 'key area' of any of the writable dvd discs.

    doesn't mozilla allready block flash plugins?

    (i couldn't get mozilla/linux to work with any flash plugins available on macromedia.com... it tried to work, but instead of running flash, it crashed mozilla)

    We used a 35 mm slide which had a negative of a picture of two wires close together.

    Worked pretty well, our calculations put the slit at about 0.13 mm

    their nicest (in my opinion, probably because its the one i've got) corporate laptop, the e500, also only comes w/ a 1 year warranty. If I personally bought it, I'd probably go with an extened service plan, laptops can get all sorts of brain damage, and I know I'd make use of the warranty. (If nothing else, near the end of the warranty period, I could say 'hey my lcd got a dead pixel' and watch them squirm :)

    i was actually playing freeciv last night, its pretty good. I haaven't really played much civ II, but it seems pretty true to my sense of how civ should be (i've played more than my fair share of civ I, and alpha centauri).

    The UI is pretty decent, although using the mouse to move units by dragging would be a nice feature stolen from AC

    Yes, but at least how tests go here at msoe.edu, the professors either provide you with all the formulas you would need, or you're allowed to bring in your own 'cheat sheet' or the like to a majority of the tests.

    I think the teachers realize that for most students there is a choice: a. learn the underlying material, or b. memorize the formulas

    and they would rather discourage the latter option

    graciously bowwing out, would involve keeping all the current customers, and not accepting new customers or customer moves.
