...(which corresponds to having about $800k well-invested in most of the USA), can you really do whatever the hell you are truly passionate about, with no compromises
According to my calculations you are off (low) by a factor of 2 - you need about $1.5 M. One of the reasons I say this is because we are about to enter a period of "stagflation". The Federal Government is spending like a drunken Sailor and we have no real growth in our industrial output and energy costs are skyrocketing. Poof - your money is gone. The upshot is that you need to plan on no net increase in the value of savings - at least after inflation.
Advice of "do whatever you're most interested in [regardless of pay]" sounds nice, and may be more fun in the short term, but it is much less likely to bring you true freedom than being a "money whore."
Except you are miserable for the 20 years it takes to earn that money. I am now at year 17 post PhD (my wife is 17 years post residency). We have figured that we will have enough money in about 5 years. (Mind you we have 4 kids so this slowed us down a bit.) This will put us in our early 50's. If we live the to the average age in the US - then we will have worked about 25 years and been retired about 25 years. (With the other 25 years learn-in reed-in, rite-in and rythmatic-in). How or why should I want to be miserable 1/3 of my life? (OK half if you include the k-12 grades - they were boring!)
RED dots? I understand the yellow ones - they are explained in the article - as are the pictures behind the yellow dots. The RED dot have no explaination. Anyone?
Wow - I see that the same moron modder is still at it. I doubt that you even read my whole post. Have another post to mod as flamebait. Use those mods up!
First - how the @#% is the parent post redundant??
The person (?) who modded this is a moron. [Yes, that is flamebait - so what.]
Now, I had not thought about craigslist. That is an intersting idea. The other place - perhaps is garage sales. We also have a place called Half-Priced Books. About 10% of their sales are through this. (They buy and resell used books.) I get old jazz and classical music from them. The record companies dump CDs that they can't sell there.
Personally I cannot stand what they currently call music. The stuff that I grew up with is SO old it is pathetic. I think that this is the real reason that record sales are down so much. It has nothing to do with illegal downloads.
Did you try upgrading the graphics card, the DVD drive or the processor yet? That's what the parent post was getting act.
No but why would you need to do that? (I am using an old 400 MHz G4 TiBook. I need to replace the HD but there seems to be no reason to replace anything else - oh wait I need to replace the battery inside the thing as well.) If I want a new processor - the cost for the processor is a big part of the whole hardware cost - so why not replace the whole thing? Also, replacing the processor without replacing the motherboard is a waste of $
I have had students tell me that they suspect someone.... I have then gone and looked for evidence. I have caught students sometimes and sometimes I don't. I do however ask students to let me know - in class. Pointing out that it is in the student's best interest to get rid of cheaters. Cheaters only hurt a school's reputation which in turn hurts a student's BS. Go figure. (I also have a board with 'kills' on it - not unlike a pilot in the air force. The students know what it represents. It does work.)
I read this and all I could think of was the saying about Wyoming. Wyoming - where the men are men and the sheep are scared. I guess the sheep in Wyoming are MORE then 15% human in that case. (Yeah Wyoming IS a nice place - I did not makeup the saying so chill.)
You are correct that there maybe earlier occurrences of the joke but AP played it to the hilt. BTW the US does have a culture - just like all of the countries in Europe, Asia, S.A. and Africa...
Wow I thought everyone would get the joke but looking at the replies. It is a reference to Austin Powers - which is of course a spoof of the James Bond movies.
Highly-educated women are substantially more likely to drink excessively in their 20s than those without qualifications, according to a study to be published today...
Ok I need to move to the UK. Smart young women who drink heavily. However, knowing my luck I'd only find the ones that don't brush their teeth. (It IS the UK!)
Gee two different braches of my university have been hit in the last three months. All of it on Windows machines. My department had over 70 machines taken over. Sounds like monoculture is the way to go.

Thanks for the laugh!

From what an old friend tells me - (OK he was my roommate in college - not really a friend) - you could not have been from the FAA either.
nah - you can't be from NSA. You have to be a geek to surf here.
I seem to remember something about this - it had a catchy name "Iran-Contra" or some such.
While this is not a gaming machine - and it never was. It still has better resolution then the better projectors. Again - why upgrade?
ummm looking at new and old versions on wiki,

I would say that they have already folded.
So Diamond is a metal? I guess it is a chain in some cases. Then in answer to your comment, it depends - is it in or out of a marriage?

Oh I guess that it is. What of it? Tomorrow is April 2nd - just in case you did not know.

More importantly - and much to my surprise - Now I find out that all you slashdotters HAVE BEEN with a woman...
(Yes I know some Slashdotters ARE women.)
Wow - Dude get a clue

It is monoculture... Only PCs got hit in each case.

and I think that one more campus just got hit. Not sure which one.

Yes but this is ann article about string theory - wait I get it - never mind
Not that I disagree with the mod here but why is this modded funny and the first post modded off topic - when they make the SAME JOKE!
