Never mind, I've just performed the firmware update myself. Worked a treat. Not as many software fixes as I was hoping for, but still good to see the updates are coming.
This is a great alternative e-Ink reader to the Kindle and Sony Reader. It supports open formats as well as DRM'ed mobipocket, runs linux and comes with the promise of firmware updates to add future format support and bug fixes.
yeah yeah, i know, and i'm not American incidentally.. but there was still no reason for the original comment to be ambiguous - there could still be lots of cows around and lots of cowshit, but no bullshit.
aaaanyway.. i suppose if i'm going to be a pedant i have to expect it to be thrown back at me.
Yes, there is a difference between SCIENCE FICTION that is fiction with a scientific basis, and SCIENCE FICTION where all of the science itself is the fictitious part.
it's not hiding anything, and it's certainly not reprehensible.
linux doesn't need to be marketed to experts who know what they're doing -- because they'll choose linux anyway.
getting n00bs to start with baby steps is not a bad thing at all, and getting people who don't need or intend to ever stray from the GUI at all onto a free, secure OS is to be commended.
OS X hides it's unix internals far more than any of these "easy" linux distros. is that reprehensible too?
to install any OS from the CD you'll need to setup the BIOS to boot from it. if the distribution is any good, then magazines will start to include it on their CD/DVDs and then downloading/burning the image won't be needed either.
Try looking at the above if you need a web-app where you can use AJAX as required, but also require full JEE integration including OR mapping with EJB3/Hibernate and a strong GUI component/event model. It makes the disjoint between the various JEE tiers SEAM-less.
They may be apples and oranges, but they are still both fruit.
The discussion above is valid because some technologies use threads where others use processes- eg: a java web server generally uses threads to handle requests, whereas a ruby web app results in a seperate ruby process for each request.
I'm saying that you can't take MS-SQL on to other platforms, I thought that was pretty obvious.
If you design your app in a DB-independant way then fine, you can port to another DB, but that's alot more overhead than sticking with a DB that runs on multiple OS'es.
You are mostly right - but it's just getting them to decide on Windows as the OS, it is NOT lock-in in this case. If they chose MSSQL they would be locked in.. but with the wise choice of Postgres they can change OS later on.

woohoo want to try it out and be my guinea pig? ;)

umm.. did u mean cowshit? or that there isn't a bull around for miles?
That's a very big IF you are using there, buddy, to skirt around the actual point.
Why don't they? Because they're too stupid to know any better, let alone blame Redmond for it.
1) It's Aussie
2) Last I knew of it, the Register was British (weird little island)
3) Australia is a weird HUGE island
I would imagine it's because they cannot generate constant power - you are at the mercy of the sun and the wind.

They might be flagged as const, but a bit of stray radiation could corrupt them...
I agree with you that it's unlikely to be built for trucks and cars. But ~102kms (64 miles) isn't really such a long way between rest stops.
However if you use the BigDecimal class, scale and precision are very important and do determine equality (unless you use the compareTo()) method.
Good question, I haven't really looked in awhile. Have they *all* disappeared??

and what do you propose?

of course, you could always..do...this

errr the DVD sales more likely had the effect...
do u mean "like it less", ie: dislike it more?
meanwhile, i'm modded flamebait up there, but at least it was first post
the article should say Vista DOWNgrades?
a Nobel? you, kind sir, are a waste of space.
i believe it autodects your OS based on your user agent, you insensitive anonymous coward. why are you in windows??
