In Soviet Russia the fucking idiots are you. Now I don't know if you were raised in Soviet Russia, wartime Germany, cartel ridden Colombia, or some other hostile regime where a man getting yanked (or in a later example: a child) for what is obviously harmless chat is the norm. One thing to look at is the fact that everyone knows it is against the law to even mention that the president might get a particularly nasty cold, we all know you can't threaten the president. Duh. What I didn't know is that our basic rights are being thrown out the window. If secret service agents watching a chat room (and at the same time the library) couldnt figure out right off the bat they were dealing with a non-threat then we are all in trouble, even all you AC's out there. You know I don't agree with you, that's why I am replying, but does my arguing the position of this "domestic terrorist" (who actually was just some Joe American) then label me as the same? If your not scared for your freedom of speech then your using the old false argument of "Well who cares if they enact law_X, it only applies to criminals." A regime like Dubya's is very paranoid about staying in power and threats from a variety of internal and external sources... Why? I thought he was making everyone happy and the world a better place. At least that's what he said in the state of the union and on the campaign trail....... When its wrong to exercise your constitutional rights I dont want to be right (but if they keep me scared enough I wont say a thing).
From the American Library Associations website: http://www.ala.org/alonline/news/2003/030224.html# santafe I was horrified to read that a man was hamdcuffed and brought in for perfectly harmless (but anti-Bush) chat in a library. Read the article and shiver. This story along with the Patriot Act II http://www.onlinejournal.com/Special_Reports/02200 3Winslow/022003winslow.html has me very scared for my basic rights. These scenarios are coming home fast, it's good to watch Australia and Britan to see what's in store.
This is what I have always believed. Aside from Pokemon and other long RPG type games that dont 'fit' arcade quarter minchers, console gaming has always been trying to recreate the arcade experience (see online gaming and xbox live). Nintendo has also seen this and is re-entering the arcade scene with the new F-Zero...The only thing that makes me wonder about the viability for both consoles trying to enter the market is the fact that Capcom is leaving it. What does Capcom know, and what are MS and Nintendo going to find out. Xbox may have a chance in american arcades, but only if they have a few million lying around to lose (oh wait).
Whatever happened to iCab? I thought they would really do something by being one of the first browsers to work on X (I think they had it running at the Public Beta). It was hella clean, a totally mac native app, and runs from old school Moto 68000s to brand new dual g4's - Sooooo many features and so small. The only things that stick out to me are that 1. it is put out by some small german company that couldnt market themselves into getting arrested and/or 2. that the rendering looks (or at least did look) like shit on a system like OSX... Omniweb too........ Now all i hear about is this newfangled SurfSafari thing, and the tabs, and the tabs, and the tabs.......
Opera on mac is shitty (and yes, it is) becasue its an obvious port. Among other things but the number one complaint: it just doesnt feel like a mac program (this is the Apple board, I dont have to explain what I mean by that). I also like it on Windows (I was an early Opera convert) and my sister jumped for joy when she found out is was coming to OSX but when we actually used it, bleh. A day later and she was done with it. It took me a week at most. At the time we went back to Omniweb and now are both content with Safari. Sorry Opera team, best of luck on that other platform.
Something about the task that guy has set himself was keeping me up last night. "OK first I have to turn my system into a clusterfuck of extensions by installing damn near every program that comes out...Daily. Then for the real pieces of crap I'll explore all of their non-existant and frustrating features. And only after this is all done I will then somehow put on my happy face and write a blisteringly funny review." I just couldnt do it......
Fourth quarter sales were down for: puppies, toy trucks, jacks, and bikes. Meanwhile oddly enough sales for duct tape and plastic sheeting continue to rise based on a scared populace that thinks "There are madmen running loose int he streets!"
This is so much better than any Ellen Feiss 'switch' ad, and Yao Ming, and certainly and Jeff Goldblum voice-over. I know that TechTV may be already preaching to the choir (i.e. nerds) but 95% of nerds still dont use Apple computers. Personally I don't have a TV but as my neighborhood "mac guy" my friends are laways mentioning 'that new cool apple thing' that they saw on TechTV and specifically Screen Savers.
I'd be very interested in seeing a survey along the lines of "Your a PC user, do you even consider the apple platform to be a real alternative?" My guess would be a very low % of people honestly consider the platform. But with the 50/50 split of airtime and having a host 'switch' - Apple just cannot buy better advertising.
I think that show needs to do a one-handed back spin-off the damn TV. A vampire show that has really lousy vampires and a teeny bopper star? Its not what your going to spin-off its how your going to 'spin' it. Step 1: Buffy Step 2: Bad spin-off Step 3: ????? Step 4: Profit!
If in fact a team has deciphered the codes (I can't read the article PPV) does this break actually break any laws and/or license agreements or is it one of those rights we long ago clicked away upon installation? We all feared the worst, well now it has been confirmed - but what are they doing-going to do with all this data? Legal action should be taken if at all possible to answer these questions.
Actually I think Darwin's Hexley [http://www.hexley.com/] might give your damned penguin a run for his money. I mean we dont have "Platypus Racer" running on embedded ATM displays yet but there is definately potential.

The only thing linux has going for it IS miscrosoft. without the upgrade tax, proprietary everything, kludgeware and the ususal but pervasive anti-MS sentiments I honestly don't see linux making any buzz outside of the geek community. Now that you have achieved admirable underdog status is it only a matter of time before the mainstream press picks up on the infighting and anti-red hat and general holier than thou sentiments. Keep this in mind, circle the wagons, and make corporate inroads while you can. (Oh and you had better thank god for Apple's proprietary hardware or Linux wouldnt even get the occasional thought.)
Oh wait, they just mean untill next week. Then that $459 will look hella well spent.::In the not so distant future:: Why the hell did I buy that video card? I couldve : gone on a trip, bought 100 hits of acid and gone on a hundred trips, taken my girlfriend out, went out and bought a girlfriend...... Thanks but no thanks, Ill stick to my VooDoo3....
But I know that my next TV will be HDTV compatible. Sports alone are enough to do it for me, plus while i am waiting for all the stations to catch up and support it I still have use of the wide aspect for DVD's and progressive scan hook-ups for my Gamecube. I saw a commercial today (at work) saying ESPN was moving to support it. Well for me that is about all I need. The ability to see "Friends" in 16:9 just doesnt do it for me. Now watching my bruins with clarity and a wide screen shot of the ice? What body part do I have to sell?
try MOA Tunes http://beam.to/woodenbrain - It does not work all that well when you try to sick it on say 3000 files at once, but one artist at a time it works wonders. It has time to go through and weed them out plus "tUrn_THIS" "Into This." With all the hours this little fucker has saved me I had to write them up a little ad here.
I realized a while ago that i need to keep this computer tucked away somewhere pending the outcome of the corporates vs the consumers. With my installation (OSX 10.2.4) and hardware now (DVD-R) I can rip-mix-burn 99.5% of CD's that have ever been made, and either by turning on apache/FTP access for my friends or burning them DVD's full of 256k encoded Mp3's I have a machine with which I can do anything I please with an exhaustive collection. When it comes to movies FFMPEG and Mencoder make it a one click operation to backup any DVD's I have (to any format I like) and share them as described above. With what I hear coming from the linked articles and other sources not upgrading and keeping legacy hardware may be coming into reality as the only way to protect our rights. Is there any restrictive DRM on OSX right now? Yes, I hate to say it but yes (see iPod, un-saveable QT movies). And yes, it is only going to get worse. I believe Apple will use the lack of hard Palladium style DRM as a selling point for a while, but at some point that selling point _will_ vanish unless serious changes are made to the DMCA. That said im hoping to buy a dual Power970 later this year....that would be a machine I could comfortably tuck away and use for the next decade.
um can i send you some blank DVD's? howabout this, ill send you 2 blank DVD's and a case of Yuengling [ http://www.yuengling.com/ ]! Honestly - they can shut down Scour.net/Napster/Morpheus/Kazaa all they want. When I can fit 9GB of data/music on one 2 sided DVD and just walk across town - what are they going to do to stop me?
