    NPR gets a significant chunk of its money from radio stations.

    And where do you think the local stations get all that money? Hint: not from donations - those go straight to NPR.

    The local stations get their money from the federal government, then they hand it over to NPR. That's why NPR claims they only get 2% of their money from the government, but scream bloody murder if Congress tries to cut funding. Something over 50% of their revenue starts out as tax dollars or deductions before it gets laundered through the local stations.

    Teach kids how to do algebra, teach them history, how to write poetry, how to play a musical instrument, how to code, how to speak in front of a group of people. They'll self-select into something they enjoy and/or are good at.

    He understood how innovation and market saturation work together. Come out with something new, it sells great for a while. Then you need to come out with something else new, not make incremental changes to a product that's fighting a saturated market. If the new product makes the older product obsolete (e.g. iPhone vs iPod) so much the better.

    Tim Cook either doesn't understand this, or he doesn't have the vision to develop something new

    I have Karma to burn, so I'll ask a question that has been on my mind for a while - is gender balance (in any industry) a goal? Or is it a means to a goal.

    That's a very reasonable question, but the answer is "neither". The goal is equal opportunity; quotas don't solve that problem. A doctor would point out that they are treating one symptom while the patient is dying of the disease.

    The jobs they compare aren't even comparable. Women never dominated computer programming, they dominated key punching. That disappeared when the programmers started using terminals and data was captured electronically. I'll bet if he looked more closely at the other jobs he would see something similar. When the high paying part of a job appears or disappears the men follow the money.

    Nonsense. Spraying the ground before planting a non-glyphosate resistant crop is common practice to kill weeds and/or a cover crop. Read up on "no-till" agriculture.

    It's also common with some crops to spray at the end of the season to make harvesting easier; for example, potatoes are often sprayed a couple of weeks before being dug to kill the tops.

    The problem is political corruption, but not IP law.

    If you really want to help farmers in Third World countries you would help them break the monopolies that the commodity buyers have in their markets, where a farmer must sell at a price set buy the buyer who has the political connections. That is what drives farmers to suicide.

    Even if the titanic turbines pass the subscale modeling tests in 2019, Loth said it would take "probably 10, 15 years" before the first facility would be up and running.

    It's at least 15 years away and they know they'll never get approval to build them on land. But still a reasonable approach where the conditions are right. It's almost like they're trying to find a workable and cost effective solution, unlike other alternatives that depend on subsidies.

    So now that the optimum situation is to have no employees, we need a plan of what to do with the number one enemy of the corporate state, the human taker.

    Ultimately there are only three choices

    1) Keep spreading the limited resources thinner and thinner across a growing population,
    2) Limit population growth
    3) Increase productivity

    Humans have been mostly depending on #1 and 3 until the resources run out, at which point genocide, famine, and war drop them into #2.

    At some point a controlled application of #2 will be required, maybe better than China's attempt.

    If you raise a puppy as a public service you might get your neighbors to pay at least some of the costs.

    One could argue that developing something useful as open source is also a public service, although I don't think this bill is the answer.
