What would be nice is if they released a live or installable DVD image that supported all your common hardware and provided a stripped-down system designed purely to run Steam, games and maybe some chat software etc. so you'd have a nice solid system to play your games without any background tasks getting in your way. Would also make it really easy to turn PCs you have lying around into lan party machines:)
I find it amusing that the "coordination facility of the government of the United Kingdom [..] activated in cases of national or regional emergency or crisis" is called... COBRA.
I had forgotten all about the pull-down screen thing.
However it still strikes me as pretty handy if you could do it with multiple desktops (maybe at different resolutions), different OSes, remote desktop connections, or just games. Seems like a better solution than straight full-screening or windowing..
When I first moved into my house they also sent me a few letters - then they came round and had a look around - then they left me alone for 5 years.
Then they sent me some more letters - I rang them and told them I still don't have a TV - they've not been in touch again since.
So its perfectly possible not to have any trouble with them.
Three is indeed great for developing - I used to have a 17" and two 21"s. Text editor on middle screen (21); browser window open on right screen (21); logs, ftp, putty, irc etc open on the left screen (17). Worked great - miss it now that I've only got the two 21"s.
On the subject of multi-monitor niceties, if you use your PC as your entertainment centre as I do, its nice having the video/vis window fullscreen on one screen while having player controls, playlist, system volume controls etc open on the spare.
One of the things that happens in the book 'The First Immortal' is the development of a widespread 'backlinking' feature in a web browser, so every page you visit, you get a list of sites that link to that page, so you can instantly and easily check out everyone's side of the story, with the aim of forcing society to be completely honest about everything.
Google is obviously in a position to do this, be freaky but cool if they actually do.
It is an excellent book btw, well worth reading.

when the quake source was stolen from crack.com a few years ago i believe a group of coders got it to work on the Amiga - quite a feat really. they got it licensed and published in the end, so it could actually be quite possible!

i'm in the uk. stopped off to get some cash on the way to the cinema one time and there was a Windows dialog box saying that a DHCP server could not be found! any attempts to enter a pin code would fail straight away. i wish i'd taken a photo:(
i've actually just set up an a1200 in my front room for gaming on, its still just as fun as it always was - although using plain workbench really reminds you how far we've come!

This is very interesting stuff. I wonder if these will ever be produced for amateur use, or if they'll only ever find their way into DRAM and such..
I believe Red Bull has taurine in it for just this purpose..

Or at least, that's what they were when I grew up playing with them in the 80s!

I can't remember what it was called but there was another tune around the same time (98-99?) that sampled the 14.4k modem handshake.

One of the guys in Douglas Adams' book Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency is working on software that does this - life immitating art ;)
I think that's a bit harsh and, well, untrue :)
But huge mix CDs, live bootlegs etc, do take up a lot of space.
You also rapidly fill up a lot of disk space when you start ripping all of your old and new CDs to put them in one large collection. That's what I do.
