Symantec's v9 of their antivirus software does do this (at least the corporate edition), but they do a piss-poor job of it. Of course, this keeps in line with their antivirus efforts, which suck as well. While it's decent at removing files, spyware references in the registry are regularly missed.

A book like "Hacking the Xbox" could be handy as there's some potential for alteration. With an iPod though, what *real* modifications can be made? I mean, with a little work, sure - I could take the casing off and paint it, I guess. Still, there just doesn't seem to be enough there to warrant sitting down for several hours to figure out how to get to a menu quicker, etc.

The device is simple. If you still don't get it after turning it on, try RTFM? If you're still having trouble with it and need *another* book, perhaps the iPod (and likely anything else with electricity) isn't compatible with your synapses.

I'm not saying Scaled Composites specifically, but they're a good example of a company that achieved a goal that would have cost a lot more if it had been done through NASA.

Technology? No, they (being the contract-winner) probably wouldn't. But I'll bet Boeing, Lockheed or others would be happy to subcontract.

Skillset? Pay more than NASA. Noone gets hurt but the dead weight, and the intelligent engineers that get it done get rewarded much better than they would at NASA.

Yes, NASA would have a jump-start in terms of infrastructure. However, they still would have to start the project and make the product, just like a private company would. In terms of a 2007 deadline, I don't know how realistic that is timewise, even for NASA.

By encouraging competition, you get better design, better ideas and better execution. NASA hasn't seemed to have been incredibly enthused on this project to be begin with, so why not give it a try with a company that was?

Now, the music? No, there aren't commercials in it exactly - well, yes there are. It seems like every couple of songs there's a "Sirius" commercial on, reminding you that you're listening to Sirius radio, or piping in stuff like "Don't forget to check out channel 146!"
