I think desktop users complaints about X are unjustified... A better solution perhaps, would be to turn off some of all that eye candy, not replacing X.
X needs to be able to handle eye candy as well as Windows does or else desktop users' complaints will be fully justified; that is, X is almost invariably ugly and slow. What you're suggesting is that instead of having complaints and working toward a solution, we should simply ignore the faults. Um, no. I really don't think Windows is anything great but on an x86 platform there is not a better-looking OS that runs at a reasonable speed. X needs to change that or else X will always be playing second fiddle...from very far away. If X cannot handle what have become expectations of a GUI then there needs to be a replacement or rewrite. Maybe Y will be that.
Okay, your parent is flamebait. Nobody in the WTC ever did anything to personally offend anyone in al-Qaeda. But....
"Even if you disagree with Israel, at least they don't kill innocent civilians."
That's very untrue. Very VERY untrue. Three times as many Palestinians have died in this intifada. It's hard to say that Israel is on the defensive. Both sides are just plain wrong, but if we judge morality based on quantity, I'd say Israel has a lot of explaining to do.
Yes, guys, it's an advertisement for Microsoft. I know that.
But this is a good thing. Inner city high schools rarely have enough textbooks for everyone. A $46 million tech budget (and I'm assuming all of the other necessities of a high school) is a good thing, and the fact that it's coming from people we don't particularly like doesn't matter. It's not like the students have to sign a contract disavowing OSS. Yes, the computers inside will be running Microsoft. That's probably a good thing since that's what high school students will encounter in the workplace, especially in the near future.
It must not have been that big of a loss/eyeopener for you if you're wishing death upon a complete stranger.
He IS saying that the 9-11 attacks WERE a big deal to the general community and that to the geek community, the SCO bullshit is a big deal as well.
The part that seems to anger you is that after the initial attack, the media wouldn't shut up about terrorists. Just like we won't shut up about SCO.
The thing is...terrorists aren't as big of a deal as some people like to make it seem. Terrorism will happen no matter what and there's nothing you can really do to prevent it.
If someone steals a jetliner and crashes it into a nuclear plant twenty minutes away, that's what happens. It would take much longer than twenty minutes for the Air Force to assemble a tactical strike.
There are no metal detectors on the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) train system and there's very rarely security on the trains. If one terrorist started with an assault rifle in the front car and another started in the back car of each train and met in the middle car, then that's what would happen - and it would take ten minutes.
There isn't much to report about terrorism. It sucks but that's that - and people wanna hear about it, so it gets reported. That's what he was saying.
As a user of dial-up, I should let everyone know that a service pack is probably worth it. I have two hours to kill when it comes to security. Anyone who thinks that patches are a waste of time probably deserve to have their computer knocked out of service.
Jesus Christ. "two". I should have hit that preview button. And also "in practice", not "in principle". Hopefully between these two posts, one coherent idea will present itself.
That isn't fascism. Disgusting, sure, and as bad (or worse) than fascism, but they're too different things. Fascist states use hypercapitalism, racism, sexism, a strictly segregated class system, etc.
Left-wing dictators usually try to get rid of ethnic distinctions and sexism and, in theory, there are no classes. Even in Iraq, women were equal under the law and in principle more so than other Middle Eastern states. (Yes, I know about the attacks against Kurds.)
*gasp* But that gives the government too much POWER! Don't private corporations have the God-given right to artificially create a monopoly price market?! COMMIE!
Hint to fellow Americans: Maybe sometimes the government isn't evil.
What happens when I only get 2 parties to choose from, and both of those are determined to expand the scope of government, when I am strongly opposed to just about any possible expansion of government? If I don't choose between apples and apples, in effect ENDORSING the 2-party system, then I have no right to speak my opinion? Get real.
I think the point is that if you force the 50% of Americans that never vote, the Greens and Libertarians will start getting a decent amount of votes and probably win a few elections. People will notice that these people are making decisions based on ideology more than on cash, and in ten or fifteen years, we may have an actual left and/or right wing presence in Congress rather than two centrist parties.
Note: This is why this won't be happening any time soon.
That's all true, and I've run into that problem before. I've known what the exact problem was and what would solve the problem...but with no (known) way to do it. This is where open source/total access comes in.
There seems to be no reason why Windows can't make itself more configurable...although perhaps outsiders would be able to figure out how Windows really works. It seems to me we're in agreement but talking about two different things.
I don't like to be holier-than-thou with respect to computers, especially here because I know that I know less about computers than 95% of the people on Slashdot.
However, how many crashes on Windows-based machines can be blamed on poorly configured systems? I know that most people I know have about fifteen programs load in their system tray when they boot into Windows. When I ask (and I always do, because it amazes me) what the programs are, they say "I dunno".
People downloading a hundred screen savers and countless font packs can't help. Sure, Microsoft definitely has a responsibility to make a stable OS. I know I'm gonna get punched for saying this, but NT 5.0 (aka 2k/XP) is pretty stable. It's not Linux or BSD but it's fine. My computer hasn't has a crash that wasn't completely my fault in probably three months. My secret is knowing what every file on my computer is (except for dlls and such). I keep my computer pretty clean. Windows, Word, AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, Soulseek, mp3s, porn. That's my C: right there. That's all you need. My cursor doesn't turn into a spider but that's fine.
It seems to me that individual programs crash WAY more than Windows. I dunno how much of this, if any, is Microsoft's fault.
Really. What are you doing on an airplane that demands secrecy? And if you're doing something that demands secrecy, should you be on an airplane for it? If the privacy encroachment comes through not being an anonymous traveler, airlines probably aren't for you.
I appreciate privacy, believe me, and I'm very much against TIA, the Patriot Act, and all that other 1984 bullshit, but an airplane is very much a public place, about as public as you can get. I don't get the "private" part.
Their business model has failed, quite simply, because their system sucks. I don't know any people that favor the Xbox over PS2 (and I don't hang out with anti-MS geeks). The only decent game put out for Xbox exclusively was Halo. I don't play many video games myself, but it seems to me that every decent game for the Xbox is licensed for other systems. Yes, this is all subjective, but I know most gamers share my opinions.
And am I wrong in saying that you must pay for internet gameplay, while PS2 or Gamecube allows it for free?
You can't make money back on games when you don't have any games.
"The most these two you named can be called is forgettable losers. They hate the country and its people, and Americans in return think little of them. Kucinich is even endorsed by Noam Chomsky, a noted Stalinist pseudo-intellectual and anti-semite of the lunatic fringe."
Anti-Israel != Anti-semite.
I have Jewish friends but I think Israel should become Palestine. I've read most of Chomsky's stuff and I don't see anything hateful about his writings except for hate of illocial foreign policy. Maybe in his earlier writings there was something, but I've never seen any evidence that he's anti-semitic.
By the way, we meet on one point - Kucinich would be a bad president. He's not a good leader.
And to back up - stalinist? Lunatic? He is on the fringe, to be sure, and he's certainly a socialist. However, speaking as a socialist, I'm here to tell you that we HATE Stalin. He ruined his nation and the entire leftist movement (although the Soviets never had anything resembling socialism). I'm sure if Chomsky read that he was stalinist, he'd piss himself laughing. And if you want proof that he's not a lunatic, just hear him state facts. No opinions, just facts. You'll then see where he's coming from.
Well...when the post is intentionally incorrect, then that's a form of trolling, yeah. Of course, an honest mistake isn't a troll, and there are tons of trolls that aren't factually wrong.
"Here's how the test works: You take a strong statement made by a previous poster that compares the relative value of Linux and Windows and swap the words "Linux" and "Windows" and post it. This should flip the "Troll" bit."
Of course, the reason this gets labelled a troll is that Windows and Linux are not the same thing, so if you interchange the words, you often come up with something that's factually incorrect. Hence the troll mod.
But honestly. How long do you think it will be until someone makes an RFID detector and neutralizer? We will win this battle.
Yes.
X needs to be able to handle eye candy as well as Windows does or else desktop users' complaints will be fully justified; that is, X is almost invariably ugly and slow. Okay, man, you really overdid it.
And I hate it when people fight :(

Is that a Demolition Man reference? I thought I was the only one that remembered that horror.

Have you thought about entering the competition to find the sexiest geek alive?
Have you ever seen/heard anything funnier than this on the BBC news?

No, seriously, I'm a college student and I've learned how wonderful the stuff is. I've never learned WHAT it is, but that's alright.
Duh! Think about it. Isn't that the point? To kill P2P networks?"
He did think about it. That's what he was saying. That's their strategy. You two agree.
Shame on you.
