Seriously for anyone who hasn't lived in PA this should be marked +5 Informative. Pennsylvania is a shithole. More people are moving out than in and last I heard it's overall population was decreasing. There is Philly and there is Pittsburgh and the rest we affectionately call "Pennsyltucky."
I lived in the "capitol" Harrisburgh (near scenic Mechanicsville) for some time...If that is your state capitol, sheesh...
Ok, ill bite, so what did you do with it? I mean you didnt just magically upgrade to a new one. Do you have some fucking demon sitting in your desk drawer somewhere?
In case you do I know someone (actually a few majik - pagan - idiots) who would love to buy it.
Latest Wired has a bit about the new Oakley goggles for US terrorists that protect the eyes from laser guidance systems on jets. Since the Iraqi people don't have Oakleys (or water for that matter) I guess there might be some negative effects that we will never read about in our papers. And of course the 'liberated' Iraqis will never read about it either since by then they will be blind!
We could care less about the Geneva Convention unless we are using it to spin against whomever we are against at the moment. In 1988 did we care about Saddam gassing his own people? No we sold him the stuff to do it. In 2003 he is yet again breaking the Geneva Convention and its an issue. Funny but I don't think a "preventative war" fits anywhere in the "Rules' of War" (though strangely enough it does come up repeatedly under 'Imperialism").
That line has been blurring steadily since I have been alive. I think Jello Biafra said it best:
"We are living in New Corporate Feudalism."
(And just in case you have never heard of him, Jello Biafra was/is: the lead singer of The Dead kennedy's, San Francisco mayorial candidate, spoken word performer, World Trade activist and owner of Alternative Tentacles Records - the home of Noam Chomsky's recording archive)
This sounds like Apple back in the day... "Well were bleeding money as it is, why not start another service." But at least Apple had the sense to try and create new markets (ie. the first PDA and one of the first Digicams) AOL/TW coming out with a PVR box? God there are so many holes in that idea that I don't know where to start. In any case (heh 'Case' get it?) this is not the Holy Grail that will get AOL/TW out of the red, in fact this is more likely to put them in ReplayTV land (read: bankrupcy court).
-"I am sure that they'll be at my door in minutes and tomorrow my face will be on the news as "suspected of a plot of terrorism."-
Actually this is part of the problem. With Patriot Act and Patriot Act II:the feds dont have to charge you, they dont have to reveal if and where they are holding you, and can cut off your citizenship and ship you off to Guantanamo Bay where you will never be heard from again..... Now yes, I realize this is unlikely and/or paranoid but - although this used to happen in the shadows on occasion -now this is perfectly legal! PsyOps (whoops I mean propaganda) would convince you that you have nothing to fear as long as your not a terrorist. Well I hope we can all see that the aforementioned argument is not reason enough to take away my rights.
With so many powers to (now legally) intercept and monitor all forms of communication, not to mention the Gov's "rights" to infiltrate and monitor and destroy _any_ group that may be considered against the government, well its no suprise to me that people are waking up to the fact that our gov does _not_ have our best interests at heart. The bill of rights was thrown out the window a long time ago, it seems only recently people are beginning to wake up to these ugly, terrifying facts.
I mean hell, when I first told people about Echelon no one believed me. Then when it actually made its way into th paper (along with Carnivore) they believed me but didnt care. Democracy is the ultimate weapon of control: keep most of the people stupid using TV and textbooks, then convince the majority of morons that their only choice is to 'elect' someone who has been bought and paid for by the aerospace industries and other corporate whores. The thing that really bothers me though is that so many/. readers (who on a whole I consider quite intelligent and well read) buy into the same CNN propaganda as these semi-literate, inbred, patriotism freaks.
Im glad to see a linux distributor hyping the zeroconf protocol. It has always seemed to be a perfect match for me. here is an underlying protocol that when coupled with a _good_ gui install makes a very compelling product from an ease of use standpoint (let alone cost). Having Apple as a cheerleader will help as well, and already compaines like HP and TIVO are including zeroconf support. Imagine it, TIVO could work easier on a linux box than a comprable PC....Just a possibility. Another possibility that I hardly dare mention was a rumor that people (Apple) were working on local ZeroConf networks that offloaded intensive tasks to idle processors - Rendezvous/ZeroConf may a long (paradigm breaking) life ahead of it, its up to the imagination of the developers.
-consider hacking into CNN's network and releasing what they are NOT showing on TV-

It's easier than breaking the law..
Organized crime must be chomping at the bit for this to happen. Hackers are employed and are a hot commodity on both sides of the law (see: Las Vegas' recent trouble with Mob 0wn3d phone lines). Expect this to create a number of "Security Professional" openings, some on monster.com, some on IRC.....
Holy Shit! Before I even read the rest of this comment (or the article, or other comments or really any facts whatsoever) Im going to run out and write this up on my blog and then see if Slashdot will take it for a story. Thanks for the scoop!
If Dvorak actually posted this crap to/. his act would be see through: just another troll. But for some odd reason slashdot goes out of their way to post a story that can do nothing but inflame the readers.
Reminds me of a comment I read here sometime: Rob: I'm bored I think ill start a flame war. Users: We will take that flame war!
Just an observation. The person writing the article is the real story. Apple switching to Itanium has less credibility than Apple going back to Moto 68000's and doesn't really even warrant a response.
After alldas.org and attrition.org took down their active defacement pages where are some current lists? I would like to see more of these for myself, I remember reading those daily long ago and saw many people use others pages for political speech.
But really, I just miss the script kiddie banter, im sorry I cant help it, it has always been my vice.
Its about fucking time! Being as youve sold about 600,000 of those little bastards (including mine) you now have 600,000 people with no reason to tell people _not_ to get one.
If Wall Street really had it's finger on the pulse of the tech sector Apple's stock would've gone up today.
yeah I used to have a Scirocco, water cooled and everything. A great Volkswagen but damn what a parts hog. 2.8 Liter engine and a 5 speed manual it was a blast to drive.
Oh Cirocco? Not Scirocco? Whoops, but why on earth would anyone would dig up that dead convoluted name is beyond me. A few VW enthusiasts might always remember you but I think your just alienating your audience, all naming your company after trade winds.... Maybe iCirocco? Nah.
The PsyOps have been in effect for some time now. Impressive gains are being reported from their lead operatives in the field (CNN, FoxNN, The Big 3). To believe that the military does not affect your daily news feed is akin to believing that Abraham Lincoln never told a lie.
When I first saw this story come up I was wondering what you would have to say about it.... How can SQL's finest hour be your darkest? Keep your chin up, troll on,
I couldnt agree more. Services are very immature on OSX but will surely evolve into one of those things we just take for granted. The ability to have a nifty little "Applescript convert PDF to text and email that file to _X_" systemwide script always waiting for your command (in a clean GUI manner) is to me amazing . As the Finder and other key apps move to the cocoa enviroment (where services are much more intergrated and shared with negligable extra work on the programmers side) this technology will really take off.
But excuses aside, carbon based programs can now access the Services menu its just a matter of getting developers interested. This is one of the NeXT features that always intruiged me, im glad to see it gaining a little momentum.
1997, I was a die hard PC user just begging for a reason to 'switch' (back then you called it getting rid of Win95). On the software side the Mac OS was already showing its age badly and Rhapsody was a pariah. Enter the iMac. When it was going to be a time consuming clusterfuck to finally get everyone onto the OSX-UNIX-NeXT-Carbon-Blue Box(anyone remember that?)-Cocoa new Mac OS they innovated int he only space left..Well enter 2003 and OSX is just growing up and users are still clinging to classic boxes. But the imac - a hardware revolution that brought Apple just enough limelight and revenue to keep it afloat- 5 years later and a recent slashdot poll pegged apple as going out of business: Never... It was an eye opening computer to own and i love my daily use of its decendent, the flat panel.
At the least they will live on for YEARS as macquariums.
I totally agree. Nintendo has such a quality product in the Gamecube, and this news [read EA] could _easily_ give Nintendo second place in the home console market. Online gaming is getting down to nuts and bolts when these big publishers are finally committing, and Microsoft's 'philosohpy' will probably cost them marketshare - EA is going to make a fucking heap of money in online NBA Street - Madden - NHL, not to mention all of their other non-sport franchises (Super Ghouls & Ghosts Online). In the long run this would put Nintendo in a very good position, a strong #2 in both Japan and America to the PS2, all the while selling more Gameboy's than you can shake a stick at. And yes, Metroid is just a genre braking piece of electrical art that shouldnt be missed.
I mean c'mon Neo!!! uses them in The Matrix to give away (well actually sell) all his super 1337 hax0r shit! I know I ran out the next day and bought a drive just like he had.

Why? Won't we all be dead at that point?
But hell why not, let's try arming the post-nuclear apocolaypse cockroaches and see what happens.
