Why would french ISPs see increased subscriber rates? Laws apply to the country you're in when the act was committed. It doesn't matter that your internet access is provided by a French company, if you're downloading copyrighted works while in the US or other countries with copyright laws, it's still illegal.
This doesn't apply here. The company has to pay Tivo for a balloon on top of THEIR OWN ad. For example, GMC pays Tivo to pop up a balloon as the user is skipping over the GMC ad. They aren't intentionally placing ads over anybody else's advertisement (barring technical bugs of course).
It's not "giving away" music when you share files on P2P because you retain a copy of the song as well, you didn't give it to someone else and relinquish your copy. Same for "lending", it just isn't applicable to digital music files, DRM'd or otherwise.
I go to a high school in the Cobb County School System (I'm a senior now), and I'm embarassed that we're even having this discussion. It's especially frustrating for me as my college applications are being reviewed and my school system is in the headlines for making everyone here like a bunch of crazy religious idiots.
Not everybody here feels the way these "parents" do about evolution; most of the reaction I see at my school about this issue is disgust and frustration over the stupidity of the whole thing. I hope that this won't negatively impact my future, maybe I'll get lucky and the admissions officers at the schools I'm applying to won't read the news today.
Actually, Hotmail allows you to fill about 110% of your capacity before it actually starts to bounce messages. Right now it's a measly 2 MB, but it should be increased to 250 MB in the next few weeks.
It is because now it can never be removed as long as Slashdot is still up. Also gives time, date, just not identity. An anonymous letter from the civil war area is still a record, is it not?
Really? So all disclaimers saying "Corporate entity is not responsible for injury caused by... blah blah" are invalid? I'd like to see proof of this in law.
Here's a rather bad (and slightly humorous) babelfish translation of the site, but you can kind of get the gist... sort of...
A number of Dutch providers has at present tested wormblokker on the basis of a vast database with contaminated pc.s this file for two weeks has been kept up BIT, provider business. In this database is see among others as from which ip-adres which virus is spread.
Other providers can use this database to inform that their own customers their computer are contaminated and nuisance ensures, thus explains Alex chip of BIT . Themselves spreading viruses (maggots) appear ensure more and more nuisance, both at individuals and at providers.
BIT itself has had to the automatic blacklist system since last week in use its protect customers against the always larger becoming flow to virus mails. Also a number of other Dutch providers, among which XS4ALL, Zonnet ARE and Interned services, have meanwhile the arrangement concerning the data.
Port 25
BIT keeps up in its database as from which ip-adressen are virusmailtjes sent. This sends frequently directly place finds by means of poort 25 as from contaminated computers. As soon as there within 24 hours more than two contaminated mailtjes at BIT, ip-adres in the blacklist come in are put for 24 hours. Ip-adressen of the mail servers of well-known providers are not put moreover in the database.
This system, baptised by the bed cherry VIRBL, after setting-up direct result has had, thus puts chip. The mail servers of BIT have been considerably relieved meanwhile already. Also Internet services IS is enthusiastically and calls the result ' staggeringly '. The provider use the list of BIT to relieve its mail server. Moreover customers are informed if she contaminates prove be.
Chello to top
From the list becomes clear that providers also other can from the blacklist. At the diffusers (more than thousand virusmailtjes) customers of the providers Chello, Tiscali and @Home dominate. By is ip-adres at Tiscali, waarvandaan no less than wide twaalfduizend sober G-mailtjes has been sent.
In sum the crown (with wide 27,000 sent virusmailtjes at the 25 largest diffusers) stretches Chello, followed by Tiscali (almost 23.000), @Home (almost 20.000), Wanadoo (more than 14.000), HCCnet (almost 13.000) and Planet (almost 12.000).
I've had a checking account with Bank of America since I was 16, and was issued a Visa debit card when I opened the account. I'm 17 now and if I wanted to, I could go to iTMS right now and purchase music with said debit card.
And here I thought NASA didn't get enough funding... I really hope the manned mission to Mars never becomes a reality or it will gobble up all the money for projects like this.
In a computer media player, it would be all about the first ad because if the viewer isn't interested by the first one, they're going to drag he slider 2-3 minutes into the future until the show is back. Commercials in the middle would be skipped over the vast majority of the time.
Nope, they sure won't if you don't buy blank cd's marked as "audio". The only difference between these and normal data cd's is that they include the royalty to the RIAA in their price.
We should support a bill giving the ESRB's ratings the weight of law, the same way that the MPAA's ratings hold true in the movie realm.
I'm not sure if this is what you're trying to say, but the MPAA ratings have no force of law behind them. The industry is self-regulated and enforced. It's not "illegal" in the sense of federal law to sneak into an R-rated movie when you're under 17.
Not with my Bank of America Debit Card, 100% Fraud Protection, same as on their credit cards. As long as you report it stolen within a reasonable amount of time, you aren't liable for a penny.
But what about HomestarRunner!! I think that's one good thing that's come out of flash...

My favorite cable company? Hell, I've only got one choice and it's a bit of a stretch to call it my favorite...
Just make sure they weren't labeled as "audio" or "music" CD-R's, otherwise the RIAA actually did take a cut of those sales in royalties.

My point: they aren't selling. The ones being bid on (aside from the 40GB) are under $100 at this point.
Actually, no not quite unless you're talking about the 40 GB hard drive variety
I think it was more likely that you had a simple user name and an address generator happened to guess your user ID.

damn, by the time i've RTFA, this thread will be locked and not allowing for further discussion!

Along these lines, it also bothers me when news organizations say pirates used "p2p web sites" to obtain illegal movies.
IIRC, I think this was achieved with weights in the wheels.
It may be too late for anyone to care now, but I maxed out my DSL connection at 150 KB/s dl'ing the file from this torrent I found on suprnova.org.
